Speakers: Gabrielle Roth & Michelle Franz
In February, long-term PDXPUGers Michelle Franz & Gabrielle Roth return to discuss DBLINK and FDW, two methods of accessing data that’s outside your database. We’ll briefly mention SQL/MED on the way, and tell a couple of bad (Dad) jokes.
We’ll cover use (and mis-use) cases, configuration of each, and interesting quirks. Gabrielle will attempt a live demo of file_fdw and postgres_fdw. You’re welcome to follow along if you’d like, just show up with a couple of Pg databases: they can be on the same cluster (or container or RDS instance or what have you) or different ones, doesn’t really matter. One of them should have at least one table with data in it.
About the speakers:
From embedded systems to UI to relational database programming, Michelle’s running an interesting path through the software world. Working with databases is her current episode, with some programming, some DBA, some SysAdmin and a healthy dose of learning agile. She’s very quickly come to appreciate and enjoy working with Postgres and her work has allowed her to learn from some super talented database experts.
Gabrielle has been using Postgres since sometime in the version 7s, and thinks that the best part of using Open Source software is the culture of sharing knowledge. She’s a Senior Data Engineer at NS1 and co-founder and former co-lead of PDXPUG. |

Keynote Speaker: Richard Appleyard, PhD, Deputy CIO, Oregon Secretary of State; President-elect Portland Chapter of SIM
What are ethics and why are they relevant in the IT field? Why is a code of ethics important to us personally and to our organizations? How do you develop and maintain an ethical code for the use of Information Technology in an organization? These are just some of the questions we will consider at the next SIM Portland meeting. Everyone is familiar with the concept of medical ethics and the Hippocratic Oath, “First do no harm.” Ethics are a set of mutually agreed upon rules that encompass the personal and shared standards of behavior expected by a group of people, typically within a given profession. There are now ethical investments and mutual funds that hold to certain principles when selecting companies to invest in.
Information Technology is advancing at an ever increasing rate, and is having an increasing impact on our lives. The recent Facebook / Cambridge Analytica scandal demonstrated what can happen in organizations when there is no ethical grounding, and decisions are simply left up to the bottom line, or market forces. Join host, and incoming SIM-Portland President, Richard Appleyard for the February Chapter meeting where he will share his ideas and facilitate discussion around embracing more formal ethical standards with in the IT management profession. Come and be part of the process to discover what this means to you, to your colleagues and how we might develop a Code of Ethics at the SIM Portland chapter.

+ Review ethical frameworks and discuss which apply to IT
+ Consider the creation of a SIM-Portland Working Group to develop a Code of Ethics for the Chapter
Speaker Biography
Richard is a seasoned Technology Leader in IT Operations, Application Development & Web Management, with a foundation in Informatics Research. He is currently the Deputy CIO and Applications Development Manager at the Oregon Secretary of State. In addition to assisting the CIO, he is responsible for software development team that manages a portfolio of applications for the different SOS divisions; Elections, Corporation, Audits and Archives as well as Business Services. He is the President-elect for the Society of Information Management Portland Chapter and currently planning his agenda for his April 2020-2022 tenure.
Richard is an emerging Technology Ethicist and IT Futurist with a passion for being more thoughtful with how IT is implemented. He is a proponent of Holistic Technology Management that looks for the potential "butterfly effect,” and the unseen opportunities and unintended consequences of today's technology advances. Richard has a Bachelors in Chemistry from the University of Oxford, a PhD in Biochemistry / Biophysics from Washington State University and completed a Post-doctorate in Medical Informatics (Information and Data Science) at Oregon Health and Science University where he focused on Consumer Health Informatics and the usability of patient information systems.

Last month, we learned about the City of Portland's proposed facial recognition bans. The City is also considering implementing a surveillance policy later this year to address other types of surveillance technologies as well. The City of Seattle already has a Surveillance Ordinance, with about half of its total surveillance technologies still awaiting public comment.
Cynthia Spiess will join us this month to give us a brief overview of the Seattle Surveillance Ordinance, the recent activism happening regarding the use of biometric technologies at the Port of Seattle (namely, SeaTac airport), and general recommendations for Portland privacy/tech activists. The focus of the presentation will be mainly on specific takeaways for Portland based on what activists have learned in Seattle.
If time permits, she’ll also cover examples of problems identified in Seattle surveillance technologies. Since Seattle has one of the earliest Surveillance Ordinances in the nation, it also has a number of imperfections (like any beta or v1 software). There are some important lessons that Portland could learn from Seattle, in the hopes of Portland eventually having a stronger Surveillance Ordinance of its own.

Cynthia Spiess is a privacy activist currently living in Seattle. Previously, she worked at Adobe as a Senior Security Researcher. Prior to that, she worked at Amazon Web Services (AWS) as a Security Engineer for the AWS AppSec team; and earlier as a Developer Support Engineer for AWS Premium Support. Her work experience covers front-end and back-end web stacks (GUIs and APIs), both traditional and more modern (NoSQL DBs, docker/Mesos), SecOps/IR, and cloud security.

