create Calagator::Event 1250475733 PDX OSGeo Monthly meeting Roll back

description nil Monthly meeting of the Portland open source GIS group. Projects big and small are usually presented monthly along with rousing conversation and discussion. All are welcome, no need to RSVP - our group ranges from the geo-curious to the überhackers so bring your ideas and questions! We have a couple of really interesting topics this month: - We'll check out "Mapping Inequality" [1], a project out of University of Richmond, University of Maryland, Virginia Tech and John Hopkins. The project uses Leaflet and CartoDB to display georeferenced maps and redlining data from in the late 30's - with a focus on redlining and abrasive, unfiltered racist language that has directly influenced the formation of neighborhoods today. - We also have a very cool spatial analysis presentation from Kevin that will show how he used PostGIS, QGIS and Geopy to calculate the most remote locations in Oregon and Washington, along the lines of what Project Remote [2] has been doing for the whole lower 48. Kevin's project also used Leaflet, MapboxGL JS and Turf for visualization. We'll also cover the latest happenings in geodata, upcoming geoevents and bring your own geo-show and tell, so if you see something interesting in your geo-travels be sure to bring it along to share! As always, there will be pizza! And BYOB is always welcome. Our mailing list is here drop us a line with any questions: http://groups.google.com/group/pdx-osgeo

update Calagator::Event 1250475620 PDXHCD Interaction Design Networking Meetup Roll back

description Join us for a mixer of people working across various interaction design (IxD) disciplines. This kickoff event is an opportunity for us to talk more about the work people are doing without slides or speakers. If you're a long-time member of the interaction design community in Portland, find yourself new without a network, or simply want to talk about what's going on, here's your chance to get connected! We'll use this as an opportuntiy to discuss topics we might use for future meetings, learn what types of work people are doing in the community, and amplify efforts to broaden the interaction design community throughout Portland. Dark Patterns are tricks used in websites and apps that make you buy or sign up for things that you didn't mean to. Designers and developers often abdicate our responsibility to remove deceptive patterns from design. In this talk, we'll explore some dark patterns, talk about how it parallels with older industry practices, and what we should do about before it's too late to fix. We'll also use this as an opportunity to meet others working across interaction design disciplines. If you're a long-time member of the interaction design community in Portland, find yourself new without a network, or simply want to talk about what's going on, here's your chance to get connected!

create Calagator::Event 1250475721 Six Sigma Primer Workshop Roll back

description nil NOTE: Proceeds from ticket sales for this workshop go to Lean Portland in support of our volunteer efforts with nonprofits. Whether you work for a manufacturing company, work in an office, or provide customer service, Six Sigma can help you solve important and challenging problems within your organization, using a structured approach and data analysis. In this Six Sigma primer we’ll address: - How the DMAIC model and analysis tools increase the chance of solving problems - The different Six Sigma belt certification levels (Yellow, Green, Black and Master Black Belt) - Popular analysis tools such as graphical tools, designed experiments (DOE), measurement studies, statistical process control, regression analysis and statistical software - How Six Sigma compares to Lean - Examples of Six Sigma applied to sustainability (environmental and social) - Exercises for measuring time and conducting experiments Join Brion Hurley from Business Performance Improvement to better understand how Six Sigma can be integrated into your organization. Roots of Six Sigma In 1986, engineers Bill Smith & Mikel J Harry introduced Six Sigma within Motorola, as a way to improve business performance, and make it easier for employees to utilize effective quality improvement tools. Why did Motorola come up with this program? It all began in the late 1970s, when a Japanese firm took over a Motorola factory that manufactured television sets in the United States. The Japanese promptly set about making drastic changes to the way the factory operated by reducing the variation from product to product. The factory was soon producing TV sets with 1/20th the number of defects they had produced under Motorola management, and this translated to fewer warranty claims and customer complaints. Six Sigma refers to the ability of processes to produce a very high proportion of output within specification (without defects or errors). Processes that operate with "six sigma quality" over the short term are assumed to produce long-term defect levels below 3.4 defects per million opportunities. After Motorola achieved tremendous quality improvements, the popularity spread to other companies. Jack Welch, CEO of General Electric (GE) made it integral to his business strategy in 1995, requiring his managers to achieve Green Belt certification if they wanted to get promoted. By the late 1990s, about two-thirds of the Fortune 500 organizations had begun Six Sigma initiatives with the aim of reducing costs and improving quality. Today, Six Sigma continues to be practiced and implemented within many manufacturing, banking, healthcare, service and financial organizations. update Calagator::Event 1250475720 AgilePDX User Group - Portland Metro - From Mindset to Consciousness: Playing the Infinite Game of Human Development Roll back

