Hey everybody. Got a bug you just can't land? Is there a recent CVE you've been eyeballing seductively? Just want to brush up on your APPSEC or OPSEC? Do none of the above questions make any sense, but you're interested in computer security?
PDX Exploit Workshop is the longest running security meetup in Portland (10 years!). It's an open, self driven event for people interested in computer security. Whether you're a novice or career professional, all are welcome. It's always a good time to learn about security!
We spend this dedicated time each week researching and exploring topics of software and hardware security as well as working on personal and group projects. Occasionally we have presentations on our findings. Bring a willingness to learn, a curiosity about security, and/or a specific area of interest to share with others.
This group meets in the PDX Hackerspace mainspace which has comfy seating, deluxe wifi (thanks Kyle!), Club Mate soda in the snack shack, and hackable LED displays to play around with.
p.s. This event is open to everyone! No ^H membership is required to attend. All are welcome. That means you! |

Bring your toys for others to see, or come see what others have been painstakingly chipping away at in their spare time.
Whether it's code or chips, hacking of all sorts is encouraged. But we also like to hear your crazy ideas, so please come join us and bring your willingness to share your brilliance.
p.s. This event is open to everyone, dork or robot. No ^H membership is required to attend. All are welcome. That means you! |

Portland OWASP - So You Want to Learn Security? Bully for You!
Roll back
description |

This talk focuses on building a security curriculum and teaching it, whether individually, at the workplace or in academia. Start with the following question: Am I the right person to do it? A novice can be downright dangerous, while an expert who can't teach as useful as a waterproof teabag. Security education is the first line of defense, but who trains the trainers? Are students getting their money's worth? What differentiates your training from others? Join the speaker to share life lessons, funny anecdotes, and useful advice on lecturing, "curriculuming", and critiquing. Learn what it means to containerize a syllabus, deploy labs in a continuous integration-like environment using open source tools and why markdown is a better tool than PowerPoint for creating new content. Consider security textbooks as obsolete, "office hours" mandatory, and the impact of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). There will be a test at the end of the talk.
Speaker: John L. Whiteman
John is a product security expert and instructor at Intel in Oregon. He's also a part-time adjunct instructor teaching cybersecurity at the University of Portland. In a past life, John was a shipboard and classroom instructor in the United States Navy, training hundreds of sailors in the dark arts of passive sonar and torpedo countermeasure systems (in case the former didn't pan out). He also did a stint as a news director for a small radio station in Colorado. John has an M.S. in Computer Science from Georgia Tech and a B.A. in Asian Studies from the University of Maryland UC. He holds CISSP, CCSP and CEH security certifications. John blogs and loves to podcast for the OWASP chapter in Portland. |

WHEN IT COMES TO REPRESENTATION, TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCES HAVE A DIVERSITY PROBLEM
We can address this challenge by creating space for women* and other underrepresented groups of speakers to get their start.
We believe that the world is better when we can learn from the brilliance of the many, not just the few. 300 Seconds events give our peers, and in particular women, a means of gaining confidence and experience speaking in public.
We give new speakers the opportunity to gain confidence and improve speaking skills in a safe, supportive environment. Our veteran speakers volunteer their time to sharpen up presentations, provide support, connections, and tips on shaping a personal brand.
*By women we mean all women (trans, intersex and cis), all those who experience oppression as women (including non-binary and gender non-conforming people) and all those who identify as women. |

New Relic FutureTalks PDX: Cloud Native Security - a Cultural Change with Pivotal's Steve White
Roll back
description |
nil |
→ |
Join us this November as we partner with PDX Veterans in Technology to hear from US Air Force Veteran Steve White, as he discusses Cloud Native Security.
In a cloud-native world, the "shift left" mindset for security teams is not just about technology, but also about culture. This talk will meld the two topics, bringing together core cloud-native security concepts such as the "Three Rs" of security with the cultural changes needed to achieve the outcomes the security teams are striving for.
Steve White is a Field CISO for Pivotal where he helps organizations envision and implement new ways of integrating security into the software development, deployment, and operations lifecycle. Steve is a veteran of the US Air Force, with 29 years of service across Active-Duty, the Air National Guard and the Air Force reserve, retiring in 2015 at the rank of Lt Col. Beginning when he left active-duty, Steve has worked in a wide variety of technology roles, starting out in the infrastructure and operations space, ultimately working across all technology functions. Most recently his focus has been on cybersecurity, which started with his work in the Washington Air National Guard. Since that beginning, Steve has helped build a cybersecurity consulting practice for Microsoft and then leading security teams for companies such as Amazon, Sonos, and CenturyLink. In his most recent role prior to joining Pivotal he was the Chief Security Officer for ForgeRock. Steve’s passion lies at the intersection of security, infrastructure, and operations. |

In this workshop we will practice design challenges similar to those one might encounter either on the job or during the interview process for a UX, Product or Service Design position. We will approach the challenge with a mindset on innovation before honing on on what aligns with our user experience and business goals.
Using a combination of pre-work, rapid-research and team activities, we will aim to steer away from "safe innovation" and run-of-the-mill solutions to dive deeper into what is possible and what might most delight our users, customer and clients.
During the session we will practice...
Ideation
Innovative thinking
Rapid Prototyping
Design-thinking
White-boarding
...and more!
This workshop is designed for UX and HCD professionals of all skill levels but participants will ideally have a basic understanding of human-centered design, UX design, product design or a similar mindset to get the most out of the night. |
