IEEE Oregon - Cognitive Networks/Dynamic Spectrum Access in Wireless Networks
Roll back
description |
<h3>Distinguished IEEE Speaker: Zhensheng Zhang of Argon ST (formerly SDRC)
</h3><p>
Date: Thursday, November 4, 2010<br/>
Time: 6:00-8:00 PM<br/>
</p>
Place: Tektronix Conference Center (Bldg 38), 3025 SW Zworykin Ave, Beaverton, OR 97005
Agenda:
6:00 PM â Social
7:00 PM - Speaker
In this talk, we present a high level overview on the recent development of the cognitive radios/dynamical spectrum access (DSA) techniques, focusing on the following areas: characteristics of the available bandwidth of the primary users, sensing technologies and sensing intervals to detect white spaces, spectrum allocation schemes (graph coloring, game theory, machine learning), tradeoff between spectrum/performance gain versus additional overhead used in implementing DSA. Some of tradeoff studies are presented in terms of price of anarchy, which is defined as the price that a decentralized system should pay for not being coordinated. We will also present a brief overview of the security issues associated with DSA networks, including communications, jamming/attacks and anti-jamming, standards activities in cognitive networks and current projects related to DSA.
Biography:
Dr. Zhensheng Zhang received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Dr. Zhang has over twenty years experience in design and analysis of network architecture, protocols and control algorithms. He is currently with Argon ST (formerly SDRC), Principal Scientist, Networking Research, serving as Principal Investigator for many Department of Defense (DOD) projects. He worked at Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies, and Columbia University, focusing on research and development in high speed networks and wireless networks. Dr. Zhang severed as Editor of IEEE Transaction on Wireless Communications from 2002 to 2006 and as Guest Editor for the IEEE JSAC special issue on Overlay Networks, 2003 and the Journal of Wireless Networks issue on multimedia wireless networks, 1996. He is an IEEE COMSOC distinguished lecturer (2010-2011) and will serve as IEEE Globecom 2012 Conference Technical Program Committee (TPC) Chair, to be held in Southern California. He has given many invited talks and tutorials on high speed networks and wireless networks at various conferences and institutes.

More than just a hot topic and in the news, Social Media, led by its poster children Facebook® and Twitter ®, has quickly become an integral part of our society. While the use of these tools has become pervasive in our social interactions and many companies have integrated these methods into their outbound marketing strategies, there are fewer examples where Social Media has been used to drive innovation within a technology company.
You will hear from both the industry perspective and the media/marketing perspective on how companies are and should be using these new social media tools foster innovation on company products, services, distribution and customer service. They will discuss collaboration, creating community environments, data mining, facilitating customer feedback and how to integrate this information and collaboration into the companyâs product/service development culture. Learn to balance the opportunity promised by Social Media with the real need to protect your Intellectual Property.

IDSA 3BY10: Design talks and networking with Portland's creative community
Roll back
description |

→ |
The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) Oregon presents: 3BY10 â A chance to see what creative professionals and design students in Portland are up to, ten minutes at a time. Doors at 6pm, and itâs all wrapped up by 7pm.
This monthâs speaker: <b>Elena Moon</b>
For September 29, the 3BY10 will move to the LeftBank Project, a beautiful, eco-conscious historic renovation on Portlandâs east side thatâs home to a vibrant community of creative and tech start-up companies, including Sockeye Creative, Uncommon/MNML, and fMYi. LeftBank has graciously offered to host us and provide seating and projection facilities, and weâre currently working out arrangements with Upright Brewing to provide liquid refreshments as well.
Also new for September, the normal 3-person format is being replaced by a single long-form presentation and discussion with user research and experience design expert <b>Elena Moon</b>. Elena has been conducting and acting on design research for over a decade, for clients such as Sony, Nau, Chase, Janus Mutual Funds, Microsoft, and Getty Images. This Wednesday sheâll be describing her experiences conducting effective user research under extremely tight budget and time constraints, in conjunction with Carl Alviani, who will supply the clientâs perspective on one such project.
Come by and get connected with Portlandâs creative community! |