description <p>Agile is part of an evolution in consciousness--in the nature of our awareness and noticing skills and our knowledge of self and other. When agile emerges in an organization, it does so within a consciousness unlike its own. Yet, our approaches to agility often impede its ability to stick where it emerges.</p> <p>Agilists have used the frames of mindset and learning. But, we need to use the frames of consciousness and development in order to truly transform. In doing so, we see agile transformations are actually personal transformations. Organizations don't change, people change and then the organization adapts.</p> <p>This deep dive session discusses the agile mindset and puts “mindset” in the context of “consciousness.” It speaks to advancing agilists who are trying to understand why adoptions go wrong when they have done everything "right." update Calagator::Event 1250475719 AgilePDX User Group - Portland Metro - Agile Practitioners Book Club: Simon Sinek's Start with Why Roll back

description <p>Join us for a beer (or beverage of your choice) and a snack at the Rogue Eastside Pub to discuss Start with Why by Simon Sinek. (Our poll tied twice, and this is part two!)</p> <p>Here's the book in a nutshell, according to the handy Amazon description: "In 2009, Simon Sinek started a movement to help people become more inspired at work, and in turn inspire their colleagues and customers. Since then, millions have been touched by the power of his ideas, including more than 28 million who’ve watched his TED Talk based on START WITH WHY -- the third most popular TED video of all time.</p> <p>Sinek starts with a fundamental question: Why are some people and organizations more innovative, more influential, and more profitable than others? Why do some command greater loyalty from customers and employees alike? Even among the successful, why are so few able to repeat their success over and over?</p> <p>People like Martin Luther King Jr., Steve Jobs, and the Wright Brothers had little in common, but they all started with WHY. They realized that people won't truly buy into a product, service, movement, or idea until they understand the WHY behind it.</p> <p>START WITH WHY shows that the leaders who've had the greatest influence in the world all think, act, and communicate the same way -- and it's the opposite of what everyone else does. Sinek calls this powerful idea The Golden Circle, and it provides a framework upon which organizations can be built, movements can be led, and people can be inspired. And it all starts with WHY."</p> <p>Let's ponder and talk about how asking WHY will help us or hinder us on our agile journeys.</p> <p>Join the #reading channel in our AgilePDX slack workspace to share your thoughts & ideas about this and future reads. Not part of AgilePDX slack? Send a request to [masked] and we'll invite you.</p> <p>Events are made possible by the AgilePDX community and our sponsors, including platinum sponsor ProFocus Technology (<a href="https://www.profocustechnology.com/" class="linkified">https://www.profocustechnology.com/</a>). description **Please RSVP on our Meetup page to reserve your spot: ** https://www.meetup.com/AgilePDX-User-Group-Portland-Metro/events/262003435/ **If you are unable to attend, please update your RSVP to open your seat for another attendee.** <p>Join us for a hands-on workshop experiencing Mob Programming!</p> <p>This workshop starts with a short discussion, then we will dive right in to mobbing on a simple programming problem that includes tests! We provide plenty of opportunities to ask questions and reflect on what we're learning.</p> <p>All skill levels and software disciplines are welcome!!! The mob programming workshop is a risk free, safe space for you to learn and experiment with this energizing and effective way of creating software!</p> <p>Mob Programming is a software development practice with many benefits - it raises code quality, removes knowledge silos, minimizes mental fatigue, and more. In practice it feels more like a bulldozer than a racecar - unstoppable and thorough.</p> <p>The core of mob programming is pointing many pairs of eyes on a single problem, pushing all the code through a single keyboard. Each month we'll explore different methods for learning to mob well and reaping the rewards of this practice as soon as possible on your own team.</p> <p>Directions: The building you are looking for is on 2nd and Taylor (look for the Starbucks on the ground floor). Take the escalators on the 2nd St. entrance to the WTC Building One second floor lobby (ADA access: ground floor elevator). Take an elevator to the 9th floor (press '9' outside the elevators and use the indicated cab). Follow signs to the Cayuse lobby and sign in for the event.