SAOpdx: Collaboration in Social Media featuring Richard Boly of the US Department of State
Roll back
description |
Presented by the Software Association of Oregon's Marketing + Sales Forum & Social Media Club PDX
You are invited to join us for an exceptional keynote presentation followed by a Q&A session with a full panel of local collaboration and social media experts.
Agenda
5:30pm Registration opens, networking
6:15pm Program begins (welcome)
6:20pm Keynote with Richard Boly
6:45pm Panel Q&A
7:30pm Program ends
KEYNOTE: Embracing Social Media at the U.S. State Department: If the Oldest Federal Agency Can, Why Canât You?
The State Department is the oldest executive agency in the United States. Cold war secrecy created a need-to-know culture that impeded unofficial information sharing. Stateâs diplomatic corps is selected for risk aversion and trained to obtain many clearances and authorizations before officially transmitting information internally.
Then the end of the Cold War was followed by the East Africa embassy bombings and 9/11. The paradigm shifted. The lack of information sharing and collaboration meant that puzzle pieces remain scattered and threats were unidentified. In this shift, the State Departmentâs office of eDiplomacy was born.
Come find out how State Department has embraced lightweight social media tools behind the firewall to move from a need-to-know culture to need-to-share one.
Meet Richard Boly, Director of eDiplomacy, US Department of State
Richard Boly is a career U.S. diplomat and currently the Director of the Office of eDiplomacy, an applied technology think tank for the United States Department of State. Previously, he was a National Security Affairs Fellow the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, where he launched the Global Entrepreneurship Program. He recently served in U.S. Embassy, Rome, where he developed and ran a program to promote entrepreneurship in Italy. Other embassy assignments include the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, and Paraguay. Richard is the most junior diplomat to win the Cobb Award for commercial diplomacy.
In a prior life, Richard was the first Presidential Management Fellow with the Inter-American Foundation, was a consultant with the Inter-American Development Bank, and founded and ran a shrimp hatchery in coastal Ecuador. He is a graduate of Stanford University and the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies at UCSD.
Q&A Session Panelists

SAOpdx: Remember the Milk: Location-based Apps with Amber Case and Aaron Parecki
Roll back
description |
Thereâs a message from your future and itâs telling you to remember to pick up milk.
Amber Case and her partner Aaron Parecki are the founders of GeoLoqi. GeoLoqi is a private, real-time mobile and web platform for secure location data, with features such as Geonotes, proximal notification, and sharing real-time GPS maps with friends. Geoloqi has been covered in the Willamette Week and Oregon Business. It has been presented at eComm, Open Source Bridge, Show and Tell PDX and Research Club under the alias Non-Visual Augmented Reality with SMS and GPS. Read CNN's article on GeoLogi, "What's Next for 'Check-in' Apps".
What will you learn:
1. Why developers of apps should look at what users want to do now, as well as what users want to do in their future.
2. Why social apps should try to mirror realâworld relationships
3. Why sharing should be about who you share with as well as how long you want the information to be available.
4. Why developers should think about making apps "ambientâ and require less user interaction.
Meet the Geeks
Aaron Parecki is a Portland-based PHP developer and GPS fanatic. His fascination with GPS began at the age of 6, when he began tracing the routes of family road trips on a map with a highlighter. This interest has grown into groundbreaking new methods of location sharing and data collection. Recently he co-founded a company, Quicksilver Real Estate Solutions, developing software for the real estate industry. You can learn more about Aaron at aaronparecki.com, and you can follow him on twitter at @aaronpk
Amber Case is a Cyborg Anthropologist and corporate consultant currently living in Portland, Oregon. She founded CyborgCamp, a conference on the future of humans and computers. She has spoken at various industry conferences including MITâs Futures of Entertainment and Inverge: The Interactive Convergence Conference. Sheâs also spoken at Ignite Portland and Ignite Boulder. She was previously a blogger for Discovery Channel and worked with Fortune 500 companies at Wieden+Kennedy, a global advertising agency based in Portland, Oregon. She has spoken at various industry conferences including MITâs Futures of Entertainment and Inverge: The Interactive Convergence Conference. Sheâs also spoken at Ignite Portland and Ignite Boulder. She presented an Introduction to Cyborg Anthropology at Portlandâs Webvisions 2009. She previously wrote for Discovery Channelâs Nerdabout.com and worked at Wieden+Kennedy, a global advertising agency based in Portland, Oregon.
Amber Case is known for her skills in online productivity, business strategy, and new communication methods. She is currently writing a book on applying anthropological techniques to better understand industry ecosystems. Amber was recently featured in Fast Company as one of their Most Influential Women in Technology. She is on twitter as @caseorganic.

The theme of the meeting is the new features of Xcode 4. Brandon, Rich and I will be dividing them up; if anyone else wants to join in, just let me know!
Everyone needs to be under the Apple NDA; the easiest way to do that is to sign up for the Mac or iOS developer program (the free registration is fine).
A general Q&A session will follow the presentations, and then we will adjourn for beer.
(Note, the entrance to BrainSilo is in the back of the building!) |

OEN Workshop: What's your company worth? Everything you need to know about company valuation
Roll back
description |
nil |

As an early stage entrepreneur looking for the first round of funding, one of the most daunting tasks may be determining the valuation of your company. In this workshop, we will cover the basics of valuing a seed or launch stage company, and answer some questions, such as:
• Who sets the valuation - the company or the investor?
• What does pre-money and post-money valuation mean? How do I calculate it?
• How do I value my company if we don’t yet have revenues?
• How do investors determine the valuation?
• How have valuations changed in the economic downturn?
We'll explain the terminology, demystify the math and explain some of the ways that valuation is set during the funding process. There will be plenty of time for Q&A, so come armed with your questions and be ready to participate in a lively discussion about valuing early stage companies.
OEN Member Registration: $30.00

A polyglot programming group meeting in the heart of The Beave. We seem to talk a lot about oddball programming languages and their features. And the usual geekery you'd expect from a programmer's group.
We're out on the west side but all are welcome.
This month there's a high probability of a talk on the R programming language.

IDSA Oregon presents: 3BY10 - A chance to see what creative professionals and design students in Portland are up to, ten minutes at a time.
Doors at 6pm, and it's all wrapped up by 7pm.
This month's speakers:
Recent RISD grad Kevin Quale gives a quick overview of The Useful Object Series: a studio project that creates a collection of products carefully designed to have no specific function, leaving the user to invent a use.
Local IDSA organizer and Ziba writer Carl Alviani gives a quick summary of the recent IDSA 2010 International Conference, focusing on the impact of DIY on professional design. Plenty of photos, observations and coverage from the first such event to be hosted in Portland.
Third speaker TBA.
Happy hour to follow at Someday Lounge - 125 Northwest 5th Avenue btw Couch and Davis |
