create Calagator::Event 1250461378 Lean ITIL Workshop Roll back

description nil The marching orders for today’s IT leaders are clear: provide run-the-business projects and services better, faster and cheaper, in order to free up time and money to focus on initiatives that will drive business growth and innovation. To accomplish this, we need a disciplined approach to improving the quality, consistency, availability, and cost of IT services. This is the intent of ITIL, which is founded upon Dr. Deming’s Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle of continual improvement of processes, products and services. By quickly addressing root causes of problems, we can improve the stability and quality of the overall environment. This in turn reduces the number of incidents, freeing up capacity to provide more and better IT services to the business at a lower cost. When properly adopted, ITIL transforms the IT organization from reactive problem responders into providers of high quality services to satisfied customers. Attendees are encouraged to bring real scenarios and challenges to discuss with the class, as we learn to apply Lean Thinking to improve IT Services. create Calagator::Event 1250461377 Achieving IT Service Excellence Roll back

description nil ACHIEVING IT SERVICE EXCELLENCE is not just a desire but a necessity to position your IT organization as the competitive “provider of first choice.” Technology for most organizations is a commodity; having a service oriented team is where you will truly begin to gain competitive advantage. Successful IT organizations have an IT Service Strategy that is based on a common definition of service and an understanding of what is important from your clients’ perspective. “Achieving IT Service Excellence” means that everyone from the CIO to the individual contributor delivers consistent service and manages the client’s expectations on an ongoing basis. create Calagator::Event 1250461376 "Max Guernsey: Goad Testing: Guaranteeing that Tests Make Distinctions" Roll back

description nil Test Driven Development has reached maturity. Goad Testing takes you a level deeper, examining what tests really are and using the outcome of that exercise to derive new ways of keeping software - both production and test - healthy, flexible, and on-specification. Making distinctions is a critical aspect of a test: It allows a test to serve as an executable specification. Sometimes this ability is lost in the course of maintenance. Goad testing is a way to prevent that from happening without introducing significant extra work or complexity. About Max Guernsey III, Hexagon Software LLC: I’ve been in the software development industry for over ten years. Nearly half of that has been spent mentoring teams in various aspects of Agility, including Design Patterns, TDD, User Story creation & analysis. In the last few years, I’ve become interested in how Lean and Agile fit together. This event is free and is at our new location, Puppet Labs. It begins at 6:30 pm with pizza, sponsored by PNSQC (Many thanks to both Puppet Labs and PNSQC for supporting agile in Portland). The program starts at 7:00 pm. After the program you're invited to join us for a no-host gathering at a nearby brewpub for further discussion of chicken wings and other agile conundrums.

description nil FROM THE WEBSITE: With its double pyramid-style roof, vaulted ceilings and generous woodwork inside, Raleigh Hills greets first timers and regulars alike with the comfortable feeling of an old friend. A beer garden outdoors beckons thirsty patrons during the summertime and McMenamins pub fare is served up daily for lunch and dinner. Look closely at the full color mural on the south wall of Raleigh Hills Pub — the trompe-l'oeil-style painting features likenesses of longtime customers. Raleigh Hills Pub allows pets at the two tables adjacent to the parking lot. No pets on the patio.

update Calagator::Event 1250461291 Vision Planning for the Community-Minded Roll back

description Vision planning for people who want to do something for a community. Do you not yet have a vision statement written out, or would you like to tweak or revise? And do you say things like, "I was hoping someone would want to contribute to my project since it is for the public good"? Then this workshop is for you. Saturday, September 20th, 10am-12pm. Alex Linsker, Catherine Poole, and Russ Finkelstein will be the main facilitators and coaches of the workshop. The main questions about your vision: Where are you coming from? What phrasing describes the reason why you’re doing this? If related questions come up organically, we’ll explore. These questions are where groups like “Collective Agency” started. Whether a website, open source project, discussion group, nonprofit startup, or something else, the main focus of the people who show up will be for the benefit of a group or groups of people (the "community"). We’ll have fun and develop a vision planning community of our own. In 2 hours we will meet-and-greet (go around and say what we’re working on and what we’d like to happen with it), have a brief overview, then invest most of the time in one-on-one coaching in 15 minute sessions. Coaches will each bring a vision plan for something they’ve done. This event is free of charge. Coaching/mentoring/skill-sharing will be available here in the future with both free and paid options. Please RSVP. Plancast is best, so people can see you're coming. Email [email protected] or tweet @alexlinsker with any questions. Vision planning for people who want to do something for a community. description Identifying fraud and suspicious activity on the Internet is all about data. iovation protects its customers by analyzing devices performing high value transactions and recommending an action in real-time based on past activity. Apache Cassandra can consume and analyze a ridiculous amount of data while keeping costs low. At iovation an implementation using Cassandra currently supports 10,000 read/write operations per second on a cluster storing over 1 billion rows in 500GB, Cassandra makes this solution horizontally scalable, highly available, recoverable, and cheap (under $20k). In this presentation Darin will cover some of the other options his team explored, hardware choices that were made, and the more interesting tunables Cassandra offers that allow you to squeeze IOPS out of your cluster. Presenter: Darin Glatt, Principal Application Architec, iovation Darin Glatt is software developer with over 10 years experience working with large-scale distributed systems. He is currently the Application Architect for iovation where he helps fight fraud, account take over, and identity theft on the Internet by tracking device reputation and suspicious activity in real-time. Prior to taking on the bad guys of the Internet, Darin helped build a massively multi-player blackjack game for the UltimateBet platform and developed MetroOnes nationwide VoIP network, the backbone of their 411 offering. Prior to taking on the bad guys of the Internet, Darin helped build a massively multi-player blackjack game for the UltimateBet platform and developed MetroOnes nationwide VoIP network, the backbone of their 411 offering.