Beer and Blog is thrilled to have Burk Jackson, volunteer superhero and talented photographer, to come to this Friday’s Beer and Blog to chat up his wonderful non-profit CreativeCares http://creativecares.org/. It’s sort of a casual dating service for non-profits who are looking for mutually satisfying relationships with volunteer creatives and techies to build websites, develop digital marketing strategies, and create logos for them. No strings attached, and everyone’s left with warm-and-fuzzy memories.
It works like this: CreativeCares partners with non-profits in need of creative and technical services worldwide and matches professionals who wish to volunteer their expertise with organizations who need their help. Volunteers are needed both locally (the Right Brain Initiative, Habitat for Humanity, and the ReBuilding Portland) and internationally (the Disability Aid Abroad program which works to improve the lives of people living in developing countries).
With so many cash-strapped non-profits in need our help in crafting their stories, planning their social media marketing campaigns, and building databases for their online community portals, CreativeCares is currently looking for several volunteers expertise in:
Photography
Film/video
Graphic design
Web design and development
Art direction
Marketing
Copywriting
Public relations
Strategy
Creative direction
Please join us and hear Burk describe his vision for CreativeCares at 4:30pm this Friday, October 1. He’ll be around until at least 6pm for informal mingling and Q&A. Can’t make it Friday but want to be a creative that cares? Head on over to the CreativeCares website and apply online here: http://creativecares.org/join-our-cause/sign-up-here |

Daybreak Cohousing Social and Site Tour
Roll back
description |

<big>Nurturing a rich and vibrant social fabric...</big>
We still have some homes available and are seeking additional members. Are you interested in joining Daybreak or do you want to learn more about us and cohousing? We hold regular socials to introduce you to our growing community. We value and enjoy the opportunity to get together with each other and with you. Socials are scheduled twice a month, the first Sunday and the third Thursday of the month.
Come socialize with us in our Common House! We are interested in meeting you and having you get to know us a little bit too. In addition, we'll have short tours to view the property, the Common House and some of the homes. We still have some homes available.
To honor our privacy, we request that everyone remain in the main part of the Common House area in which the social is being held or with your tour guide.
The site is accessible for wheelchairs either by using the elevator on the Delaware Ave. entrance or up the entrance ramp at Killingsworth to our 'ground level' (the grade of the ramp does not match ADA requirements, but it is close and should not present a problem).
Our address is 2525 N. Killingsworth St. The entrance is on Killingsworth between N. Delaware and N. Wilbur. Take the Yellow line MAX to the Killingsworth station. Or take the #72 Killingsworth or #35 Greeley bus.
Want to find out more about Daybreak before then?
Please contact Ken at [email protected] or call him at 503-310-7044.

Roll back
description |

Portland MeeGo Network Monthly Meeting
Roll back

I thought it would be fun to start to organize a monthly (or so) Portland MeeGo Meetup. For those of you who don't already know me, I'm Intel's Community Manager for MeeGo. I'll be kicking off these meetings, but I would love to have some help in organizing the meetings and finding presenters, so let me know if you are interested.
For those of you who aren't familiar with MeeGo, it is an open source operating system for small form factor devices (netbook, handset, in-vehicle, tablet, connected TV, etc.) You can learn more at http://meego.com
I checked calagator.org and the third Monday of every month is looking fairly open, which would put our first meeting on October 18 (location TBD, but somewhere centrally located near downtown Portland).
Tentative agenda for the first meeting.
6pm - Introductions
6:15pm - MeeGo Overview & Demos
7:15pm - Discuss potential topics for next month

How to perform a backlinking analysis of your site and your competition.
How to analyze your website to understand EXACTLY what areas of SEO you need to work on to be #1.
On-Page Optimization
How to optimize your page titles, meta descriptions, H tags, copy, URLs and ALT tags.
How to avoid duplicate content and canonical URL issues. How to build a strong internal link structure.
How to see your website THE SAME WAY Google sees it so you can fix the content Google canât spider.
Website architecture best practices: How to turn your website into one that Google loves.
Blog Optimization
What blogging platforms you should use and which ones you should AVOID.
The best WordPress plugins for SEO.
Content Creation
Why itâs important to create fresh, quality content and WHAT GOOGLE CONSIDERS fresh, quality content.
How to create content that is great for your readers AND great for Google (this is one of the biggest challenges most SEOs have).
Link Building
Why links are so important.
The 10 immutable laws of link building (EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!)
The 37 most effective LINK BUILDING TACTICS Iâve ever used and why they work so well.
Analytics
How to MEASURE the success of your campaigns.
All the TOOLS I use to track rankings, traffic and conversions.
The 8 metrics you need to measure if you want to understand what makes you money and what doesnât.
Q&A and Networking
Iâll be answering all your questions and ANALYZING YOUR WEBSITES to tell you what you need to work on to get to the top of Google (Due to time constraints, I can only analyze 2-3 websites, so if youâre interested, please email me at [email protected] a few days before the event.)
Weâll also have some time for networking and building VALUABLE CONNECTIONS.
How Much Is It?
Itâs FREE.
Why? Our Internet Marketing agency has been growing steadily for the last 9 years. Our goal for 2010 was to start giving back to the community, so we started the TOC Foundation, which mission is to help entrepreneurs, marketers and business owners to grow their businesses.

