On your bike, you can enter the building parking lot from SW 5th & Pine, go right at the bottom of the ramp, and head into the elevators that are directly ahead. The elevator on the far right has a special “go by bike” button. Use that to summon the elevator and make your way to 27. We have a few guest bike parking spots behind the reception desk.
via Trimet/Max:
The Green, Yellow, and Orange lines go to SW 5th and Oak. The Green and Yellow lines go to SW 6th and Pine. Note, the Red and Blue lines at Mall/SW 5th Ave MAX Station are about a 7 minute walk. Multiple bus lines stop at SW 5th and Pine. Remember, Trimet is now supporting Hop cards (https://myhopcard.com/home/#/). The Trimet trip planner is here -- https://trimet.org/#/planner
We're on the 27th floor. Grab a name tag as you head off the elevator and head into the conference room.

CNPDX March: Continuous Container Testing (and 1.10)
Roll back

Please RSVP on Meetup.com if you can, so that we can get a headcount for ordering food!
Kubernetes 1.10 will release (hopefully) on the 26th. So, first, Josh Berkus of the Kubernetes 1.10 Release Team will be presenting "What's in 1.10?" including Advanced Auditing, CronJobs, Dynamic Kubelet Configuration, Persistent Volume Protection, and more.
Next, Dan Anolik will present "Continuous Testing of Containers". He works at Cambia Health Solutions where his team containerizes everything, including the API tests for every service container. He'll demonstrate their solution for automated testing of containers during CI/CD workflows, and again later in runtime clusters. Dan's team makes strong use of Cucumber for API tests, and Docker Compose for managing our mock environments, but the techniques would work across multiple frameworks.

***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-april-happy-hour-tickets-43860513978] is required to gain entry to this event ***
Join us for happy hour at Squarespace on April 17th.
Do you want to amplify your voice? We do too, so we are dedicating this event to being heard, which can be accomplished in a number of ways. To facilitate the conversation, the topic of the night is “how to inject your voice into the workplace.”
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase three women in our community.
Introduction to Squarespace, including what they do and what job opportunities are available.
Emily Milburn, Technical Project Leader at Corvel, will encourage us to practice communication skills that elevate our assertive voice.
Tiffany Longworth, Site Reliability Engineer at Puppet, will talk about tactical and whimsical ways to leverage fun to get work done.
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
- An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
- Table Topics to help break the ice.
- A section for job seekers and our sponsors who are hiring, to ensure people get connected.
Agenda:
4:30 p.m. - Doors open/Networking
5:30 p.m. - Introductions, Announcements + Lightning Speakers
6:30 p.m. - Event ends

Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome.

Tyrone Poole, Founder of OneApp Oregon, On Entrepreneurship - Presented by The Urban League of Portland Young Professionals

During this Leadership Narrative lunch and learn, Tyrone Poole (founder of One App Rentals) will talk about what it truly takes to win as an entrepreneur and how failing is a part of the journey. This is a great opportunity to meet with and learn from one of Portland's shining stars. Seating is limited so register now and reserve your spot!
ABOUT ONEAPP OREGON
OneApp Oregon was started out of necessity. Tyrone Poole, Founder and CEO, was training to become a firefighter when he suffered a gruesome injury that hospitalized him. With no insurance or income, Tyrone's bills piled up and by the time he was released from the hospital he was broke and homeless. Tyrone took shelter in the YWCA, where he made it his mission to help people find housing. In his time helping people, one thing became very clear: application fees and the uncertainty of applying to properties were crippling. Application fees can cost upwards of $50, and there's no way for an applicant to know whether they meet the property's criteria. From this realization, an idea was born: one application, one application fee, transparency to all properties. OneApp Oregon was born.
COST: $10 (includes boxed lunch), proceeds to go towards future YP programming and events

The Future of Work is collaborative and improvisational. Traditional, top-down chains of command and career competition are the ways of the past. Status is increasingly based on knowledge, contribution, and level of connection, not just position and power.
During this experience you will learn how to design your own framework and collaborative leadership practices to become a future-oriented leader and team member.
Join us for this unique event, presented by The PEAK Fleet, with a special, storytelling set by the Mel Brown Septet. A Portland jazz icon since 1973, Mel, alongside his bandmates, will demonstrate how to create a culture that sustains successful improvisational and collaborative groups.
A Design Week Portland event, including refreshments, special art installation, and other activities.

