Portland Linux/Unix Group General Meeting
Who: Tony Bourke<br>
What: Why Packets Die<br>
Where: PSU, 1930 SW 4th Ave. Room FAB 86-01 (Lower Level)<br>
When: Thursday, June 6th, 2019 at 7pm<br>
Why: The pursuit of technology freedom<br>
Stream: http://pdxlinux.org/live
Why do packets die? What happens inside data center switches and WAN routers that cause packets to die? In this talk, Tony does packet walks explaining in simple, relatable terms what happens when a packet leaves a server and doesn't make it's destination. Network congestion and its affects on buffering, queuing, QoS, rate limiting and shaping are all topics covered. Topics that can be scary to server administrators, but Tony breaks them down to very simple components. Also discussions on why protocol overhead doesn't much matter, and why jumbo frames don't matter to the network for performance are discussed.
Tony Bourke is a networking instructor teaching primarily Cisco and related technologies. He is also a certified skydiving instructor and parachute rigger. He lives in Portland, Oregon but can be found all over the world teaching or skydiving (or both).
Many will head to the Lucky Lab at 1945 NW Quimby St. after the meeting.
Rideshares to the Lucky Lab available

See you there.</p> <p>Are you interested in giving a presentation or lightning talk on something you have been tinkering with or learned? We are always looking for more presentations. It’s a pretty low key group. Reach out to Daniel and we will make it happen.</p> <p>Speaker Details</p> <p>Sean's been convinced there are better ways to develop applications across the stack for years, and built time-traveling debuggers, interface builders, layout tools, and graphic design tools in his quest to explore the space. His company was the first to deploy ClojureScript's Om library to a production app in early 2014, he helped lay the architecture for CircleCI's open-source frontend app and precursorapp.com, built systems to support tens of millions of dollars in transactions, and most recently founded OneGraph, a single GraphQL endpoint for all your most important APIs.</p> |

Hack the Dot is a two-hour hackathon where coding school students, junior developers, experienced developers, non developers, marketers, designers, and those with little or no computer programming skill come together to build ideas around a single domain name.
Our events are meant to be a quick and fun way to build a humorous (and functional) product quickly while meeting people in your tech/startup community. |

PDXWIT Summer Soiree

***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-technology-summer-soiree-tickets-61894666614] is required to gain entry to this event ***
Join us for our annual Summer Soiree at The Armory, brought to you by Intel and Cambia Health Solutions.
The theme for this year’s Summer Soiree is Social Change in Open Source. It is difficult to break into open source for two key reasons. One, it is community driven technology and many people do not have the time or capacity to do the unpaid work that is often required to get involved. Two, even if you do have the time to contribute, it can be very difficult and even toxic if you are a woman or minority due to harassment by leaders in that space. These barriers, along with so many others that underrepresented folks are facing, make it difficult to have the experience required to obtain sought-after jobs at companies doing open source work.
To support this discussion, our conversation starter for the evening is “how can open source be more accessible to underrepresented communities?”
The Summer Soiree will feature a panel discussion followed by networking.
Moderator: Dr. Harriet Nembhard, School Head of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering at Oregon State University
Panelist: Sage Sharp is a Diversity and Inclusion consultant and the founder of Otter Tech
Panelist: Esther John is Director of Software Stacks Engineering in the System Software Products at Intel Corporation
Panelist: Tara Robertson is the Diversity & Inclusion Strategic Partner for Mozilla
During the event, we’ll have an Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
We will also have a community partners section featuring amazing organizations:
Women Who Code
Adelante Mujeres
Girls Inc
Here’s more on our event sponsors:
Cambia Health Solutions, headquartered in Portland, Oregon, is dedicated to transforming health care. Our company reaches more than 70 million Americans nationwide, including more than two million people in the Pacific Northwest who are enrolled in our regional health plans.
Intel Corporation’s Women of System Software is an organization of technical professionals committed to fostering an inclusive environment and building a strong community for women and non-binary people in software technology.
Agenda:
5:30 p.m. - Doors open / Networking
6:30 p.m. - Introductions
6:45 p.m. - Panel Begins
7:30 p.m. - Networking
8:00 p.m. - Event ends

Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome.

