### Building HTML5 web apps in Java with Vaadin
In this presentation, we'll take a look at building HTML5 web applications in Java using the open source Vaadin framework. Vaadin takes a different approach to web application development by automating many of the most time consuming aspects of traditional web development. Instead of constructing your application from low level DOM elements and manually handling communication and data serialization, Vaadin takes care of server-client communication and allows you to work with higher level UI components in Java. The end result is a great looking HTML5 web application that you can use in any browser without plugins.
During the presentation, we'll build a Vaadin application from scratch to demonstrate the basic principles and development practices hands-on. We'll take a look at why and when you would want to use Vaadin, and will of course investigate how things work under the hood. At the end of the presentation you should have learned enough that you can start building your first Vaadin application.
### Speaker Marcus Hellberg:
Marcus has been working with web technology for the last 15 years on everything ranging from front end development to backend architectures. Currently Marcus works as a developer advocate at Vaadin, helping the web development community learn about new technologies through blogging, workshops, talks and a lot of demo apps. |

The T-Shaped Data Professional - Achieving Data Management Goals with Real Life Examples - DAMA PDX November
Roll back
| description |
<b>
This presentation is an expanded and updated version of “The Multi-Skilled Influencer”, <br>
the highest-rated session at the 2015 Enterprise Data & BI Conference in London.<br>
It was also the keynote at the recent Higher Education Data Warehousing conference in Rochester, NY.
</b>
<p>
Organizations increasingly value individuals who have deep expertise in a specific discipline, such as Data Modeling, but who also possess skills in other areas. This is the so-called “T-shaped skill set” – depth plus breadth.
</p><p>
Becoming “T-shaped” is a goal for anyone in Data – not only does it make you more valuable to your organization, experience shows applying skills not usually associated with Data Management are an excellent way to meet data goals.
</p><p>
After introducing the core ideas behind being “T-shaped”, including the two essential soft skills, we'll look at a variety of real-life examples where Data Management goals have been achieved by applying other skills. In addition to showing how applying these techniques has supported our goals, we'll provide useful tips and frameworks for each of them, with emphasis on four in particular:
</p><ul>
<li>
<b>Business Process Change:</b> Business processes work on "things" (a Part, a Product, an Issue, etc.) which typically move through the process as data; we'll look at techniques to make the "data" perspective valuable;
</li>
<p>
</p>
<li>
<b>Application Requirements:</b> Use Cases and User Stories are well known techniques many Business Analysts struggle with; we'll look at a data model-based approach that overcomes some usual difficulties, and is especially popular in Agile settings;
</li>
<p>
</p>
<li>
<b>General Business Frameworks:</b> Frameworks such as the four quadrants of corporate culture, the impact of paradigms, the enablers of organizational change, and the strategic differentiator have all contributed, often in surprising ways, to achieving Data Management goals;
</li>
<p>
</p>
<li>
<b>Facilitation:</b> Questions that are standard practice for facilitators ("What do you mean by...?") can surface familiar data management issues of consistency and communication, particularly with senior management teams.
</li>
</ul>
<p>
<b>
NOTE: We are also having our annual board elections at this chapter meeting. As a volunteer run organization, we cannot run without participation by our local data community. Establishing Safety in Agile when the Stakes are High
Roll back
| description |

How do we make it safe to explore, fail, and grow when the stakes are high? In a world of high complexity & high cost tied to upcoming revenue forecasts, it’s difficult to allow the time we want & need to try new things, learn new skills, and evolve as a team. So, how do we allow time to fail & ultimately grow when the stakes are high? What have you tried that has succeeded? What have you tried that failed? Come share and discover some new ideas to help your teams balance time with business drivers to create success!
As usual, we'll be in the back. We start at 12 and end at 1pm. Those who attend shape next month's topic. |

Portland Python & PyLadies PDX Present Monthly Presentation Night
Roll back
| description |
# Come join us for out last Presentation Night of 2016!
All levels are welcome! Talk levels vary from beginner to advanced.
This month:
* **Dockerizing Django** by Hannes Hapke & Michael Dougherty
> Have you wondered what steps you would need to go through to convert your Django or Flask project to run nicely with Docker?
> Over the last few weeks, Michael and Hannes went through the process of converting a production Django application including webpack builds, a redis/celery stack and postgres to a docker setup. Moving to an immutable infrastructure provided good support for a zero downtime setup and for standardizing the development environments as well as easy scaling. However, the transition also encountered challenges, which Hannes and Michael will address during their talk. If you are interested to learn about the process, the benefits and the pitfalls, join their talk about dockerizing Django.
There should be time for lightning talks after the presentation. If you have something you want to share, come prepared to give a 5 minute talk. If you've never given a talk before, don't worry we have a [guide](https://github.com/portlandpython/project-night/blob/master/lightning-talks.md)
We're still looking for a pizza sponsor. If your company is interested, please contact us.