update Calagator::Event 1250461291 Vision Planning for the Community-Minded Roll back

description Vision planning for people who want to do something for a community. Do you not yet have a vision statement written out, or would you like to tweak or revise? And do you say things like, "I was hoping someone would want to contribute to my project since it is for the public good"? Then this workshop is for you. Saturday, September 20th, 10am-12pm. Alex Linsker and Catherine Poole will be the main facilitators and coaches of the workshop. The main questions about your vision: Where are you coming from? What phrasing describes the reason why you’re doing this? If related questions come up organically, we’ll explore. These questions are where groups like “Collective Agency” started. Whether a website, open source project, user group, nonprofit, or something else, the main focus of the people who show up will be for the benefit of a group or groups of people (the "community"). Vision planning for people who want to do something for a community. update Calagator::Event 1250461216 Dorkbot Workshop -- PCB Layout Using EAGLE Roll back

description More details TBA Cost: FREE No RSVP required. Just drop in. Description: We all love circuits with blinky lights that make strange noises, but imagine how much cooler your circuits would look on a custom-designed and manufactured circuit board. It's easier than it may seem, and we're going to show you how it's down. Using the free version of EAGLE PCB you can design your own circuit boards in a format that is then easy to have fabricated. This is an introductory course on using EAGLE to design printed circuit boards for fabrication. It's aimed at beginners that may have breadboarded some electronics, and now want to make a final circuit board. We'll design a simple circuit, draw out the schematic, and lay out a board. Bring a computer: Mac, Linux, or Windows. Please download and install Eagle beforehand from http://www.cadsoftusa.com/downloads/ Laen, the ever dedicated Dorkbotter behind the DorkbotPDX group PCB order, will be showing you all of the necessary ins and outs so that you, too, can make your very own printed circuit boards.

Who would have thought? - Users now routinely block ads, scripting and Flash - Apple has declared war on Flash! - HTML 5 and CSS 3 are starting to appear in the wild - Security is finally coming first, not last How have these factors changed the way you serve web content? update Calagator::Event 1250461311 PLUG Advanced Topics: Roundtable: Web serving in the post-LAMP era Roll back

description This month's meeting will be a roundtable discussion about modern web serving. The CGI era gave way to LAMP and we're now onto the next generation: - node.js and NoSQL make LAMP overkill for many situations - AJAX/JavaScript are moving much application logic to the browser - Apache is giving way to lighttpd, node.js, nginx and others - We've gone from 9" Mac support to 1024 X 768 and now to 4" phones - Users now routinely block ads, scripting and Flash - Apple has declared war on Flash! - HTML 5 and CSS 3 are starting to appear in the wild - Security is finally coming first, not last How have these factors changed the way you serve web content? Are the fundamental problems being solved and making your job easier? Please share your experiences at this roundtable and bring your questions. When: Tuesday, September 20th, 7PM Where: Free Geek: 1731 SE 10th Avenue, not far from the Lucky Lab Food and Drink: Bring your own, consider Lucky Lab take-out This month's meeting will be a roundtable discussion about modern web serving. update Calagator::Event 1250461214 Portland Java User Group Roll back

description This month's topic: TBD ---------- Speaker: TBD ---------- PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :) Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up! Many people also go for a drink and further discussion following the meeting, at a location determined ad hoc (lately, Trees restaurant in the same building). http://twitter.com/pjug http://pjug.org/ (join our mailing list, linked from the website!) This month's topic: GWT in the Real World - Building Enterprise GWT Applications in Legacy Application Frameworks This is a discussion on how Nike replaced a legacy JavaScript data grid with a grid written in GWT. Topics covered will include: * Why GWT? * Architectural design considerations * Packaging and deployment * Deploying GWT into a JDK 1.4 container * Browser compatibility issues * Performance, performance, performance - how we made it as fast as possible * Useful tools, libraries, and technologies * Lessons learned ---------- Speaker: Douglas Bullard Douglas Bullard has been writing Enterprise applications in Java and associated technologies for 15 years. He has spent the last 10 years at Nike working on Nike.net - Nike's B2B e-commerce site. ---------- PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :) Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. update Calagator::Event 1250461336 Lean IT Leadership: Problem Solving Workshop Roll back

description Many Lean IT initiatives, such as Agile software development, and the ITIL service management framework, intend to do just that. But often something is missing – the basic discipline for teams to find and fix problems once and for all. At the heart of Lean Thinking is the Plan-Do-Check-Act problem solving process popularized by Dr. Deming over fifty years ago. This problem solving discipline is still vital today, and it’s the very core of what it means to be a “learning organization.” This workshop provides hands-on, experiential learning by applying this discipline to a problem that is meaningful to you: <ul><li> First comes a little advance homework – choose a problem you and your team face, gather some data and artifacts, and speak to your stakeholders to understand their perspectives and needs</li> <li>Then attend the workshop for a six-hour interactive walkthrough of the problem solving process, during which we will tackle the problem you and your team have brought to class</li> <li>Take what you’ve learned back to your workplace and share with your associates <li>Then participate in a conference call with the course instructor to discuss what you’ve learned, and how you and your team are addressing in a way that it stays solved</li> </ul> Register and learn more: http://learningforleverage.com/events/lean-it-problem-solving-workshop/ At the heart of Lean Thinking is the Plan-Do-Check-Act problem solving process popularized by Dr. Deming over fifty years ago.
