Location-based Apps with Amber Case and Aaron Parecki
Roll back
description |
Amber Case and her partner Aaron Parecki are the founders of GeoLoqi. GeoLoqi is a private, real-time mobile and web platform for secure location data, with features such as Geonotes, proximal notification, and sharing real-time GPS maps with friends. Geoloqi has been covered in the Willamette Week and Oregon Business. It has been presented at eComm, Open Source Bridge, Show and Tell PDX and Research Club under the alias Non-Visual Augmented Reality with SMS and GPS.
What will you learn:
*Why developers of apps should look at what users want to do now, as well as what users want to do in their future.
*Why social apps should try to mirror realâworld relationships
*Why sharing should be about who you share with as well as how long you want the information to be available.
*Why developers should think about making apps "ambientâ and require less user interaction. |

PDX TechCoffee
Roll back
description |
Season 3, episode 10
Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!
TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on freenode. One commit a week is all we ask.

Season 3, episode 9
Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!
TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on freenode. One commit a week is all we ask.

OEN Workshop: What's your company worth? Everything you need to know about company valuation
Roll back
description |
As an early stage entrepreneur looking for the first round of funding, one of the most daunting tasks may be determining the valuation of your company. In this workshop, we will cover the basics of valuing a seed or launch stage company, and answer some questions, such as:
Who sets the valuation - the company or the investor?
What does pre-money and post-money valuation mean? How do I calculate it?
How do I value my company if we donât yet have revenues?
How do investors determine the valuation?
How have valuations changed in the economic downturn?
We'll explain the terminology, demystify the math and explain some of the ways that valuation is set during the funding process. There will be plenty of time for Q&A, so come armed with your questions and be ready to participate in a lively discussion about valuing early stage companies.
$30 for OEN Members; $70 for non-members.
Speaker: Naomi Derner
Naomi Derner, CFA is the founder and managing director of Derner Valuation Consulting. Prior to 2008, she was a Vice President in the San Francisco office of Houlihan Lokey Howard and Zukin. Exciting Strengths: Transform Situations from the Inside Out
Roll back
description |

The New Communicators is a three-day series of events exploring the ways we communicate with each other. It is an open forum for discussion, education and inspiration, free of charge. * * * In 2007 Alex Linsker walked up to strangers in New York City’s Union Square Park and said, “I’ll give you $5 if in five minutes or less we can’t figure out what to do about an upcoming situation you aren’t looking forward to.” It didn’t cost him too much to develop a set of questions. As a radio interviewer summarized, “Exciting Strengths that you find in one area of your life can then be extrapolated to all areas of life, and we can use them in really any project or goal we’ve created.”
In this workshop, we’ll apply strengths to what’s important to you at work or in life. We will walk through exercises, practice asking the questions and grow the way we think.
Join us on Thursday to explore your exciting strengths and take home a new approach to dealing with challenges and situations that cause anxiety.

PDX Lean Startup - True Ventures' Puneet Agarwal - An Early Stage VC's Perspective
Roll back
description |
|
→ |
Puneet Agarwal of True Ventures (investor in Portland's Urban Airship and Puppet Labs) will come to talk to us about his perspective on Lean Startups.
He'll talk about:
* Whether or not True Ventures looks for Lean Startup Principles in prospective portfolio companies
* How True Ventures advises it's portfolio companies - how Lean Startup techniques fit
* The transition from "Lean to Fat" - getting from Lean Startup to Big Company
Agenda
6:00 - 6:30 - Meet and Greet
6:30 - 8:00 - Puneet Talk and Discussion
About Puneet
Puneet brings a strong mix of operating and Venture Capital experience to the True team.
Prior to joining True, Puneet was the VP of Product Management at Geodesic Information Systems, which specializes in mobile and Internet communication products selling to consumers, OEMs, carriers, and online properties. There he helped grow the company from $20M to over $80M in revenue in two years and learned valuable lessons about building a successful team in times of rapid growth. As part of his experience with Geodesic, Puneet lived and worked in India for seven months before settling back in their West Coast offices.
Prior to Geodesic, Puneet spent four years at BEA Systems in a number of roles. Puneet ran product marketing for BEA’s JRockit product, traveled the world evangelizing BEA’s platform to CIOs and developers, and also conceived, initiated, and ran product management and marketing for BEA’s RFID initiative.
Puneet began his career at an early stage integration software startup, Crossworlds Software, which was later sold to IBM. He then spent some time in the investment world in corporate finance and M&A in J.P. Morgan’s tech practice where he worked on several technology IPOs and acquisitions. Puneet also spent two years in Venture Capital at the Mayfield Fund helping to invest in early stage software deals. Puneet joined during the height of the bubble and endured during the downturn as well. It was during this latter period when he helped to lead Mayfield’s investment in Trigo, an early enterprise software company, which was later sold to IBM.
At True, Puneet focuses on infrastructure and software applications specifically around cloud computing, open source, SaaS, and mobile. He currently sits on the board of LoopFuse. |
