update Calagator::Event 1250459521 Agile PDX presents "Bloody Stupid Johnson Teaches Agile" Roll back

description For our December Agile PDX evening meeting, James Shore and Arlo Belshee will be reprising their immensely popular Agile 2010 presentation, "Bloody Stupid Johnson Teaches Agile." What is it? Almost impossible to explain! It's a farce and a parody of all things Agile. You have to see it for yourself! The abstract: This fun and energetic session features "Bloody Stupid" Johnson and his nemesis The Jester facing off to architect the Perfect Agile Process (PAP). On their journey, they will get just about everything wrong. Come learn what not to do and have a good time doing it. This session received the highest ratings of the conference--actually, the highest two ratings of the conference, because they were invited to present a special encore session. (It was the only session that was invited to repeat.) This event is free. It begins at 6:30 pm with pizza, sponsored by PNSQC (many thanks!). You will need to check in with security, so please arrive early. The program starts at 7:00 pm. Rich Claussen provided this custom map 'pin' http://www.bing.com/maps/explore/?org=aj#/fotw1o04svrqm3xg After the program you're invited to join us for a no-host gathering at a nearby brewpub for further discussion. For those who are curious, after the conference Dave Nicolette wrote a review of Jim and Arlo's session. update Calagator::Event 1250459515 Beyond Acceptance Testing Roll back

description December 9th Rose City SPIN Seminar Announcement: Beyond Acceptance Testing Presented by BJ Clark Dates/Times: Thursday, December 9th, 2010; Networking @ 6:00 PM; Seminar 7:00-8:00 PM Location: HF3 Auditorium, Intel Hawthorne Farms 3 (HF3) Campus, 5200 NE Elam Young Pkwy, Hillsboro, OR 97124 - View Map Directions: From Cornell, head South on NE Elam Young Pkwy (near Costco). Take the first left to turn into the Intel parking lot. The HF3 campus will be directly in front of you. Parking is available on both sides of the building. Note that there are two NE Elam Young Pkwy streets that connect to Cornell. Use the west one, closest to Brookwood and Costco. Abstract Fit, Fitness, and Cucumber have revolutionized development and brought the idea of acceptance-level testing and "Outside-in-development" to a whole community of developers, testers and product owners. But can we take the idea of acceptance testing to another level and test things other than the "correctness" of our software? What if we could also specify and test the quality of interaction in our applications? What if we could involve a whole other community of people, interaction designers and user experience professionals, in not just the ideation of our products, but the actual execution of the software itself? In beyond acceptance testing, we'll look into who could be writing acceptance tests and all the things that we could be testing that most of us currently aren't doing. Speaker Bio BJ Clark is a SE Portland based designer, "extreme programmer", and user experience professional. He works for Goldstar Events (goldstar.com) running skunk-works projects and working on the overall user experience. He has more than 10 years experience developing e-commerce platforms and working for numerous venture funded startups. You can read his blog at http://bjclark.me. He received his formal education in Fine Art and when not in front of a computer, likes to make furniture and wood-fired ceramics. A Special Treat from PNSQC Plan on coming early! In collaboration with the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference (PNSQC) the SPIN meeting will have pizza and pop provided by PNSQC beginning at 6:00 pm. PNSQC is the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference, a group of volunteers interested in Software Quality. The Mission of the PNSQC is to enable knowledge exchange to produce higher quality software. As a non-profit, it seeks to promote software quality by providing education and opportunities for information exchange within the software community. update Calagator::Event 1250459495 PDX Web: Lightning Talks! Roll back

description We're going to try something a little different for the holidays, at a different time and different location, so make a note! Rather than a specific topic with one speaker, we're going to do some lightning talks. In a nutshell, ANYONE can stand up and do a short 5 minute presentation about any topic they wish (preferably relevant to our group, but if you really want to talk about your cats...). Every speaker will be given be 5 minutes (by clock) with a 1 minute warning before the end. Slides are allowed, but not required. Props are welcome! Here's some ideas: * Projects you're working on * A new toolkit you're excited about * A new methodology you've developed * Books/Websites you highly recommend * A public rant/praise about our group * Hassles of writing books (hint, Dave... hint...) * Anything, really if you've never done a lightning talk, here's a good thing to read: http://selenadelesie.com/2010/06/30/try-a-lightning-talk/ Please post/email your topic if you plan to present. We may be able to fit in 12-15 in a reasonable time. We're meeting across the river at "Abstract Machines", off Ladd's Rose Gardens Circle and Squares. This won't be hard to get into - and a little more of a party atmosphere than our normal structure. Food and drinks are welcome/encouraged. update Calagator::Event 1250459504 Personal Telco Project Birthday and New Node Work Party Roll back

description Come celebrate Personal Telco's 10th birthday, but plugging in another node! http://www.personaltelco.net/~russell/the-beginning.txt Ten years ago to the day, Adam Shand, inspired by a slashdot article on Consume.net in London, wrote a message to the Portland Linux Users Group mailing list. That message got Personal Telco off the ground, and it's been flying (sometimes eating some pine cones) ever since. Come help it gain some more altitude and soar with you into the future! We'll be plugging in a new rooftop node out in the depths of Beaverton at about 12 noon tomorrow. It shouldn't take too long, so don't be too late or we'll be all done when you get there. Where: 16475 SW Cynthia Street, Beaverton OR 97007 When: Noon, Sunday, November 28, 2010 until 1 or 2pm We are going to be attaching another of the Ubiquiti Bullet M2HP's toUbiquiti Bullet M2HP's to a 5 foot mast on the roof, attached to a WgtCab inside. Come join the fun, watch, learn, participate! Ask not what free wifi can do for you, ask what you can do for free wifi! create Calagator::Event 1250459509 Portland Linux/Unix Group: Open Source Desktop Publishing with Scribus Roll back

description nil Presentation Open Source Desktop Publishing with Scribus by John Jason Jordan Scribus is just a few years old, but has already achieved most of the features of the expensive commercial desktop publishing apps, and a few they don't have. If you need to do fliers, brochures, or whole books, Scribus is now the preferred tool. The presentation will start with a brief introduction to some of the terms of desktop publishing, especially how to get your computer to produce something that a print shop can put on a press. This will include matters such as typography, color management, banding and line screens, transparency, imposition, and several other issues. Then we will spend a few minutes on an overview of Scribus, how it is different from word processors, TeX, and advantages and disadvantages. This will include the basic features of Scribus, including typographical controls, master pages, render frames, PDF forms, PDF export options, scripting, collect for output, and lots more. It will also cover how Scribus is the end tool in a process that starts with other programs. Finally we will reproduce the PLUG flier that was created in Scribus. This will be presented on the screen showing the steps and features of Scribus necessary to produce it. Each member of the audience will have a paper copy of the flier to assist in following the process.
