create Calagator::Event 1250471611 PDXWIT Presents a Book Talk - Daring Greatly & Being Wrong Roll back

description nil RSVP on Eventbrite Every day we experience the uncertainty, risks, and emotional exposure that define what it means to be vulnerable or to dare greatly. In Daring Greatly, based on twelve years of pioneering research, Dr. Brené Brown dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and argues that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage. Similarly, in Being Wrong, journalist Kathryn Schulz argues that error is the fundamental human condition and should be celebrated as such. In this view, error is both a given and a gift – one that can transform our worldviews, our relationships, and, most profoundly, ourselves. Daring Greatly and Being Wrong were made for each other. Join Deeple Patel and Melody Dawn for a discussion and exploration of these two powerful books and their endless takeaways. Most of us avoid the topics of being wrong and vulnerable, but these two authors have laid out the undeniable reasons for why it is so beneficial for us to push past this fear and discomfort. Whether you read one, both or some portion of these books, you are welcome in the conversation. Come ready to share your unique perspective and learn from others’ experiences. PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering: educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.

create Calagator::Event 1250471610 AgilePDX: First, Ignore the Resume - Reexamining Hiring Practices to Improve Diversity Roll back

description nil The tech industry has a contentious relationship with diversity. Despite years of highly publicized initiatives aiming to improve diversity in our field, reports show only marginal improvement in the most well-intentioned workplaces. On the contrary, the recent news is full with fresh accounts of issues in tech companies. So, if we care so much about diversity, what’s holding us back from making real progress? Why do we often have such homogeneous teams, and where does this selection start? And what actually makes up a diverse team? Drawing from his experience as a hiring manager, Dennis explores the biases hidden inside our own hiring practices that can screen out high-quality job candidates. Covering case studies, he shares what the building blocks are for a diverse team, and why we would want to strive to create (or join) one. Dennis’ own non-traditional background made him aware how valuable diverse teams can be, where people with different perspectives collaborate in unique ways to generate novel solutions. Come bring your questions and an open mind, and join this important discussion. All of us are responsible to recognize where people are marginalized and excluded, especially in the current climate. Being agile means finding better ways to implement things. Let’s be agile about diversity. BIO: Dennis, a native Portlander, began his career in L.A. working in Film and TV. Four years ago he returned to Portland and joined the software development world, migrating through the different levels to management and agile coach. His focus now is on hiring and coaching successful (and diverse) development teams.

description nil You know what we mean: Those people who have "just a quick question" or who "only need the team for an hour or so -- 30 minutes might do it." We're talking about the drive-by executive check-ins on sprint progress, the performance review paperwork that (oops!) has to be done by tomorrow, the security training that someone forgot to announce--until it's due according to a regulatory standard. And, what about you? Do you ever find *yourself* being a distraction to the team? In Agile circles, management is famous for mucking up the works. How do you as a conscientious agilist deal with this? What has to change? Come on down to Ringler's and bring a manager or two to let them sound off. We'll be your pub lunch therapists sharing what we've learned and what we're still trying to figure out. Bring us your toughest conundrums and your pummeled agilist hearts. Together we'll cogitate and commiserate until you feel ready to face the workplace again. You know where to find us: We'll be in the back. RSVP's not required but very much appreciated at [email protected]. It helps us alert the pub to staff appropriately. We start on time and end on time. We encourage you to do so, as well.

description nil There are 6 difficult problems frameworks and libraries try to solve in JavaScript, but never quite get there. Learn how these problems (and more!) are solved by ClojureScript and how it can provide a platform for new solutions. Are you tired of constantly chasing after the next framework? Are you looking for something that could make your software radically simpler and let you code better features? ClojureScript could be the answer. In this talk, you'll learn how ClojureScript solves really some tough problems in JavaScript and how it provides a platform for new solutions. description nil The Northwest Regional Women in Computing (NWrWIC) Celebration focuses on empowering and encouraging women to enter the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields, particularly computer science. The conference brings together students from universities and high schools, with industry leaders from the private and public sectors to engage and inspire the next generation of leaders to play an active role in shaping the future of computing and technology. The 2017 conference will focus on Internet Security in Our Evolving World. Our mission is to encourage women to pursue and build successful careers in computing and technology by improving their educational experience and engagement with industry leaders. With less than 30% of STEM jobs filled by women, the industry is lacking full representation of the world’s views. This lack of diversity inhibits industry’s innovation potential. Our effort recognizes and empowers women who are part of the computing industry and celebrates all who are supporters of them. If you are the following, then you would want to come: College professionals, Industry leaders, Tech job seekers, STEM/Technology leaders, Thought leaders, Professors, Teachers, High School STEM students (must be accompanied by guardian), Register for the event at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/nwrwic-2017-tickets-27733352203,

description This month our OWASP chapter is joining forces with the local Angular JS meetup to feature:<br> Philippe De Ryck, PhD<br> Web Security Expert @ imec-DistriNet, KU Leuven Abstract === Angular 2 is hot, and there is a huge amount of information available on building applications, improving performance, and various other topics. But do you know how to make your Angular 2 applications secure? What kind of security features does Angular 2 offer you, and which additional steps can you take to really boost the security of your applications? In this session, we cover one of the biggest threats in modern web applications: untrusted JavaScript code. You will learn how Angular protects you against XSS, and why you shouldn't bypass this protection. We will also dive into new security mechanisms, such as Content Security Policy. Through a few examples, I will show you how you can use these mechanisms to enhance the security in your client-side context. Speaker === Philippe De Ryck is a professional speaker and trainer on software security and web security. Since he obtained his PhD at the imec-DistriNet research group (KU Leuven, Belgium), he has been running the group's Web Security Training program, which ensures a sustainable knowledge transfer of the group’s security expertise towards practitioners. update Calagator::Event 1250471473 AgilePDX: Consciousness Hacking--What's That? Roll back

description We’ve always known the art and craft of software development was frustratingly fun, potently world-driving, and part of an ever-expanding partially composed of a set of skills important to living in the modern world. But, now, there’s a field of study and experimentation that appears to show that the consciousness of the teams that develop software inform the software itself. And, there is software that is designed to heighten our consciousness. What if we used software to heighten the consciousness of software developers to build better products? And why do agilists care? Well: throughput, quality, humane work environments—and things like that. Our panelists will speak to these and related issues of interest to the co-hacking community. Jean Richardson is a member of the AgilePDX Coordinating Committee, an Agile coach and consultant, developer of the Pervasive Leadership theory, and co-author of “Technical Practices as a Hack on Consciousness: Why to Hack Yourself” published on InfoQ on September 1, 2016. In the course of her nearly 30 years in software development she has progressed through the software development specialties of user and technical documentation, field-based ethnographic usability research, testing, instructional design, business analysis, project management, and spent a stint as the Director of Customer Learning for a small healthcare company. Her client lists include such local luminaries as Cambia Health Systems, Portland General Electric, the City of Portland, the Oregon Department of Human Services and Oregon Health Authority, Intel, and Tripwire. azuregate.net @JeanAtAzureGate Julie Nelligan is a personal development coach and psychologist in North Portland. Julie started her career as a coder in the early 90’s focusing primarily on managing large databases before transitioning into coaching.