PDX OSGeo Monthly meeting
Roll back
| description |

Monthly meeting of the Portland open source GIS group. Projects big and small are usually presented monthly along with rousing conversation and discussion. All are welcome, no need to RSVP - our group ranges from the geo-curious to the überhackers so bring your ideas and questions!
This month's agenda: exciting happenings in geodata, upcoming geoevents and bring your own geo-show and tell.
Special guest special guest is Dave Percy, from PSU Geology. Percy will be talking about "Web mapping with QGIS2Web":
Qgis2Web is a plugin for QGIS, desktop GIS software, that converts map data into a Leaflet app running in the browser. This demo will show how to create a simple online map with multiple raster layers and one vector layer that has image popups. This particular application is unusual in that it is a thin-section of rock approximately 24x46 mm with embedded electron microscopy images.
Percy is PSU Geology department's GIS Geek for the last 20 years, and helped form PDX-OSGeo way back in 2006, so come on out and enjoy some pizza, learn about QGIS, and get your monthly OSGeo fix.
As always, there will be pizza! And BYOB is always welcome.

Each week we share a 20-minute TED-style talk with a 10 minute Q&A. We spend the second half of the session collaborating on new topic ideas. At the end of the session, we vote on the most interesting topic. The winning idea will get the innovator of the week and an opportunity to "Show and Tell".
Our group loves sharing, innovation, and inspiring others. It's extremely fun to share your passion with the community.

Immersive startups: A conversation with AR/VR founders
Roll back
| description |

Immersive technology like augmented and virtual reality is creating a rapidly growing new industry. A report from Tech Trends’ Editor-in-chief, Alice Bonsaio cites this fast growing sector estimated to be $162B by 2020! Far beyond gaming and entertainment, there is potential for this technology to disrupt everything from healthcare and architecture to changing the way we maintain global supply chain. Join us for an engaging evening of conversation with early startup founders and those that support them, as we explore the experience of being on the ground floor of this new immersive reality.
The evening will start with a presentation from Russell Ladson, the Founder of Drop, a ViveX company. Russell will then be joined by two to three other local startup founders in the immersive tech space. We will have a candid conversation about their experiences as founders in the new field, the current state of this technology and where it is headed, along with Q&A from the audience. It will be an insightful and engaging panel. |

This event is for Raspberry Pi/Arduino/Microcontroller enthusiasts to meet, do show-and-tell, mentor, learn and build. We welcome people of all backgrounds and levels, and will help new users get started. Instead of a "pot luck" we have a "parts luck" where you are encouraged to exchange project parts with others.
• What to bring
Computer. Raspberry Pi and/or Arduinos if you have them. Projects that you want to share. Items for the "parts luck" swap bin.
• Important to know
The shop where this is held only has space heaters - so please dress warmly on colder days. On very cold days, we will forego building and have a social in a heated space, if we can't find an alternative spot.

Ever wonder how autonomous cars or drones use computers for autopilot? Did you know Python is very powerful when it comes to detecting objects in an image? Imagine what it can do with a video? There is a tremendous amount of data in the video. Garrett will show an example program that can detect an object in your own webcam.
There are a few steps in the process. First, you have to gather negative files you want to use as background images.
Second, you will create positive images by superimposing the image you want to detect.
Last you will train a cascade file for your Python program to detect. I'll show you the three functions and how to run the training model. Plus demonstrate the live version of image detection. I have so much to cover in such a limited amount of time. I'm sure you'll learn and enjoy the topic. We'll have the 30-minute demo and at the end of our session, we'll brainstorm and vote on new interesting topic ideas for upcoming presentations. The winning idea will get the innovator of the week.

Service gateways are a great new invention for improving the reliability and management of microservices. They provided nice features, like service monitoring, load balancing, creative routing, canarying, and fault injection. To learn more, join PJUG on Tuesday as Biju Kunjummen, from Pivotal, talks about service gateways, and about Netflix Zuul and the Spring Cloud Gateway in particular.

Nike Tech Talks
Roll back

Join Microsoft senior cloud developer advocate Paige Bailey at the next Nike Tech Talks on March 22! Paige will give a talk titled, Predicting Clothing Styles with Deep Transfer Learning.
Food and beverages will be served and there will be time to network before and after the talk.
RSVP: https://niketechtalk-mar2018.splashthat.com/
ABSTRACT:
In this talk, we'll use image recognition to take an existing deep learning model and adapt it to a specialized domain (namely: guessing whether articles of clothing are preppy, sporty, punk, etc.). Instead of using a more intensive data classifier, like a Residual Network, we'll use deep transfer learning to overcome a data scarcity problem and build on top of an existing model.
Once the transfer learning model has been trained, we'll pack it up into a dockerized container (specifying inputs and outputs, as well as a score.py file), and then call it as a web service. We will also discuss a #DataOps process for refreshing the model as trends change over time. |
