Description
csv,conf,v4 is a community driven data conference. Its an event thats not literally about CSV file format, but rather about what CSV represents in regards to our wider community ideals (data interoperability, hackability, simplicity, etc.).
Keeping with previous csv conferences, we have put together a heavily curated program that maintains an unconference feel. This will include quick, rapid fire, 20-minute presentations hand selected by the program committee. Talks will be about a range of data-related topics from a diverse range of speakers. Our focus this year is connecting key areas of open science, data journalism, and open government with the wider data software/tools community.
Propose a Talk (due Feb 9, 2019)
Registration Fees. We are a non-profit, community-run conference. Ticket sales pay for catering/venue costs and travel support for speakers/attendees. While csv, conf prides itself on hosting all that are interested, we appreciate registrants choosing the highest teir you or your institution can afford. Honor system. Note: All fees are charged in US dollars.
csv,conf,v4 is about bringing a diverse group together to discuss data topics. There are a limited number of travel awards and comp registrations available for those unable to pay. Please contact an organizer for more information.

Quantum Learning from Symmetric Oracles
Roll back
| description |

→ |
The study of quantum computation has been motivated, in part, by the possibility that quantum computers can perform certain tasks dramatically faster than classical computers. Many of the known quantum-over-classical speedups, such as Shor’s algorithm for factoring integers and Grover’s search algorithm, can be framed as oracle problems or concept learning problems. In one model of concept learning, a student wishes to learn a concept from a teacher by making queries of the teacher. In the interest of efficiency, the student wishes to learn the concept by making as few queries as possible. For any such concept learning problem, there is a corresponding quantum concept learning problem. In the quantum version, the student is allowed to ask a superposition of queries – mathematically, a linear combination of queries – and the teacher answers with the corresponding superposition of the responses. After making this idea precise, we will examine several concept learning problems and their quantum analogues. We will discuss recent joint work with Daniel Copeland (UCSD), in which we show how tools from representation theory can be used to precisely analyze any quantum learning problem with sufficient symmetry.
Will also be streamed live on the Galois YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1TJ20iM_dCa0pq6h0tA79w |

Portland Linux/Unix Group General Meeting
Who: Heather Wilcox<br>
What: Software Quality Engineering<br>
Where: PSU, 1930 SW 4th Ave. Room FAB 86-01 (Lower Level)<br>
When: Thursday, April 4th, 2019 at 7pm<br>
Why: The pursuit of technology freedom<br>
Stream: http://pdxlinux.org/live
There is no magic bullet for quality. Nor is there a right tool, script, or any amount of automation that can replace actual thought and effort. Building quality in requires that you first understand what it is. This talk will focus first on defining quality, then we will move to strategies for building the goodness in, and finally ways to test to ensure that both you and your "customers" are getting what they want.
About Heather
Heather Wilcox has spent 24 years working and learning in the software industry, choosing to focus primarily on start-up and small companies. As a result, she has had a broad range of job descriptions which include, but are not limited to: Tech Support Engineer, IS Manager, Technical Writer, QA Engineer, QA Manager, and Configuration Management Engineer. This has given Heather a wide range of experiences to draw from in her current roles as a Senior Quality Assurance engineer and Scrum Master.
Many will head to the Lucky Lab at 1945 NW Quimby St. after the meeting.

Take the stairs or elevator to the lower level and head East, though you will quickly lose orientation. Look for room 86-01 and note that the parking garage also provides access from a level below for $6, up from $1.50 or so. :( |

AgilePDX User Group - Portland Metro - Virtual Pub Lunch: Agile Transformations
Roll back
| description |
<p>Missing out on roundtable discussions due to location? Try out this virtual gathering.</p> <p>The topic this month is: Agile Transformation<br>What do we think of, when we hear these words? Do we view it as promises of high performing teams and great business success? Or, maybe the transform reaches the entire company, moving the change process from team to leadership, company culture, and customer relationships. And while the 'Manifesto for Agile Software Development' was written by software developers, we can distill its statement to all professions: "We are uncovering better ways of X by doing it and helping others do it." Is this the core of an agile transformation?</p> <p>What are your thoughts? What have you experienced, good or bad? Please join us and share your story and ask questions of others. There are no sages on stages in this discussion, and your contribution will make our discussion richer. This is us, sharing our experiences, and helping each other build on it.</p> <p>Connect with us via Zoom!<br>Zoom Link: <a href="https://zoom.us/j/674417247" class="linkified">https://zoom.us/j/674417247</a></p> <p>Photo by Danielle MacInnes (@dsmacinnes) on Unsplash.</p> |

AgilePDX User Group - Portland Metro - Mob Programming
Roll back
| description |
<p>Join us for a hands-on workshop experiencing Mob Programming!<br>Mob Programming is a software development practice with many benefits - it raises code quality, removes knowledge silos, minimizes mental fatigue, and more. In practice it feels more like a bulldozer than a racecar - unstoppable and thorough.</p> <p>The core of mob programming is pointing many pairs of eyes on a single problem, pushing all the code through a single keyboard. Each month we'll explore different methods for learning to mob well and reaping the rewards of this practice as soon as possible on your own team.</p> <p>Directions: The building you are looking for is on 2nd and Taylor (look for the Starbucks on the ground floor). Take the escalators on the 2nd St. entrance to the WTC Building One second floor lobby (ADA access: ground floor elevator). Take an elevator to the 9th floor (press '9' outside the elevators and use the indicated cab). Follow signs to the Cayuse lobby and sign in for the event.</p> <p>Facilitator Bio:</p> <p>Jeff Patterson is a software quality engineer at Jama Software, language agnostic, quality evangelist, and non-traditional CS grad. He has facilitated Global Day of Code Retreat, founded a peer group to support Community College CS students transferring to University, and is often heard saying, "Software is made of people!"</p> |

JavaScript isn't currently a popular language for machine learning. But is a popular language and it does the ability to easily run an a variety of platforms such as the browser, node, devices, etc.
This week we'll discuss the state of the machine learning eco-system for JavaScript and in particular take a look at TensorFlow.js https://www.tensorflow.org/js/
I'll lead the discussion but this won't be a big presentation. Rather it is an opportunity for you to share your experiences, questions and ideas with everyone else. So take a look at TensorFlow.js and every other JS ML library you can find and tell us what you find, what machine learning projects you'd like to build, what JS ML libraries you like or want to work on/with. |