*** Please note that this meeting is a special event in addition to our regular 3rd Monday meeting! ***
Join us for a happy hour, and play "Strategic Privacy by Design: The Game"!
Based on the book by the same name, this card game allows players to attempt to design a new service with privacy in mind. Use tactic cards to protect information and prevent violations, and ultimately, avoid the consequences on your product when it is released. Play cooperatively (and try to earn 'not consequences' for the team) or competitively (and try to earn less consequences than other players).
The game was developed by R. Jason Cronk, author of "Strategic Privacy by Design". He spoke to our group about privacy by design (PbD) back in May of 2017 and is back in town for another visit. Come out for an evening of fun with other privacy-minded people, and test your skills at designing with privacy in mind!
Speaker bio:
With more than fifteen years of experience in the Information Technology industry and as a licensed attorney in Florida, Robert Jason Cronk is a creative and analytical thinker, able to traverse the realms of business, law, and technology. In 2004, while working in the information security department of Verizon, Mr. Cronk decided to make his long standing personal interest in information privacy a career choice. In 2006, he entered Florida State University School of Law where he focused his research on privacy law issues, including authoring a white paper on the intersection of privacy and public records for the Florida First Amendment Foundation. After graduating, with honors, he earned his CIPP/US, was admitted to practice in Florida and has become an active member of the privacy professionals community through his involvement in the International Association of Privacy Professionals. He has since been awarded the Certified Information Privacy Technologist (CIPT), Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) and Fellow of Information Privacy designations by the IAPP. In October of 2018, he released his first book, "Strategic Privacy by Design" and has developed a corresponding game.
Mr. Cronk currently writes, blogs and speaks on topics such as privacy and data security law, privacy by design, privacy engineering, privacy enhancing technologies (PETs), digital currencies, and privacy in public records. His twitter handle is @privacymaverick and his blog can be found at http://www.privacymaverick.com.

<p>Hey everybody. Got a bug you just can't land? Is there a recent CVE you've been eyeballing seductively? Just want to brush up on your APPSEC or OPSEC? Do none of the above questions make any sense, but you're interested in computer security?</p> <p>PDX Exploit Workshop is the longest running security meetup in Portland (10 years!). It's an open, self driven event for people interested in computer security. Whether you're a novice or career professional, all are welcome. It's always a good time to learn about security!</p> <p>We spend this dedicated time each week researching and exploring topics of software and hardware security as well as working on personal and group projects. Occasionally we have presentations on our findings. Bring a willingness to learn, a curiosity about security, and/or a specific area of interest to share with others.</p> <p>This group meets in the PDX Hackerspace mainspace which has comfy seating, deluxe wifi (thanks Kyle!), Club Mate soda in the snack shack, and hackable LED displays to play around with.</p> <p>p.s. This event is open to everyone! No ^H membership is required to attend. All are welcome. That means you!</p> |

Come judge the Text A Lawyer Battle Royal! Katia v. Kevin You decide who pitches in June to the crowd of silicon valley investors!
The Text A Lawyer co-founder team is preparing for an investor demo day event in the bay area in early June. We're looking to discern who should handle pitching and who should handle Q&A. We're planning to record things so we can replay all your helpful feedback (internal use only, promise).
We are going to follow the time format precisely:
10 minutes -- introduction
5 minutes -- Katia will pitch
10 minutes -- Katia's Q/A session
5 minutes -- Kevin will pitch
10 minutes -- Kevin's Q/A session
10 minutes -- Katia and Kevin will leave the room for the judges (you) to deliberate. Yes, we'll leave the recording on so we can listen later but we're hoping you can speak freely an honestly. -- We can take some tough love.
10 minutes -- We'll quickly tally the votes and announce who's doing what in at the Batchery.com demo day next month. Share a drink and snack with us - we'll stay around to chat.
TOTAL: 1 hour of your time means the world to us!
To show our appreciation we'll provide BEER/soda/water and chips/candy/hummus/celery type of refreshments and light snacks. Please email [email protected] to confirm (so we know how much food/drinks to purchase).
Thank you,
K2 (Kevin and Katia)

Tech Academy Portland Meetup - Intro to Small Basic: A Free Coding Class at The Tech Academy

<p>We run a code school. We hear from a lot of people we talk to that they're not sure whether they're interested in a job in the tech field, because they don't know enough about it. Sometimes, they've even been told that "programming is hard to learn."</p> <p>At The Tech Academy, we work hard to break down the barriers between people and technology. We think that, with the right approach, anyone can learn to code - and whether you end up working in technology or not, the principles behind coding are useful in a lot of areas.</p> <p>The Tech Academy is offering a free course on Introduction to Small Basic. Small Basic is a Microsoft language that gives users exposure to many of the fundamental skills used in more complex coding languages.</p> <p>This course is perfect for people with little to no experience in programming who are curious about a career in software development.</p> <p>In this practical, hands-on class, you'll learn the basics of these popular technologies - and along the way, you should find out for yourself whether technology and coding are something worth looking into a bit more deeply.</p> <p>Please Note:<br>---Make sure to bring your laptop, as this will be a hands on learning process where you get to actually write your own code. If you don't have a laptop, no worries, you will be able to use one of ours.<br>---An RSVP is needed to guarantee a seat in the class, though we may have a few open seats for last minute attendees.</p> |
