Want to learn how to take your projects to the next level?
Practical, Hands-on Training for Scrum
Join us for an all day Scrum workshop on August 20th, 2016; hosted by the IBEA featuring Suzanne Ward MBA MEng PMP CSM CSPO PSM CSP, a Scrum Master & Agile Coach/Trainer from Intel.
Our world is changing fast. Markets and consumers are demanding faster, cheaper and better products. Demands for quicker turnaround on new product development and innovation have only increased. How do companies like Google, Yahoo, Amazon, and Apple keep up? They practice agile techniques, in particular they utilize scrum to manage their projects.
Scrum has the power to transform project management across every industry, every business, and even across your personal life. By using Scrum, you’ll become more agile, discovering how to react more quickly and respond more accurately to the inevitable change that comes your way. By staying focused, collaborating, and communicating with customers and your team, you can accomplish what truly needs to be done — successfully.
Come get a taste of the future of project management and learn about the Scrum process. This one day classroom training with exercises will cover the material from scrum introduction certification class and Product Owner role in the Scrum Process.

<p>Hey everybody. Got a bug you just can't land? Is there a recent CVE you've been eyeballing seductively? Just want to brush up on your APPSEC or OPSEC? Do none of the above questions make any sense, but you're interested in computer security?</p> <p>PDX Exploit Workshop is the longest running security meetup in Portland (10 years!). It's an open, self driven event for people interested in computer security. Whether you're a novice or career professional, all are welcome. It's always a good time to learn about security!</p> <p>We spend this dedicated time each week researching and exploring topics of software and hardware security as well as working on personal and group projects. Occasionally we have presentations on our findings. Bring a willingness to learn, a curiosity about security, and/or a specific area of interest to share with others.</p> <p>This group meets in the PDX Hackerspace mainspace which has comfy seating, deluxe wifi (thanks Kyle!), Club Mate soda in the snack shack, and hackable LED displays to play around with.</p> <p>p.s. This event is open to everyone! No ^H membership is required to attend. All are welcome. That means you!</p> |

Time Series Prediction of SNOTEL Data Part II
Roll back
description |
Sunil Rao will be presenting part II on his research of SNOTEL data using the time series prediction. In this session, Sunil will talk more about his Scala code and visualizations.
Here is the video from his last session.
https://youtu.be/eeZAyUtFD1E
Drought is a serious problem in much of the U.S., with the worst conditions across the southern and western parts of the nation. Much of irrigation and recreation facilities depend on proper forecasting of streamflow. The water supply for irrigation largely comes from rivers and creeks, whose streamflow originates from the springtime melting of winter snow. A water supply forecast is a prediction of streamflow volume that will flow past a point on a stream during a specified season, typically in the spring and summer. One of the primary sources for the data is through NRCS SNOTEL( Snow Telemetry) data (available to the public as part of tax dollars at work). In this demo, we showcase one such tool (Timeseries ARIMAX model) to forecast Streamflow volume for Deschutes River Basin, OR and later compare with actual data to see how it performed.

Join us for May Happy Hour at Vacasa!
PDXWIT is looking forward to seeing you at Vacasa for our next happy hour! The theme for this month is Accessibility in Technology. The conversation starters to keep the networking flowing will be “How can tech be more accessible?” and “What does an accessible tech environment mean to you?”
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase some individuals in our community.
An employee of Vacasa will provide an introduction to the company and share open job opportunities.
Ilana Davis, Creative Director at Ilana Davis LLC, will do a lightning talk titled, “Designing for Inclusion.”
Tasha Zuniga, Full Stack Javascript Developer, will talk about fonts and how to make them accessible.
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
Table Topics to help break the ice.
A section for job seekers and our sponsors who are hiring, to ensure people get connected.
Agenda:
4:30 p.m. - Doors open
5:30 p.m. - Introductions, announcements + speaking segments
6:30 p.m. - Event ends

