create Calagator::Event 1250472095 Data Science: Predictive Analytics @DAMAPDX Roll back

description nil Most of what data scientists do is nothing new, and much of what’s new is really a throwback to what we used to do 20 years ago. So why data science so popular now? In this talk, Dean will describe what differentiates data science from related fields like Business Intelligence, Predictive Analytics, and Statistics, and will illustrate the use of data science from case studies in customer analytics and fraud detection. <h3>Speaker</h3> Dean Abbott is Co-Founder and Chief Data Scientist of SmarterHQ and is based in San Diego, California. Mr. Abbott is an internationally recognized data mining and predictive analytics expert with over two decades of experience applying advanced algorithms to real-world problems, including customer analytics, fraud detection, risk modeling, text mining, personality assessment, and more. He was named as a Mar Tech Superstar by Adweek, one of 26 trailblazers revolutionizing marketing technology. Mr. Abbott is the author of Applied Predictive Analytics (Wiley, 2014) and co-author of IBM SPSS Modeler Cookbook (Packt Publishing, 2013) and is a highly-regarded and popular keynote speaker at Advanced Analytics and Data Science conferences and meetups, is on the Advisory Boards for the UC/Irvine Predictive Analytics and the UCSD Data Science Certificate programs. <h3>About DAMA Portland </h3> The Portland Metro Chapter of the Data Administration Management Association has been serving the Portland data community since 1984. We are a not-for-profit, vendor independent, professional association dedicated to advancing the concepts and practices of enterprise information and data resource management. create Calagator::Event 1250472092 Galois Tech Talk: Robust Artificial Intelligence and Anomaly Detection Roll back

description nil Abstract: Recent progress in AI and machine learning is stimulating interest in applying AI in high stakes applications such as self-driving cars, surgical robots, and autonomous weapons systems. These applications require high levels of software assurance and resilience, but virtually all AI research has focused on raw performance without paying attention to questions of robustness and resilience. In this talk, I will survey AI research that aims to create robust systems. I will consider both robustness to “known unknowns” and robustness to “unknown unknowns” — that is, to unmodeled aspects of the environment. One technology that is relevant to creating robust AI systems is anomaly detection. In the second part of the talk, I will survey the work at Oregon State on anomaly detection. I’ll discuss our recent research on applying anomaly detection to problems of fraud detection and equipment diagnosis and discuss methods for explaining anomaly alarms to an analyst and incorporating analyst feedback into the anomaly detection process. Bio: Dr. Tom Dietterich (AB Oberlin College 1977; MS University of Illinois 1979; PhD Stanford University 1984) is Professor Emeritus and Director of Intelligent Systems Research in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Oregon State University, where he joined the faculty in 1985. Dietterich has devoted his career to machine learning and artificial intelligence. He has authored more than 180 publications and two books. His research is motivated by challenging real world problems ranging from personal information management, to drug design, to sustainability, and most recently to problems in safe and robust artificial intelligence. Dietterich has also devoted many years of service to the research community. He is Past President of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, and he previously served as President of AAAI (2014-16) and as the founding president of the International Machine Learning Society (2001-08). Other major roles include Executive Editor of the journal Machine Learning (1992-98), co-founder of the Journal for Machine Learning Research (2000), and program chair of AAAI 1990 and NIPS 2000. He is currently the moderator for machine learning on arXiv. Dietterich is a Fellow of the ACM, AAAS, and AAAI.

description ## Come join us for Pythonic Talks All levels are welcome! Talk levels vary from beginner to advanced. * **LtSense: using Python to monitor Environmental Sensor Networks** by Sumit Khanna > In 2011, I started working with graduate students at the University of Cincinnati to tackle the problem of monitoring storm water runoff. With a grant from the city, we set out to create open source tools for sensor networks. This presentation will be about LtSense, a tool used to handle data from environmental sensors. > LtSense was written in Python and is designed to work with python-mini on OpenWRT router hardware with 8MB ~ 16MB of storage. It can read data from several different types of sensors, handle unreliable transport, and submit data to our BigSense web service for aggregation. description nil Over the years we’ve seen teams of coders, designers and entrepreneurs from around the world become Whole Developers, watched as their Thoughts Become Things, and proved that Anyone Can Code. We’ve seen the code commit moment over and over again. The “oh sh*t I hope this works” moment. The moment where you know your hopes and dreams of winning that prize, that spot in the accelerator, that idea validation, are all on the line. So, for our 10th Global Hackathon Series, we’re asking you to Commit To Your Code, and in turn commit to your project, a global ecosystem, yourself, your team, and your future. #AH10 is here.

