create Calagator::Event 1250476494 PDX Exploit Workshop Roll back

description nil Hey everybody. Got a bug you just can't land? Is there a recent CVE you've been eyeballing seductively? Just want to brush up on your APPSEC or OPSEC? Do none of the above questions make any sense, but you're interested in computer security? PDX Exploit Workshop is the longest running security meetup in Portland (10 years!). It's an open, self driven event for people interested in computer security. Whether you're a novice or career professional, all are welcome. It's always a good time to learn about security! We spend this dedicated time each week researching and exploring topics of software and hardware security as well as working on personal and group projects. Occasionally we have presentations on our findings. Bring a willingness to learn, a curiosity about security, and/or a specific area of interest to share with others. This group meets in the PDX Hackerspace mainspace which has comfy seating, deluxe wifi (thanks Kyle!), Club Mate soda in the snack shack, and hackable LED displays to play around with. p.s. This event is open to everyone! No ^H membership is required to attend. All are welcome. That means you!

We hope you swing by and say hi. Venue note: For fall we're still meeting at the food cart pod at 11th and SE Madison. We'll be in the west area of the pod with the covered picnic tables, behind most of the food trucks. The pod has a beer cart and many food options - come enjoy dinner with us! It may be a bit rainy, but it shouldn't be too cold plus there are covered areas to sit with heaters! See you there.

description nil There's a wild world of C software out there just waiting to serve a Rustacean's needs, but the terrain can be rocky and unfamiliar. Even if you're already comfortable with Rust, C, or both, wrapping C libraries with FFI can be tricky to navigate. This month, Owen Nelson (@theomn) will recall some of the sights he saw on his recent visits to the C-Side. Hopefully, once you've seen some snapshots of the local landmarks, you'll be encouraged to take a trip of your own!

description nil Reid Havens Demystifying Chart Types and Report Design Principles in Power BI Failing to deliver a well-designed Power BI Report can be a common reporting pitfall. What good is quality data if it is not presented in a way that is meaningful or easily understood? Someone without any prior knowledge should be able to quickly understand a report without explanation and be quickly drawn to the key elements you want them to view. This talk will walk through many elements of bad report design. Learn about visual cues and how certain chart types can convey data more accurately than others. Also, learn about the basic dos and don’ts of report design and layout, using easy-to-learn techniques that bring data to life. Paul Turley Preview: A Best Practice Guide and Checklist for Power BI Projects Whether designing moderate-scale reports for a few business users or large-scale solutions with loads of data for an entire corporation, this session provides best practice guidance for the essential components of Power BI projects. Power BI is a very flexible platform with an vast range of options and often overwhelming design choices. We will discuss recommended practices to manage datasets and reports for team collaboration, version control, query optimization for scale, data modeling design patterns, measure design, dataset certification and governance. We will conclude with a complete checklist of important items to ensure project success.

description nil Protect student data and build flexible tools that help teachers...how do you do both? This is the final meetup in our series on designing for education and we are focusing on designing products with student privacy in mind. Our guest speaker is Dan Siger, the VP of Engineering at Alma Technologies. Alma is a Student Information System (SIS) that handles visual report generation so teachers can easily make sense of data at a glance. Alma products allow teachers to plan instruction, input report cards, and generate state reports with ease. In designing the platform Dan's team at Alma has had to face to face student data issues head on. Come hear him share about his process and get your questions answered! Alma has also graciously sponsored some snacks and beverages for the event. Bring your business cards (or post-its and a pen) and be ready to meet and reacquaint yourself with peers working at the intersection of education and technology. See you there!

description nil Whether you’ve given hundreds of talks, just gave your first talk, or perhaps are thinking of giving a talk next year, we all could use tips in not only overcoming our fears of public speaking but getting good at it. As engineering professionals, sometimes we may focus on the engineering problem and analysis yet don’t realize that how we deliver the message can be just as important as the message itself. If you break a sweat when speaking to more than a few people as we did, you’ll appreciate these transformational tips as Brian and Phil discuss practices for putting together a talk for a conference. As an engineer, learn a step by step pragmatic approach with several techniques and exercises to cure your nervousness and improve your delivery in a systematic way. Public speaking is a top skill for anyone who wants to effect change. Whether speaking to a department, at a meetup or presenting keynotes around the world, Phil and Brian have worked to hone their presentation skills. You’ve heard “Practice Makes Perfect” right? Well, that’s not quite right. “Practice With Feedback Makes Perfect”. In this free workshop, you will learn systematic methods with exercises so that you can improve on the spot. Walk away more confident in your ability to improve your public speaking skills with a framework and techniques for improvement. This is a free three-hour workshop limited to the first 18 people. I'll discuss the ramifications of the results of this journey for users and highlight cautions for developers. We have gone from the simple, a character is a byte, to a character may be tens of bytes, and worse monospace characters are not always the same width when displayed. This is a overview of features every GNU/Linux user should be aware of. It also highlights some issues programmers and sysadmins will face. I am a UTF-8 neophyte trying to fix a broken program that now needs to use UTF-8. I've spent decades porting large programs to new environments. Now I'm planning on integrating a large library to a small program. ATTENTION!