</p> <p>Facilitator Bio:</p> <p>Jeff Patterson is a software quality engineer at Jama Software, language agnostic, quality evangelist, and non-traditional CS grad. He has facilitated Global Day of Code Retreat, founded a peer group to support Community College CS students transferring to University, and is often heard saying, "Software is made of people!"</p> <p>Events are made possible by the AgilePDX community and our sponsors, including platinum sponsor ProFocus Technology https://www.profocustechnology.com/). This event is aimed at getting people in the North and NE areas of Portland and Vancouver together to facilitate discussions. It's not exclusive to people that live in the North and NE, just closer to those parts of the city to make it easier to come out.</p> <p>We'll spend the first few minutes gathering discussion ideas, then roll right into the smooth easy cadence of the lively chatter.</p> <p>If you aren't going to be able to make it, please update your RSVP so that we know how many to expect.</p> <p>Parking:<br>Use the Gotham Building Parking lot on the corner of N Page St and N Borthwick Ave.</p> <p>Building Entry:<br>Entry to the building is best through the door by Little Gotham Coffee. We'll have someone meeting on time attendees at the door. For those that run a few minutes late due to traffic or other reasons out of your control, there will be directions at the door on how to contact someone to let you in.</p> <p>Weather Policy:<br>Cancellations will be posted on MeetUp and Calagater 3 hours before event time. We will not have the event in ice, or snowy conditions.</p> <p>Percipio Consulting Group is opening up their offices to host this event.</p> <p>Percipio is a business consulting firm that helps companies identify opportunities for improvement and successfully implement meaningful changes. That means more efficient processes, shored-up controls, a technology solution that really works for you, or all of the above. They have helped many companies, both Fortune 500 and mid-sized, navigate complex projects by truly understanding business needs and defining up front what success will look like.</p> <p>Events are made possible by the AgilePDX community and our sponsors, including platinum sponsor ProFocus Technology: https://www.profocustechnology.com/. As far as the mechanics, here's the format we'll follow:</p> <p>Step 1: Everybody writes down proposed topics on stickies, placing them in the center of the table. Take as much time as needed, but typically takes only 3-5 minutes (or whenever coffee is ready).</p> <p>Step 2: Each topic is briefly described by its writer to get a flavor for the subject (15-30 seconds typically per sticky).</p> <p>Step 3: Each person gets five votes which they indicate by marking the voted-for sticky with their Sharpie. Mark with a plus + if you agree with the topic and want to discuss it, or a minus - if you disagree and want to discuss it, mark it with a dot if you want to hear the discussion and maybe join in. You can put all votes on one, one across many, however you feel. Each mark counts as one vote.</p> <p>Step 4: The top vote-getting stickies are placed in the ToDo column, ordered by the stickies with the most votes at the top. In an Agile fashion, we'll use groupings of ToDo, Doing, Done and Lessons learned.</p> <p>Step 5: Each of these stickies are discussed for 5 minutes, most votes first. The facilitator takes a quick "Cesar" (thumbs up/down) vote at the five-minute timer, and she moves on for three more minutes if the discussion still has majority interest. When complete, move the sticky over to the Done column. Rinse and repeat.</p> <p>Step 6: wrap-up thoughts at the end - what one idea or person did you most enjoy, then break for home/drinks/cover.</p> **Please RSVP on our Meetup page to reserve your spot: ** https://www.meetup.com/AgilePDX-User-Group-Portland-Metro/events/tjcbbryzjbvb/ **If you are unable to attend, please update your RSVP to open your seat for another attendee.** <p>Join us for coffee/tea or beverage of your choice and fun discussions about how to overcome challenges we face or to share about Agile-inspired and other topics we agree or disagree with. The facilitator takes a quick "Cesar" (thumbs up/down) vote at the five-minute timer, and she moves on for three more minutes if the discussion still has majority interest. When complete, move the sticky over to the Done column. Rinse and repeat.</p> <p>Step 6: wrap-up thoughts at the end - what one idea or person did you most enjoy, then break for home/drinks/cover.</p>
