description nil → We've had a few presentations on using re-frame and continue to get many questions on this fantastic tool. There is a lot to learn but you will be rewarded when building single page apps. So this month our own Matthew Lyon will present: Constructing Interfaces with re-frame I’ve talked to many clojurists who are curious about front-end programming but don’t know where to start. They haven’t done front-end work before, they’re unfamiliar with JavaScript or React, and they don’t understand how those pieces fit together. I’ll walk through what a ClojureScript development environment looks like; what makes front-end programming different and how React, reagent, and re-frame fit into this; how to create views with Reagent; how to manage state and the outside world with re-frame; and how to effectively debug your front-end code. Matthew Lyon has been building the front- and back-ends for web applications for over twelve years, and with Clojure for three years. He enjoys creating interfaces for helping people work through complex interactions.

description nil → Abstract: Developer tools that support multiple languages generally have very limited regex-based code-analysis capabilities. Tree-sitter is a new parsing system that aims to change this paradigm. We’re in the process of integrating Tree-sitter into both GitHub.com and Atom, which will allow us to analyze code accurately and in real-time, paving the way for better syntax highlighting, code navigation, and refactoring support. We’ll demo some new features that Tree-sitter has enabled in GitHub.com and Atom, discuss its implementation, and share thoughts on ways it could be used in the future. Bio: Max Brunsfeld is an engineer on GitHub’s Atom team. Prior to joining GitHub, he worked at Pivotal Labs as a full-stack engineer. He enjoys programming, especially in C and C++, jazz guitar, bicycling and hiking. He lives in Portland with his wife and two toddlers.

We hold or participate in a great retrospective with high energy and then…nothing. Retrospectives that identify key learnings but don't cause us to adapt and improve as a team can leave us feeling stalled. With no follow up, teams may no longer see the value of holding these key agile ceremonies and sometimes abandon them altogether. Why does this continue to be a challenge for Agile teams? The Best Contributor award will be selected in advance by a panel and finalists for the Best Speaker Award will perform runoff Lightning Talks at the Holiday Party. The winner will be selected by text-to-vote. At Women Who Code, we regularly celebrate the achievements of our members through the #ApplaudHer hashtag. We use #ApplaudHer to highlight victories ranging from accepting a new position and receiving a promotion to speaking at a conference and meeting a personal goal. The concept is simple: we believe that recognition can create change and that rewriting public perceptions can transform tech. During the Women + Tech Holiday Party, we will announce our Tech Leadership and Rising Tech Star winners from the many submissions we have received throughout the year. description nil → Abstract: Habit is a high-level programming language, originally based on Haskell, that was designed to meet the needs of high assurance, very low-level software development. The most recent version of the language report was completed in 2010, and an initial working prototype implementation was developed by the HASP group at PSU. However, there has not been a lot of externally visible news about the language or its implementation since then. In this talk, I will provide an introduction to the goals of Habit (no previous experience is assumed), and an update on the status of its current implementation as we continue to edge towards a broader public release. In particular, this talk will discuss the challenges of meeting the performance requirements for typical systems software; the benefits of programming in a source language with high-level functional abstractions and expressive types; and the role that whole-program optimization can play in bridging between these two worlds. Bio: Mark Jones is a professor in the Department of Computer Science at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon. His primary research focus is on the use of advanced programming language technologies that support the construction and certification of secure and reliable software systems.
