CHIFOO Presents - Sit up Straight! - How Wearable Technology can Support Healthy Living
Roll back
| description |
Admission is free for CHIFOO members. Admission for non-members is $5. You can also join us prior to the event at the Luck Lab for CHIFOOd.
Have you ever wanted to send a hug from far away, automatically track your daily activity, or have your clothing correct your posture? What if your insulin delivery went from being a plastic shot in your pocket to a beautiful ring on your finger? How ubiquitous can pervasive technology really be? We will look at the rapidly changing future of wearable technology where health and wellness companies are early adopters.
Wearable technology syncs with daily life so that we donât simply think about our health when something hurts, but rather utilize the ever present technology to get and stay healthy. Notoriously unattractive medical devices are being slowly re-engineered into desirable artifacts to carry with pride. Janna will bring a working prototype and samples to interact with and discuss. With 20 years of experience in apparel and health related design, as well as 10 years working in technology, Janna brings a unique perspective of how these two seemingly disparate materials can continue to merge to create the ultimate user experience
Presenter is Janna Kimel, Senior UX Researcher from Regence Group. |

Project Management Foundations and Best Practices
Roll back
| description |
Modern projects are in the clutches of constant pressure. They must deliver more with less, while meeting short schedules and tight budgets. Unfortunately, too many projects fail at this challenge. This class shows you how to organize small to medium size projects, then work with a team to accomplish them on schedule and within budget. Participants learn practical and proven project management techniques, then immediately apply them to real projects as in-class teams.
<b>Topics include:</b>
<ul>
<li>Starting a project on a firm foundation by defining it clearly, then getting alignment among the stakeholders</li>
<li>Visual tools for building a good plan that addresses the how, when, and who of the project</li>
<li>Executing the plan, monitoring progress, steering, and making changes</li>
<li>Properly closing a project, including how to learn lessons for future improvement</li>
</ul>
The class includes proven techniques researched by the Project Management Institute, the global professional body for project management. |

<ul>
</ul>
The class includes proven techniques researched by the Project Management Institute, the global professional body for project management. |

Vizify and Path.to: Reinventing the job search
Roll back
| description |
First, there were HotJobs and Monster. Then, LinkedIn disrupted the job search market. But since then, innovative solutions for job seekers and people looking to hire have been few and far between.
Now, a new generation of products are looking to pick up where LinkedIn left off, enabling both those searching and those hiring to find better connections in the job market.
Portland-based Vizify just released their online profiles, a new way to present yourself online. Taking a step beyond traditional Web-based resumes, Vizify combs through your online profiles, analyzes your behavior, and delivers a customized view of your online profile. Not only is it a visually compelling means of presenting yourself online, it also provide potential employers with a one-stop resource for exploring your skills and talents.
Soon to be available in Portland, Path.to puts the power of your social graph to work, enabling you to find jobs you'll actually love. Why should personalized recommendations be relagated to restaurants and products? Path.to connects you with the right job opportunities in technology and design through personalized recommendations from people you trust.
Join Todd Silverstein, CEO of Vizify, and Pete Cochrane, COO of Path.to, for a discussion about how their respective companies are changing the way you present yourself online and find the employment you're seeking.
*BONUS* Finding the right location to hold events can be a challenge. Tha'ts why we're happy to report we've found a new, affordable location to host tech events. Even if you're not actively looking for a new gig, please join us to test drive 220 Studio, right next door to Voodoo Doughnut. |

Henrik Joreteg â âAvoiding the Spaghettiâ
Clientside code doesn't have to be an ugly cluttered mess. Building clean, sane, maintainable client-side applications is indeed possible. We'll talk a bit about CommonJS on the client, properly abstracting a model layer, the DOM as a dumb view layer, sharing code between client/ server and other techniques for avoiding insanity like automated static code analysis.Â
Henrik is a partner and lead JS developer at &yet (http://andyet.net), a boutique web software company in Richland, WA. He's a member of a growing group of javascript developers who are blazing the trail of realtime and single-page web application development and server-side javascript. Letâs put it this way: the dude cannot shut up about node.js, backbone, and socket.io.Â
He is the primary developer for &bang (http://andbang.com) and has written a slew of single-page real-time web apps using a number of technologies. He recently spoke at NodeConf and KRTConf and was a technical reviewer for O'Reilly's JavaScript Web Applications. He is the author of the popular open source javascript templating solution, iCanHaz.js and as an early adopter of Backbone.js wrote several definitive blogposts on the subject.Â

Portland Perl Mongers -- rosettacode.org chrestomathy review
Roll back
| description |
speaker: you
We will review some of the examples from rosettacode.org, with a focus on Perl 6 (and Perl 5), but may also compare to some of the other language examples.
Please volunteer to pick an example or two to review. Just look for something with a Perl 6 implementation and be prepared to talk us through the problem statement and how the Perl 6 solution works.
As always, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the Lucky Lab.
