update Calagator::Event 1250459287 IEEE Oregon - Cognitive Networks/Dynamic Spectrum Access in Wireless Networks Roll back

description
Distinguished IEEE Speaker: Zhensheng Zhang of Argon ST (formerly SDRC)

Date: Thursday, November 4, 2010
Time: 6:00-8:00 PM

Place: Tektronix Conference Center (Bldg 38), 3025 SW Zworykin Ave, Beaverton, OR 97005 Agenda: 6:00 PM – Social 7:00 PM - Speaker In this talk, we present a high level overview on the recent development of the cognitive radios/dynamical spectrum access (DSA) techniques, focusing on the following areas: characteristics of the available bandwidth of the primary users, sensing technologies and sensing intervals to detect white spaces, spectrum allocation schemes (graph coloring, game theory, machine learning), tradeoff between spectrum/performance gain versus additional overhead used in implementing DSA. Some of tradeoff studies are presented in terms of price of anarchy, which is defined as the price that a decentralized system should pay for not being coordinated. We will also present a brief overview of the security issues associated with DSA networks, including communications, jamming/attacks and anti-jamming, standards activities in cognitive networks and current projects related to DSA. Biography: Dr. Zhensheng Zhang received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Dr. Zhang has over twenty years experience in design and analysis of network architecture, protocols and control algorithms. He is currently with Argon ST (formerly SDRC), Principal Scientist, Networking Research, serving as Principal Investigator for many Department of Defense (DOD) projects. He worked at Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies, and Columbia University, focusing on research and development in high speed networks and wireless networks. Dr. Zhang severed as Editor of IEEE Transaction on Wireless Communications from 2002 to 2006 and as Guest Editor for the IEEE JSAC special issue on Overlay Networks, 2003 and the Journal of Wireless Networks issue on multimedia wireless networks, 1996. He is an IEEE COMSOC distinguished lecturer (2010-2011) and will serve as IEEE Globecom 2012 Conference Technical Program Committee (TPC) Chair, to be held in Southern California. He has given many invited talks and tutorials on high speed networks and wireless networks at various conferences and institutes. create Calagator::Event 1250459288 IDSA 3BY10: Design talks and networking with Portland's creative community Roll back

description nil The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) Oregon presents: 3BY10 – A chance to see what creative professionals and design students in Portland are up to, ten minutes at a time. Doors at 6pm, and it’s all wrapped up by 7pm. This month’s speaker: Elena Moon For September 29, the 3BY10 will move to the LeftBank Project, a beautiful, eco-conscious historic renovation on Portland’s east side that’s home to a vibrant community of creative and tech start-up companies, including Sockeye Creative, Uncommon/MNML, and fMYi. LeftBank has graciously offered to host us and provide seating and projection facilities, and we’re currently working out arrangements with Upright Brewing to provide liquid refreshments as well. Also new for September, the normal 3-person format is being replaced by a single long-form presentation and discussion with user research and experience design expert Elena Moon. Elena has been conducting and acting on design research for over a decade, for clients such as Sony, Nau, Chase, Janus Mutual Funds, Microsoft, and Getty Images. This Wednesday she’ll be describing her experiences conducting effective user research under extremely tight budget and time constraints, in conjunction with Carl Alviani, who will supply the client’s perspective on one such project. Come by and get connected with Portland’s creative community!

create Calagator::Event 1250459286 Find Out How CreativeCares at Beer and Blog Roll back

description nil Beer and Blog is thrilled to have Burk Jackson, volunteer superhero and talented photographer, to come to this Friday’s Beer and Blog to chat up his wonderful non-profit CreativeCares http://creativecares.org/. It’s sort of a casual dating service for non-profits who are looking for mutually satisfying relationships with volunteer creatives and techies to build websites, develop digital marketing strategies, and create logos for them. No strings attached, and everyone’s left with warm-and-fuzzy memories. It works like this: CreativeCares partners with non-profits in need of creative and technical services worldwide and matches professionals who wish to volunteer their expertise with organizations who need their help. Volunteers are needed both locally (the Right Brain Initiative, Habitat for Humanity, and the ReBuilding Portland) and internationally (the Disability Aid Abroad program which works to improve the lives of people living in developing countries). With so many cash-strapped non-profits in need our help in crafting their stories, planning their social media marketing campaigns, and building databases for their online community portals, CreativeCares is currently looking for several volunteers expertise in: Photography Film/video Graphic design Web design and development Art direction Marketing Copywriting Public relations Strategy Creative direction Please join us and hear Burk describe his vision for CreativeCares at 4:30pm this Friday, October 1. He’ll be around until at least 6pm for informal mingling and Q&A. Can’t make it Friday but want to be a creative that cares? Head on over to the CreativeCares website and apply online here: http://creativecares.org/join-our-cause/sign-up-here

I'll be kicking off these meetings, but I would love to have some help in organizing the meetings and finding presenters, so let me know if you are interested. Tentative agenda for the first meeting. 6pm - Introductions 6:15pm - MeeGo Overview & Demos 7:15pm - Discuss potential topics for next month Join our Google Group to receive updates and learn more: http://groups.google.com/group/portland-meego-network