A rubric for ML production systems](https://sites.google.com/site/wildml2016nips/SculleyPaper1.pdf) by Eric Breck, Shanqing Cai, Eric Nielsen, Michael Salib, and D. Sculley. description nil <p>Hello LIT-Lab PDX!</p> <p>We're on track for our next Meetup on Tuesday June 20, when we'll be returning to the Jaguar Land Rover incubator for a very special presentation from Amber Hollister, General Counsel of the Oregon State Bar. </p> <p>Among other things, Amber provides <a href="http://www.osbar.org/ethics/">ethics assistance</a> to Oregon lawyers and others servicing the legal needs of Oregonians. More recently, she has spent the past several months as the Bar's primary contact to the Regulatory Committee of the Futures Task Force of the Bar (the sister committee to the Innovation Task Force that we kicked off here at LIT-Lab back in the fall). </p> <p>Both committees of the Futures Task Force are in the process of finalizing their findings and recommendations to present to the Bar's Board of Governors later this month, and Amber and I will both give you all a preview of those recommendations. (Teaser: if adopted, the recommendations should put Oregon at the national forefront of innovative approaches to Access to Justice issues).</p> <p>Then, Amber will spend a little time talking about the ethics of legal innovation more generally, including plenty of time to answer your questions.</p> <p>NW Corporate Law is generously providing pizza again this time. Hope you can make it!</p>

description nil Frontend, Backend, DevOps! Server-side rendering! SSL and HTTPS and SQL injection?! What the heck does all this jargon actually mean? If you're in a leadership position and you need to fill a tech role, it can be hard to know up from down. If your software engineer tells you to pay for an expensive service "for security reasons", how do you know whether its worth your money? In this workshop, we'll answer the question "how does the internet work" from a Helicopter's perspective. You don't need any programming skills to attend, but be sure to come with questions! By the end, you'll understand the following concepts and how they fit together: - The difference between websites, apps, and servers - Cybersecurity hygeine (and how to avoid being hacked) - Common software developer job descriptions - Basics of computer programming (bring a laptop if you want!) Tickets: Free for Hatch Members, $20 for non members Workshop Leader: Finn Terdal, Technology Manager at Hatch

We read stories and articles on our feeds depicting the inequities — and sometimes monstrosities — our neighbors to the south, in Silicon Valley, face. We feel thankful those thingsdon’t happen here. Unfortunately, those things *do* happen here, often in the shadows, but those involved don’t know whom to tell or where to go. At this year’s summer soiree, our theme is dedicated to openly discussing how we can change the Portland tech culture to be more inclusive, moving away from the bro-culture, and discussing how this community and our allies can work together to make the Portland tech scene a more welcoming place for all. Our conversation starter is “Which label is the least helpful in tech? (e.g. bro-grammer, lady-boss, man-splainer, etc...).” The summer soiree is a mixture of networking and speaking segments, and we will be joined by a diverse group of panelists who will share their stories and insights, leaving us with ideas and next steps to strive for the change we desire: • Moderator: Terra Soma, Senior Organizational Development and Change Consultant at Legacy Health • Lori DeLone, CIO Health Plans at Cambia • Ryan Carson, CEO Treehouse • Deena Pierott, Founder iUrbanTeen and Black Women in Tech Advisory Board member • Katharine Nester, Chief Product and Technology Office Ruby Receptionists During the event, we’ll have an Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look forMeg Aul, our Event Activities Director. PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women. Trans and non-binary people are always welcome at our events. **Please RSVP on Eventbrite** Join us for our third annual summer soiree in partnership withWomen Who Code, Lesbians Who Tech, ChickTech, Girls Inc. hosted by Cambia! create Calagator::Event 1250472068 Magic Night - Javascript Code Challenge Roll back

description nil ## About Magic Night Magic Night is a hands on, team oriented, Javascript coding lab, welcoming of all experience levels and backgrounds. We get together because coding is fun; fun to solve hard problems, and fun to work together. We organize into small teams to code up creative solutions to a common challenge, then after 3 hours of building, present to the group. ## This Month Your mission, should you chose to accept it, is to generate a program that plays a game of rock 0, paper 1, or scissors 2. no random functions allowed! the program should be entirely deterministic. (in other words if your program plays against the same opponent program more than once the sequence of moves should be the same.) your program will receive a list of your opponent's previous moves, your previous moves, and the round number; there will be 1000 rounds per match. The tournament will be round robin format, the program with the greatest number of victories will be declared the rock paper scissors champion.