Come join us for Pythonic talks!
This month:
* Why use Python Type Hints? - by Neil Pilgrim
Python already has types - what are these newfangled hints you speak of? Are they trying to turn my lovely Python into an overly-verbose strict language like Java or C++? Let's explore what these new(ish) aspects of the language look like, and what benefits they can bring - if you want to use them!
* Lessons Learned During Advent of Code 2018 by Chris Freeman
Advent of Code (https://adventofcode.com) is an Advent calendar of small programming puzzles. All AoC puzzles have a solution "that complete in at most 15 seconds on ten-year-old hardware". In this talk, Chris will cover strategies and lessons learning during the 2018 AoC to reach this goal using Python.
About our speakers:
Neil Pilgrim built up his development skills writing scientific physics simulations in C++, but now mainly develops in Python as his language of choice. In the last year or two he has become increasingly engaged with the Open Source Zulip team-chat community after sprinting with them at PyCon 2017, which opened his eyes to the wonder and challenges that Type Hints bring to Python!
Chris Freeman is a freelance computer engineer and software developer. In his spare time, he can be found answering Python questions on the Treehouse Community forum.
Join us afterward upstairs at Bailey's Upper Lip (213 SW Broadway) to continue our snaky discussions over a beverage.
Do you have something you'd like to share? Email us (info@pdxpython.io). |

This will include quick, rapid fire, 20-minute presentations hand selected by the program committee. Talks will be about a range of data-related topics from a diverse range of speakers. Our focus this year is connecting key areas of open science, data journalism, and open government with the wider data software/tools community.
Propose a Talk (due Feb 9, 2019)
Registration Fees. We are a non-profit, community-run conference. Ticket sales pay for catering/venue costs and travel support for speakers/attendees. While csv, conf prides itself on hosting all that are interested, we appreciate registrants choosing the highest teir you or your institution can afford. Honor system. Note: All fees are charged in US dollars.
csv,conf,v4 is about bringing a diverse group together to discuss data topics. There are a limited number of travel awards and comp registrations available for those unable to pay. Please contact an organizer for more information.

Quantum Learning from Symmetric Oracles
Roll back
description |

→ |
The study of quantum computation has been motivated, in part, by the possibility that quantum computers can perform certain tasks dramatically faster than classical computers. Many of the known quantum-over-classical speedups, such as Shor’s algorithm for factoring integers and Grover’s search algorithm, can be framed as oracle problems or concept learning problems. In one model of concept learning, a student wishes to learn a concept from a teacher by making queries of the teacher. In the interest of efficiency, the student wishes to learn the concept by making as few queries as possible. For any such concept learning problem, there is a corresponding quantum concept learning problem. In the quantum version, the student is allowed to ask a superposition of queries – mathematically, a linear combination of queries – and the teacher answers with the corresponding superposition of the responses. After making this idea precise, we will examine several concept learning problems and their quantum analogues. We will discuss recent joint work with Daniel Copeland (UCSD), in which we show how tools from representation theory can be used to precisely analyze any quantum learning problem with sufficient symmetry.
Will also be streamed live on the Galois YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1TJ20iM_dCa0pq6h0tA79w |

Portland Linux/Unix Group General Meeting
Who: Heather Wilcox<br>
What: Software Quality Engineering<br>
Where: PSU, 1930 SW 4th Ave. Room FAB 86-01 (Lower Level)<br>
When: Thursday, April 4th, 2019 at 7pm<br>
Why: The pursuit of technology freedom<br>
Stream: http://pdxlinux.org/live
There is no magic bullet for quality. Nor is there a right tool, script, or any amount of automation that can replace actual thought and effort. Building quality in requires that you first understand what it is. This talk will focus first on defining quality, then we will move to strategies for building the goodness in, and finally ways to test to ensure that both you and your "customers" are getting what they want.
About Heather
Heather Wilcox has spent 24 years working and learning in the software industry, choosing to focus primarily on start-up and small companies. As a result, she has had a broad range of job descriptions which include, but are not limited to: Tech Support Engineer, IS Manager, Technical Writer, QA Engineer, QA Manager, and Configuration Management Engineer. This has given Heather a wide range of experiences to draw from in her current roles as a Senior Quality Assurance engineer and Scrum Master.
Many will head to the Lucky Lab at 1945 NW Quimby St. after the meeting.

Take the stairs or elevator to the lower level and head East, though you will quickly lose orientation. Look for room 86-01 and note that the parking garage also provides access from a level below for $6, up from $1.50 or so. :( |

PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other.
