What is BarCamp?
BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from participants. You never quite know what to expect at BarCamp. When you arrive on Friday, there will be an agenda framework (times / rooms), but the content for the sessions will be decided by the participants. |

Mt. Scott Community Center's teen program and Portlandâs Future Connect initiative will be hosting, "Tech Night," an opportunity for neighborhood teens to explore tech and vocational opportunities throughout Portland. We're aiming to include hands-on activities and games as a vehicle for sharing information that encourages young people to consider their future career path and necessary education. We're also interested in showcasing volunteer opporunities and cool projects going on in Portland.
If you or your group would be interested in leading a hands-on activity, sharing a volunteer/internship opportunity, or leading a brief skill demonstration, please contact Tabitha Boschetti at [email protected].
Teens interested in attending should contact Mt. Scott at (503) 823-3183 with registration number #365887. All teen events are open to ages 12-18, and while we ask for $1 to offset costs, no one is turned away for lack of funds.

AgilePDX presents, "The Mikado Method: or how to behead the legacy beast"
Roll back
description |

Our speaker:
Ola Ellnestam, board member of the Agile Alliance; co-author of âThe Mikado Methodâ; and founder of Agical AB, a consultancy based in Stockholm Sweden. Ola likes to combine people, technology, and business, which he believes is done best with simple means and flexible processes. More than that he likes to share his knowledge and experiences because, according to him, thatâs how new insights are created.
Details:Â
For any code base there comes a time when you want (or need) to change it. If your changes are extensive, itâs easy to get lost in a jungle of dependencies or on a sea of broken code. Ultimately, you might just give up and shove it away under the legacy label. Instead of doing that, take a look at The Mikado Method, a systematic approach to reclaim your code.Â
http://mikadomethod.wordpress.com/
The method helps you visualize, prepare, and perform business-value focused changes, while delivering, and without having a broken code-base in the process. It enhances team communication, collaboration and learning, and helps individuals stay on track.
Objectives:
At the end of the day, we you will learn:
- how to attack a more more complex restructuring of legacy code
- how to restructure and deliver continuously
- how design principles apply in a restructuring effort
Audience:
Lead developers, architects, programming coaches, or anyone who wants to get some serious hands-on practice on how to work their way out of messy code while keeping a focus on frequent delivery and business value.
For more information (objectives, outline, pre-requisites), write to:
dlarsen [at] futureworksconsulting [dot] com
To register:
Follow the regonline link or send a check for $85 per person made out to "Agile Alliance" with "AgilePDX" in the memo field, along with contact information for the person who is registering for the workshop (or contact information for the list of people). Please include:
* name

* email address
* phone

A User Group focused on Microsoft SharePoint, mostly from an admin/developer perspective. Users of all levels welcome.
This group is not about advancing the marketing agenda of any one company. We see our responsibility as that of providing free SharePoint education by providing knowledgeable people to give presentations about SharePoint topics. We ask that all speakers give presentations that show thought leadership and are not sales pitches. We seek to promote the awareness of best practices in the use of SharePoint. Our goal is to provide the Portlandia SharePoint community with presentations from well-known SharePoint luminaries such as SharePoint MVPs and Microsoft staff, vendors in the SharePoint partner ecosystem, and members of the local community including people from local companies that have implemented SharePoint and can talk about it. |

Additionally, Simple's Director of Research Allen Goodman will be giving a talk on time series analysis:
"From a statistical perspective, the analysis of time series hasn't dramatically diverted from the program established by George Box and Gwilym Jenkins in 'Time series analysis: Forecasting and Control'. However, from a computational perspective, statisticians haven't adopted best practices for model identification, parameter estimation, model diagnostics, or forecasting. I'll model a time series using the Box-Jenkins program in R, outlining contemporary attitudes within the R community on the subject" |