The February meeting will be held at Microsoft where we're going to hear from Scott Hanselman on personal productivity and being a social developer. We've heard from Scott before and can confirm that he is an excellent speaker with solid advice that will help you make the most of your career in tech.
You can check out some of Scott's huge volume of technical content on his website hanselman.com. There are plenty of blog posts, talks and podcasts to give you a good idea of how fortunate we are to have Scott come join us to speak.
Due to space limitations this event has a hard cap of 60 attendees. We're also going to need to submit a list of attendees to security ahead of time so it's vital that you RSVP if you're planning to attend. With that in mind please don't RSVP if you're not certain you can make it, as we expect we'll end up turning people away for a seat you're not planning to fill.

"Tired of zipping and updating your Lambda functions by hand every time you want to deploy to production? Yeah, me too.
What if I told you that there is a solution out there that lets you deploy your entire application to AWS from your local machine? What, you don't believe me? But this tool even has a cool aerial name that's like super on point because it's about cloud computing! Too good to be true? Great news! This service exists and it is called AWS CloudFormation.
Let's talk about infrastructure as code! In this presentation, Yves will walk us through how to create a stack with CloudFormation... and then delete it! Together, we will thoroughly explore the capabilities of this service through the AWS Console. We will look at the CloudFormation template of an example application and decrypt the hieroglyphs 🐦 ☀️🏺 (also known as YAML CloudFormation) that deploy your resources to AWS. We will build things, break things, and have a good laugh!

PDX Exploit Workshop is the longest running security meetup in Portland (10 years!). It's an open, self driven event for people interested in computer security. Whether you're a novice or career professional, all are welcome. It's always a good time to learn about security!
We spend this dedicated time each week researching and exploring topics of software and hardware security as well as working on personal and group projects. Occasionally we have presentations on our findings. Bring a willingness to learn, a curiosity about security, and/or a specific area of interest to share with others.
This group meets in the PDX Hackerspace mainspace which has comfy seating, deluxe wifi (thanks Kyle!), Club Mate soda in the snack shack, and hackable LED displays to play around with.

Next, we're going to go through the basics of getting started with Home Assistent. We'll talk about what to install it on, how to get it installed, and then maybe adding some simple device to start. If you have a Raspberry Pi or a device that you want to install Home Assistant on please bring it with you. Also if you have a monitor and keyboard that would be great. If not I believe there will be some monitors available. Those who already have Home Assistant running can help out those who are getting it installed
Last but not least, pizza will be provided. I'm asking that everyone bring their favorite beverage. Ideally beer and cider (I prefer cider!) to go with the pizza

Welcome to the PDXNode Hack Night!
What is a PDXNode Hack Night?
PDXNode Hack Nights are your opportunity to enjoy a low-pressure JavaScript-centric environment where you shouldn't feel like you're supposed to do anything. First and foremost–just come and enjoy yourself. The night is yours: hang, hack, learn, or do whatever you’re interested in doing. 🙌
Depending on the size and interests of our attending group, we have various paths the night could go, and may or may not attempt some of the following:
Map Ctrl-H into Hackerspace Regions
The hackerspace will be mapped into 'regions', and you can feel free to gravitate towards whichever one suits your interest!
• A place for beginners who want to get going with node for the first time.
• A place for people who want to work on their own projects (eg. projects you want to do outside of work, but need to find the time).
• A place for people to just hang out and connect.
• A place for people to work on projects in groups!
'Unconference'-style Team Hacks
For team-hackers, we'll have a board up and sticky-notes available available at the beginning of the night. Anyone can feel free to write the name and/or description of something they'd like to hack on with other people–and others who're interested can feel free to go to that region and join in!
End of Night Show and Tell
There will be a list available to write your name, or team's name down on to give a quick show and tell of your projects at the end of the night. We're pumped to see what you've been working on!

Too often we assume we don't have enough time in the day to be with friends. But that's what makes Galentine's Day so special — it gives you a full 24 hours to celebrate the friendships that make your life so wonderful.
"Galentine's Day: How to Make Friends as Professional Women" is a festive opportunity to really honor the power of friendships. Bring your pals to honor each other over free food and drink - we'll have boozy and non-boozy drinks available.
There will be an array of local, successful women speaking on a panel that focuses on the importance of friendships while toiling away in the working world. They'll talk of ways to cultivate friendships, and how to avoid the misconception that you can't make friends as an adult. There'll also be a fun ribbon activity that helps unite introverts, extroverts, and everyone in between. As well as a Valentine's Day card station - write up a message of love for your bestie and we'll stamp and send it for ya!

Meet the Panelists:
Julia Andrews represents the National Association of Women Sales Professionals as the Chapter President for Portland, OR and is the founder and creator of The Art of Feminine Selling™, a sales methodology that highlights empathy and vulnerability as a strength with an emphasis on mindset and authenticity to self. She is a sales coach and a sales-team strategist who's sold over $215M in sales and who bring her expertise from working over 2 decades as a top-tier performer in corporate financial services to help and support women not be afraid of selling and achieve the financial success they envision for themselves. Before moving to the U.S. Julia shares that one of her biggest adventures was learning English as a second language while at the same time learning how to sell as she needed to alleviate the household burden to her single mother with 5 children.
