This class is an introduction to programming concepts with Python, an easy-to-learn programming language. Every class begins with the basics of what Python is and how to use it. After that we'll talk about computer science theory in an approachable way. Finally we'll have a lab where your questions can get answered and you can show off your projects.
No prior programming experience required. If you can type, you can program!

PDXWIT Presents: West Side Mixer

Many of us live and/or work on the west side of the metro area but may not have a convenient professional community nearby. Thanks to PDXWIT and DAT’s support, we can get together to talk tech and other work topics. The event will be primarily networking focused, but we will have a couple guest speakers:
A representative from DAT will share information about the company, including any opportunities that are available.
Guest speaker, Jenessa Stieglitz, Product Owner at Nike, will talk about Shine Theory: a practice of mutual investment with the simple premise that "I don't shine if you don't shine." It's a term to describe a commitment to collaborating with rather than competing against other people—especially other women.
We will also have a job seekers section where attendees can learn about the various employment opportunities available right now.

A: We have a gender-neutral restroom in our lobby and gendered restrooms closer to the space we'll be using for the event.

Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome. |

This month:
* Writing a web-based Python debugger by Bernard Sanders
Debuggers can be tricky to use for new developers. Could we lower the barrier to entry by providing a more graphical debugger in a web UI? In this talk, I'll show the first version of the WUI debugger I added to my company's product, discuss how I built it, and some of the interesting things I learned on the way.
Bernard is co-founder and CTO of CloudBolt software, which produces the leading hybrid cloud management platform. Bernard crafts the vision for the CloudBolt product and is an advocate for shared DevOps practices and enablement of hybrid cloud. Prior to CloudBolt, he worked on automating operations for more than 75 enterprise IT shops over 18 years in myriad roles at JPL, Loudcloud, Opsware, and HP. He holds patents for bare metal provisioning, Cloud Resource Orchestration, and Self-Service IT Catalog. Bernard lives in Portland, OR where he enjoys cross country skiing, being a Big Brother in BBBS, and volunteering with Puzzled Pint.

Many of us live and/or work on the west side of the metro area but may not have a convenient professional community nearby. Thanks to PDXWIT and DAT’s support, we can get together to talk tech and other work topics. The event will be primarily networking focused, but we will have a couple guest speakers:
A representative from DAT will share information about the company, including any opportunities that are available.
Guest speaker, Jenessa Stieglitz, Product Owner at Nike, will talk about Shine Theory: a practice of mutual investment with the simple premise that "I don't shine if you don't shine." It's a term to describe a commitment to collaborating with rather than competing against other people—especially other women.
We will also have a job seekers section where attendees can learn about the various employment opportunities available right now.

Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms?
A: We have a gender-neutral restroom in our lobby and gendered restrooms closer to the space we'll be using for the event.

A: Yes.

A: We have onsite parking.
Q: Is there any special information that might help me find the entrance?
A: We will be using our main entrance (corner of Hall & Nimbus); the other doors to the building are controlled access.

A: We have bicycle lockers in the rear of the building (users will need to bring their own lock).
Q: Should I consider using public transportation?
A: Our office is .3 miles (5 minute walk) from the Hall/Nimbus WES station, and serviced by the 76 & 78 TriMet bus routes. It's an option!
Q: Can I bring my dog?
A: No, we ask that you leave your furry friend home. No pets (only service animals).
Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.

The Puppet community has a lot of people with exciting Open Source tricks up their sleeves. Are you interested in what they're hacking on or want to share what you're hacking on?
An even bigger question…. Will you be in PDX for OSCON and want to come have a good time?
Puppet is hosting a Science Fair party in our Portland home office the evening of July 17, 2019. Come have a drink and poke at some new toys; see what fun projects people are working on. We’ve got an Internet-enabled train layout, and will let you control the office Spotify playlist with Bolt, our orchestration tool. What does all this even mean? Come hang out and see!
We'll have a few stations set up for you to explore and get your hands dirty with our Open Source projects. We'll have people sharing their own home DIY projects. And we'll have table spots for community members to showcase their own projects. Do you have something shiny to share?
Maybe most importantly, finger food, beer, and non-alcoholic refreshments will be provided. Come chill with us. We'd love to see you and hear what exciting things you've got going on.