Portland JavaScript Admirers' Monthly Meeting
Roll back
description |
The monthly Meeting of Portland's first JavaScript and ECMAscript users' group. We will discuss topics ranging from client-side web frameworks, to functional and prototypal programming theory.
Topics will be announced on the mailing list at http://groups.google.com/group/pdxjs. If you would like to give a presentation, or have a suggestion for a topic, please send a message to [email protected].
Feel free to join our mailing list at http://groups.google.com/group/pdxjs if you too are a JavaScript admirer. Or visit our web site for more information at http://pdxjs.com/. |

This month Max Ogden will be on hand to talk about Couchappspora < http://github.com/maxogden/couchappspora >, the social communication revolution that he has started. Couchappspora is inspired by Diaspora < http://www.joindiaspora.com/ > but is built as a couchapp using CouchDB < http://couchdb.apache.org/ >.
In addition, Jesse Hallett will present an end-to-end tutorial on how to set up JSTestDriver < http://code.google.com/p/js-test-driver/ > to automate the process of running QUnit tests < http://docs.jquery.com/Qunit > using QUnitTestRunnerPlugin < http://github.com/jivesoftware/QUnitTestRunnerPlugin >. We have had talks on testing before, including a great talk from Duncan Beevers on simulating time with Bobble < http://github.com/duncanbeevers/bobble >. In this talk Jesse will focus on automation and asynchronous tests, including more discussion on when simulated time or asynchronicity is the better choice and when to mix and match.
There will be pizza provided by Jive Software.
Feel free to join our mailing list at http://groups.google.com/group/pdxjs if you too are a JavaScript admirer. Or visit our web site for more information at http://pdxjs.com/. |

Portland R User Group
Main talk:
"Getting Started with R"
M. Edward (Ed) Borasky
Lightning talk:
"R in the Wild: Qmedtrix"
Homer Strong
Social hour (following talks):
Le Hana Japanese Bar & Grill
3500 SW River Parkway
Talk descriptions:
"Getting Started with R" will cover:
Downloading and installing R from CRAN on Windows, Mac or Linux.
Linux includes openSUSE, Ubuntu and Fedora.
Running a few demos.
The structure of CRAN.
Where the documentation is on an installed system.
The RSeek search engine.
Mr. Borasky will also have .ISO files of his R-based openSUSE appliance, which is at http://borasky-research.net/about-smartznmeb/. If you bring blank DVDs, copies can be burned for you. At the moment it has R, GGobi, Mondrian, Rcmdr and a bunch of natural language processing / text mining software, both in R and otherwise, and will also have the Spatial and ReproducibleResearch task views by the meeting. It will run on a 32-bit PC but may not support everyone's WiFi hardware.
"R in the Wild: Qmedtrix" is the first of a (hopefully) recurring series of "R in the Wild" talks that explore how R is actually being used in various companies and organizations in the Portland area. Qmedtrix is "the health care reimbursement decision expert in the workers' compensation, group health and auto medical markets."
Speaker bios:
M. Edward (Ed) Borasky is a freelance developer / engineer specializing in applied mathematics / statistics, social media analytics research and Linux performance engineering / capacity planning. He has created Linux appliances for social media analytics research and algorithmic composition and synthesis of music. His hobby is collecting hobbies.
Homer Strong is a research & development engineer at Qmedtrix Systems Inc. He enjoys reading through the R base package and avocado milkshakes.
