Free Wireless w/ randomly placed plugs
We kept the elevator!

What is BarCamp?
BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from participants. You never quite know what to expect at BarCamp. When you arrive on Friday, there will be an agenda framework (times / rooms), but the content for the sessions will be decided by the participants. |

PRESENTATION
An Overview of
Berkley DB
by
David Segleau
Director Product Management - Berkeley DB
Berkeley DB originated at the University of California,
Berkeley as part of the transition (1986 to 1994) from 4.3BSD
to 4.4BSD and of the effort to remove AT&T-encumbered code.
It has evolved a great deal since then and is now part
of Oracle where it is distributed with source code under
a dual use license.
Berkeley DB (BDB) is a computer software library that provides
a high-performance embedded database, with bindings in C, C++,
PHP, Java, Perl, Python, Ruby, Tcl, Smalltalk, and other languages.
BDB stores arbitrary key/data pairs as byte arrays, and supports
multiple data items for a single key. BDB can support thousands
of simultaneous threads of control or concurrent processes
manipulating databases as large as 256 terabytes, on a wide
variety of operating systems including most Unix-like and
Windows systems, and real-time operating systems. |

Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!
TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on freenode. One commit a week is all we ask.

IEEE Workshop on The Smart Grid - from Appliance to Generator and Back
Roll back
description |
<h2>IEEE Workshop on The Smart Grid - from Appliance to Generator and Back</h2>
Sponsors: IEEE Region 6 and Oregon Section
Co-Sponsored by Oregon Power and Energy and Computer Society Chapters
<b>Date: September 8, 2010</b>
Venue: Ambridge Event Center, Portland, Oregon; see <a href="http://www.ambridgeevents.com/">"www.ambridgeevents.com"</a>
<b>An IEEE Oregon âSmart Grid Weekâ (September 8-10) event</b>
<b>READ <a href="http://bit.ly/bQYhzE">"FULL PROGRAM DESCRIPTION PDF"</a></b>
A one day workshop with reception of how the Smart Grid provides interactions between the end uses of electricity ("appliances" or industrial processes) and utilities, viewed from the perspective of the technologies, standards, and policies that will enable those interactions and foster innovation and interoperability.
The Smart Grid marries the electrical grid, an extremely complex system based on mature, conservative technology, with two fast moving innovative technologies, computers and communications. It is one of the greatest electrical, electronic and information processing challenges of our time and represents a significant engineering opportunity over the next two decades and beyond. It captures information about supply, system demand, individual usage, and pricing that fundamentally shifts how electricity is used. It enables the operators of the power system to increase efficiency and reliability while reducing costs and empowering consumers of electricity to minimize their own electricity costs.
<b>Learning Objectives:</b>
Attendees will gain an understanding of the monitoring, communications, security and control systems of the Smart Grid, how they interact, the flow of data and control, and design and implementation considerations including:
</ul><li>Information requirements for optimal control of generating capacity, regional transmission grids, and municipal distribution grids to meet end user demands.</li>
<li>How generation, transmission and distribution control systems utilize digital information.</li>
<li>How suppliers and distributors of electricity use information to minimize costs while increasing reliability, flexibility, and security.</li>
<li>How usage monitoring and automation will allow end users to make informed decisions that reduce their electricity costs.</li>
<li>How to ensure grid security.</li>
<li>Balancing optimization of the gridâs subsystems and the grid as a whole.</li></ul>
<b>Target Audience:</b>
The target audience is engineers, policy makers, and entrepreneurs who want to understand the Smart Grid in order to make better professional, technical and business decisions.
<b>Prerequisites:</b>
Attendees should be generally familiar with the electric power system, software, or data communications concepts; a power engineering background is not required.
<b>Registration:</b>
<a href="http://www.regonline.com/ieee_smart_grid_workshop2010">"Register online here"</a>. Seats are limited.

OEN CEO Roundtable with Frank Helle: Business Models
Roll back
description |
309 SW Sixth Avenue
(Ironstone Bank Conference Room)
Portland, OR 97204-
Frank Helle, CEO of Axian, Inc., will lead an interactive discussion that will help entrepreneurs gain some insightful perspectives on Business Models. Come share your challenges, observations and successes with other CEOs of emerging businesses.
We all talk about business models but do we really understand what they are? In this session of the OEN CEO Roundtable, the group will discuss the different types of business models and delve into understanding which type may be the best fit for your company. You will also receive a high-level recap of the discussion from Frank.
Open only to CEOs or Presidents of currently operating companies that have employees. Boxed lunch will be served. This program is limited to 12 participants, and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Speaker: Frank Helle, Axian, Inc. - www.axian.com
Frank Helle is CEO of Axian, Inc., a 20-year old privately-held web-services company creating collaboration portals and business intelligence (software & data). Prior to 2002 he was a senior global manager at Monsanto Company. During that career he lived in Brussels Belgium for 5 years managing manufacturing, engineering, and supply chain for Europe, Middle East, and Africa. He then lived in Singapore for 5 years as Asia-Pacific Managing Director for 3 Monsanto Divisions.
Frank's leadership helps organizations realize more of their full potential, and often focuses on turnarounds and turbo-charging growth.
Aside from positioning Axian to be "built to last," Frank mentors and coaches local CXOs to help them compete in the global marketplace and create more jobs in Oregon. Frank is an active Board Director of Oregon's Association for Corporate Growth as Chair Emeritus & Past-President, is an active Board Director of Oregonâs high tech trade association,Tech America, and is an active volunteer with the Oregon Entrepreneurs Network - chairing the CEO Roundtable.

Portland Retro Gaming Expo

description |

The Portland Retro Gaming Expo is an annual exhibition of classic video games and systems in Portland, Oregon. We aim to recognize the history of video game systems and their authors, manufacturers and players.
That said, the classic game collecting hobby is most closely associated with the Atari 2600/5200/7800, Nintendo NES and SNES systems, Sega Master System/Genesis, and other systems released in the 1980s and early 1990s. One can expect to see these systems as well as many lesser-known systems at the Retro Gaming Expo.
In addition to home systems, we have had a larger showing of full-size arcade games to play. |
