create Calagator::Event 1250458205 Startup Law 101: When does a startup need to call a lawyer? Roll back

description nil Sledgehammer: When does a startup need to call a lawyer? And when can a startup get by without one? The members of PIE invite you to join them for a great session on understanding better when and when you don't need a lawyer. We have invited one of the tech startup industry's best law firms to come and talk to the entreprenuers in Portland's startup scene. Neil Nathanson from the Portland office of the leading startup law firm Perkins Coie, will talk about the critical points in a startup's lifecycle where having your own legal sledgehammer is essential. Also joining him will be Jeff Bock, addressing licensing and intellectual property issues and Neil addressing corporate and finance issues. He will also cover what sort of services and counsel you can expect from a law firm and then be open for a Q&A session. The event will start at 6pm, but the doors will open around 5:30 with pizza available. There is no fee to attend - but please only register if you intend to come so we can have enough food. update Calagator::Event 1250458153 PDXScala Meeting Roll back

description Join us for the next meeting of PDXScala, the Portland Scala users group. We'll be discussing various testing frameworks as used under Scala and breaking out into groups to evaluate them and share notes. We've got a fun meeting coming up this Thursday. The plan is to break into small groups to evaluate various testing frameworks (Sepcs, ScalaTest, JUnit, etc.) and then discuss our findings as a group. Trenton has graciously set up a GitHub repository with some basic classes to test against and a set of JUnit tests to get started with. It's currently set up with Maven and has the beginnings of an SBT project set up. I'm still working on getting SBT to run the JUnit tests Trenton wrote, but otherwise feel free to clone it and get familiar with it before the meeting: http://github.com/trenton/TestOfTests There should also be time to discuss other concerns, ask questions, and the usual sorts of things you might want to do in a group of like-minded techies. If you have ideas for other short discussions you'd like to propose for this meeting or a future meeting, please send them along.

create Calagator::Event 1250458195 Mobile Portland: Augmented Reality Roll back

description nil Imagine being able to use your phone to see what that IKEA couch you've been considering will look like in your living room. A far-fetched science fiction scenario? No, IKEA has already released an application like that in Europe. Augmented reality is an exciting and emerging technology. Augmented reality take real life information--typically the video display of a phone--and overlays it with computer information. Augmented reality is something that is completely unique to mobile. This month at Mobile Portland, we're lucky to have two speakers who are early innovators in augmented reality. P. Mark Anderson is platform architect for Spot Metrix which provides an augmented reality library for iPhone called 3DAR. Tim Sears created Robotvision, one of the first augmented reality applications for iPhone. Mark and Tim will share how people are using augmented reality, their experiences using augmented reality, and what the future holds for this new technology. <b>About the Speakers</b> <b>P. Mark Anderson</b> P. Mark Anderson has 13 years experience developing interactive applications. After receiving a degree in Computer Science from University of Colorado in 1999 he started his career as a developer for Sun Microsystems. In addition to creating several iPhone applications, Mr. Anderson moderates the Helpful iPhone Utilities open source project, as well as My Maps, an augmented reality iPhone app built on top of Google's personalized mapping system. Mr. Anderson is platform architect for the 3DAR augmented reality SDK. He enjoys working with both artists and developers, and occupies his spare time with watercolor painting, mountain biking, disc golf and mentoring. <b>Tim Sears</b> Tim Sears is a software engineer who works for PR firm Waggener Edstrom by day building web applications, by night creating location-based augmented reality experiences for the iPhone. He created Robotvision, a popular augmented reality browser, for the iPhone in 2009 and currently works with clients to build out mobile geolocation experiences in augmented reality. His work in augmented reality and social media analytics has been featured in major publications such as ReadWriteWeb, TechCrunch and CNET, and has won several awards, including the International Business Awards Best New Product/Service of 2009 for twendz, a real-time Twitter sentiment analysis application.

update Calagator::Event 1250458089 XPDX: Turning Bad Situations Around Roll back

description We'll have a discussion on one of the people issues associated with agile software development: how do you turn a bad situation around? Just as legacy code is a set of problems that take special techniques to overcome, legacy interpersonal interactions are too. I'm pretty sure that unit tests aren't the answer for most interpersonal problems, either. :) More seriously, it's pretty common to join a company or team with existing trust and communication (and yes, tech) issues. Come share ways of turning those into successes. Pizza and networking at 6:30pm, 7pm talk, beer afterwards. description nil This month's topic: TBD ---------- PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :) Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up! Many people also go for a drink and further discussion following the meeting, at a location determined ad hoc (lately, the Market Street Pub at 10th and Market: http://mcmenamins.com/index.php?loc=24 ). http://twitter.com/pjug http://pjug.org/ (join our mailing list, linked from the website!)
