Portland has a fairly lively Clojure ecosystem -- how can we leverage that base and become a hub of Clojure culture?
The biggest opportunity appears to be in helping newcomers connect the dots. The language was designed to be clear, consistent, practical, and empowering -- this talk will explore how we can apply those principles to support the local scene and create an onboarding model other groups can use.

New to the language and somewhat obsessed, Tom has worked as a writer, editor, and programmer. He hosts the Tuesday night Clojure Study Crew, and is currently building what he hopes will be the next best Clojure documentation tool. |

Tech culture needs to change. All too often, underrepresented groups are marginalized and excluded as a result of implicit bias, often expressed through microaggressions. Creating a culture in which everyone experiences a sense of acceptance and belonging requires a collective commitment.
Changing the culture requires a lot of people making individual choices that actively tear down and confront everyday biases and microaggressions. Such work is difficult and takes practice. Lack of understanding, personality traits, friendships, professional goals and a fear of offending people all get in the way of confronting bias and its harmful effects.
Based on research and experience, “Creating a Culture of Inclusion and Equity” brings to light the impact of cultural bias and how to bring about change. Using concrete, typical scenarios, participants will learn about the relationship between implicit bias and the microaggressions that can surface. Participants will discover their own personal obstacles and identify and practice strategies to engage in culture change.
Biographies
The workshop is co-facilitated by Kristina Houck, LCSW and Tanya Crenshaw, PhD.
Kristina is a Clinical Social Worker with more than a decade of experience as a therapist and advocate. She has implemented several bystander intervention projects to create communities of inclusivity and safety. She facilitates difficult conversations with openness and authenticity.
Tanya has a Computer Science Ph.D. with over twenty years of technical experience. A published researcher, she has spent over a decade investigating people’s sense of community and belonging in tech. Her candidness inspires action.
Together, Kristina and Tanya provide practical solutions for complex problems.

Luckily, some upfront investment and preparation can really go a long way in helping you distinguish yourself from the rest of the candidates. In this seminar led by an engineering leader at Elemental, we will cover some common interviewing practices for technical interviews and what you may be able to do to get ready. We plan to cover many beneficial topics:
• Morning preparation, attire, mindset
• Preparation for the non-technical parts
• How to study for the coding interview
• How to execute the coding test
Due to the level of interaction required, attendance will be capped at 20. Never fear: we will be organizing this same event bi-monthly because we want everyone to have access to this session!

At this informal happy hour (much like the Downtown Pub Lunch and Westside Cafe) we are seeking feedback from the community about the governance model you would like to see in the bylaws, whether you seek influence as a formal member helping to lead the community or whether you are happy for a small core group to go forward as a leadership team making strategic and tactical decisions on behalf of the community.