Magic Night is a hands on, team oriented, Javascript coding lab, welcoming of all experience levels and backgrounds. We get together because coding is fun; fun to solve hard problems, and fun to work together. We organize into small teams to code up creative solutions to a common challenge, then after 3 hours of building, present to the group.
This month, we'll be divide into teams and work together to create an Alexa app, which is both a lot of fun, and easier to plumb than you'd expect. The challenge will come in the intelligence you and your team bake into the interaction.

Podcast Unconference
Roll back
| description |

→ |
The Portland Podcast Cooperative is hosting Portland’s first Podcast Unconference revolving around the theme of podcasting.
Limited to the first 50 people
The Event
What you don’t need is another presentation, books, or itineraries planned months ahead of time. Instead, what we all really seek when coming to an event is personal value. The best and most meaningful memories come from when we walk away with thought provoking discussions, new relationships, and those do not happen while sitting in lecture. They happen in the discussions that go on amongst the attendees.
The Goal
The goal of this unconference is to bring forth the brightest minds in the community that feel strongly around the topic of podcasting in its many versions. Then from there, to open a new doorway for opportunities to connect and learn, all while having fun and making it what you want it to be.
The Facilitator
Megan O'Leary the Director of Member Services from OEN is going to facilitate the whole unconference event. A great experienced facilitator makes the event, so prepare yourself for a wonderful time.
9:00am-10:00am Coffee & networking
10:00-11:00am Overview and group agenda setting
11:00-11:45am Session 1
11:45am-12:30pm Session 2
12:30pm-1:30pm Lunch
1:30pm-2:15pm Session 3
2:15pm-3:30pm Session 4
3:30pm-4:00pm Closing remarks
Lunch is included. Capiche.
So, what exactly is an ‘Unconference?’
Think of this as an open conference that is driven by its participants. Unlike traditional conferences, an unconference allows for flexibility, open discussion, and debate, all fueled by its attendees. Innovative conversations with some of the brightest people, important purposes and tasks discussed without any formal agenda, and unplanned dialogue led by ultimately what peaks your interest most.
Why attend?
This is your chance to learn from others, seek out answers, and openly ask questions to what matters most to you.
Come to build a collaborative network, establish partnerships, and be in a close community of people that value the same or similar topics of discussion.
Open your awareness to new ideas for yourself or your business.
Be exposed to new trends, latest issues, new projects, emerging businesses and tools..
Unconferences are proven to be highly productive for whatever issues people feel most strongly about. EXPECT fascinating questions, surprising results, inspiring quotes of laughter, and hard work.
How Does it Work?
Simple, we provide the theme — podcasting. When you arrive, we will kick off with an ice-breaker, introduce everyone, then break off into building the day's agenda around your needs, interests, and areas of expertise.
The sessions will be broken up into 30-minute discussions and spaces are reserved for gatherings that happen throughout the day.
Who should attend?
If you took the time to read through all of this, then YOU! The event is open to anyone with an interest in the topic. The goal is to bring a diverse mix of individuals and professionals from all industries and stages of their podcast. Whether you’re a podcast producer, podcast talent, CEO, a startup founder, possible podcast maker with a new idea, or simply just have interest in the topic of podcasting, we welcome you to join us.
All NedSpace events have a Code of Conduct which all participants, members, partners, visitors, vendors, guests must abide by.

Elixir Games PDX - Interproconal Communication Skills
Roll back
| description |

Elixir and Erlang make tremendous tools for integrating between different kinds of interfaces. In fact there's arguably no better system for quickly constructing reliable and fault-tolerant control planes available today. However, in order to do that in a rich ecosystem of technologies it is a requirement that we be able to interact with and orchestrate various kinds of external processes. So for this meetup session we're going to learn about exactly how to do that.
For the newcomers, the "Games" format is designed to create a bit of friendly competition and is accessible for all ranges of experience; beginners and pros alike.
If you'd like to take a look at the previous sessions' exercises feel free to check them out here: https://github.com/elixir-pdx/, some submitted solutions are available on non-master branches.
Early in this series we'll be focusing mostly on solving problems in a functional paradigm, and as the series continues over time we'll move more and more toward Elixir's differentiators; Erlang interop, hygienic macros, & OTP patterns.
If all that read like gibberish to you, don't worry you don't have to know any of that jargon, and by the time you do everything will already make sense. Because we'll introduce ideas and concepts in a way that will help you understand those things conceptually before you ever need a weird name for them.
Food and drinks will be provided.
Please make sure you come with a computer to work on and have Elixir pre-installed locally or in a VM and ready to go.