Design is everywhere. From the clothes you’re wearing to the smartphone you’re holding, everything is designed. Design is crucial to just about everything—it renders the latest technology accessible to the masses, makes our favorite apps and products a pleasure to use, and determines which brands we return to over and over again. To put it simply, design matters. Join us in a fun-filled, hands-on evening experiencing the power of human-centered design. Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms?
A: Yes.
Q: Is the space ADA accessible?
A: Yes. ADA access is through a ground floor elevator. Take an elevator to the 9th floor (press '9' outside the elevators and use the indicated cab). Follow signs to the Cayuse lobby.
Q: Will there be food and drink at this event?
A: Yes, there will be light food and beverages.
Q: What is the parking situation?
A: We do have a garage that's under building 2. The garage address for GPS is 56 SW Taylor Portland, Oregon 97204. The entrance is off Taylor between Naito and 1st. From the garage you'll go up the elevators to the bridge level (B) and walk over the bridge into building 1's lobby (east).We can validate parking for up to 2 hours with a stamp.
Q: Is there any special information that might help me find the entrance?
A: We are located at World Trade Center Portland, Building 1, at 121 SW Salmon Suite 900, Portland, Oregon 97204. The lobby to building 1 is up escalators (SW corner of 2nd and Salmon) on the 2nd floor. See ADA access question above for details on elevator access. A representative from Cayuse will be here to make sure you can get into our space.
Q: Is there secured bike parking?
A: There are bike racks located in the parking garage that you can access without a badge (our bike hub is a bike cage with badge access only) and there are racks around the World Trade Center Campus.
Q: Should I consider using public transportation?
A: Yes, and MAX and bus stops are close by.
Q: Can I bring my dog?
A: No, we ask that you leave your furry friend home however per federal ADA law service animals are welcome for those with disabilities.

Rayon is a Rust crate for writing parallel computations beautifully and safely. If you've got a computation written as an iteration, just change `.into_iter()` to `.into_par_iter()`, and Rayon will take care of distributing and balancing the load across your machine's processors automatically. But wait! There's more! Rayon covers other patterns of parallel computation as well.

What are the best current practices for building modern, completely standards-based (OIDC) web applications? Which flow should you use? How should you renew expired access tokens? How do you work with multiple resource servers? How do you achieve single-sign on? How can you make logging into your app as seamless as possible? We will demonstrate how simple it is to do all of this using open source libraries maintained by ForgeRock. Together we will deep dive into what these libraries are doing for you behind the scenes: PKCE, service workers, IndexedDB storage, hidden iframes, and more. In the end you will have all the tools at your disposal to easily build your next modern web app with OIDC.

Join us for happy hour at Zapproved on August 20th.
Calling all introverts!
We all know the tech industry is full of networking events, but networking can be daunting, especially for introverts. The theme of our August Happy Hour is “Calling All Introverts!” To get people talking about this, our conversation prompt for the event will be “How does being an introvert or extrovert affect networking for you?”
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 p.m. to share important announcements and showcase three members of our community.
A representative from our host company Zapproved will share what they do and what job opportunities are available at the company
Tula Sabes, Lab Support Technician at Intel, will talk about Inclusion and Being a Young Introvert
Emma Holland, Program Manager at Thinkful, will talk about Networking for Introverts
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.

Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms?
A: Yes, we have all gender restrooms.
Q: Is the space ADA accessible?
A: Yes, we are ADA compliant.
Q: Will there be food and drink at this event?
A: Yes, we will have food provided and can offer gluten free and vegan options.
Q: What is the parking situation?
A: No, we do not have on-site parking. There is usually plentiful street parking.
Q: Is there any special information that might help me find the entrance?
A: We have a main door and an elevator that lock at specific times. We will request that they remain open for the event.
Q: Is there secured bike parking?
A: We have a bike room on our floor for approximately 10 bikes; if this gets full the building has parking on the 3rd floor. This is indoor parking with lockers. When parking here it is like parking on the street. There is not someone monitoring this area.
Q: Should I consider using public transportation?
A: There is a trolley that comes past our building, but it's by no means necessary.
Q: Can I bring my dog?
A: No, we ask that you leave your furry friend home.
Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome. |

Funding continues to lag for women entrepreneurs in Biotechnology. As the largest women-owned intellectual property IP firm in the US, McCoy Russell LLP has been closely watching the participation of women as inventors. The ability to protect innovation through patents is a key driver to obtaining funding, and statistics show that a significant gender gap still exists in both funding and inventorship even though the biotechnology industry has increased the number of women scientists.
The average women inventorship rate in the US is approximately 13% with Oregon ranking in the bottom one-third of US states. In the last decade, only 20% of inventors on patents assigned to universities and hospitals and only 15% of inventors on patents granted to public research organizations were women. In addition, even when these applications are filed, data shows that USPTO examiners treat women inventors more harshly. A Yale study shows that women inventors had an 8.2% lower chance of obtaining a US patent where the names were clearly indicative of gender.
While funding opportunities also remain scarce (45% less funding per Boston Consulting Group), investors supporting women entrepreneurs have found a higher average ROI (10% higher).
It is in this light that McCoy Russell has developed approaches to support organizations in enhancing women participation at all levels, including in brainstorming, invention submission, etc. Because diversity leads to increased innovation, organizations can received significant valuation benefits in their portfolios. |

Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers.
