SAOpdx: Software-Cluster Roundtable with PDC (Session 4)
Roll back
description |

→ |
Please join us at software Industry Roundtable discussion! As a leader in the software industry, your perspective on Portlandâs strengths and challenges, specifically for this industry, are of critical interest to the city of Portland and its partners as we begin the implementation of the cityâs newly-adopted Economic Development Strategy.
The Strategy, which was approved by City Council in July 2009, emphasizes job creation and business competitiveness as the path to a sustainable economy, and identifies four industry clusters where the Portland Development Commission (PDC) will concentrate time, talent and resources to meet the Strategyâs goal of 10,000 net new jobs in the city of Portland in the next five years.
We are in the process of gathering intelligence on Portlandâs software sector and trying to identify opportunities for growing the cluster. The PDC and the Software Association of Oregon (SAO) are collaborating on a series of software industry round tables to help guide the development of this important industry cluster. Your participation in one of these discussions would be invaluable in advancing the understanding of industry needs. |

Multidimensional Thinking: Making the leap from SQL to MDX
Paul Turley
Use SQL Server Analysis Services to enable leaders to understand their business at a deeper level, and with much less effort. With Multidimensional Expressions (MDX) and cubes, you can easily design simple queries and reports to provide business insight that would be complex and inefficient in SQL. It’s easier than you think. We will quickly design a cube from the ground-up and then do a side-by-side comparison of common and useful SQL and MDX queries that produce similar results. You will learn to appreciate the power of the cube and this simple and elegant query language.
Paul is a Manager of Specialized Services / BI Solution Architect for Hitachi Consulting. He is part of Hitachi's national Business Intelligence and Process Management team and works from HItachi's regional office in Portland, Oregon.
Paul has been architecting, managing and developing applications and business intelligence solutions for large and small businesses since 1992. He has developed custom database, BI and reporting solutions for many companies including Microsoft, Nike, Disney, Hewlett-Packard and Boeing. His expertise includes project lifecycle management, database modeling and design using SQL Server versions 6.0 through 2008, application development and user interface design using ASP.NET, and enterprise BI solutions using SQL Server Reporting Services, Integration Services and Analysis Services. He teaches, develops training courseware, speaks at industry conferences and has authored and co-authored several technical books. He has presented at the Professional Association for SQL Server (PASS) global summit since 2004.
He is an MSDN forum moderator for SQL Server Reporting Services and a SQL Server MVP. He has been a Microsoft Certified Solution Developer (MCSD) since 1996 and maintains certifications in software architecture and development, database administration (MCDBA) and project management methodologies (MSF & IT Project+.) He holds the current MCTS and MCITP certifications for SQL Server BI.

Roll back
description |

Bucardo is a mature replication system written in Perl for PostgreSQL that supports asynchronous replication for both master-slave and multi-master systems. Originally designed for slow and unreliable networks, it has remarkable recovery ability, an easy to use command-line interface and development is active! Uses for Bucardo include: a slave read-only database, multi-master replication, data warehousing and just having fun moving your data around! Will include overview replication for PostgreSQL in general, a tour of features, and a basic configuration walk through.

Let’s face it, it’s been a tough year. With lay-offs, re-orgs and struggling morale, our HR teams are feeling overworked and under-appreciated. Please join us for an uplifting evening with a true practitioner in partnering with HR. Before dinner, Paul Gulick will discuss several experiences, from his lengthy career, during which he partnered with HR to maintain a sense of teamwork and company culture during tough times.
In addition to hearing from Paul, we will share stories of partnering with the executive team “in the trenches” during tough times. Please come prepared to share and to be inspired by others.
About Paul Gulick
Paul E. Gulick has been an active and successful entrepreneur in the Portland, Oregon, area throughout his career. Most recently, Paul served as Chief Technology Officer at Planar Systems, Inc., a global leader in specialty display systems. He joined Planar following the acquisition of Clarity Visual Systems. Prior to founding Clarity, Paul was a co-founder of InFocus Corporation. Paul has partnered with HR during several occasions including strategic planning in a downturn, an acquisition and a company sale.
