Our TopicVirgin America. The New York Times. Apple. All three are design leaders and have beautiful websites. Unbeknownst to many of us, they also have gigantic design teams, amazing product or content, and seemingly unlimited budgets - things most of us designers don’t have.
After spending several years designing large-scale responsive websites for Fortune 500 companies with mega-budgets, I now specialize in design for progressive non-profit organizations. The good news is that we can still create kick-ass design for any budget as long as we utilize solid design fundamentals, great communication, and a few tricks up our sleeves.

Our Presenter, Josh RiggsJosh started his UX design career back in ’02 just like most other designers - by creating a website for his metal band. Since then, he’s been a designer for various interactive agencies, a mega health care conglomerate, and an entertainment-focused Drupal consultancy. He’s currently the Lead UX Designer at Portland-based ThinkShout, where he puts his design skills to work for non-profit organizations doing good in the world. Originally from Florida, Josh was lured to Portland by Pok Pok’s chicken wings and Blue Star’s donuts. He likes cold weather, long-exposure photography, and has a female dog named Frank.

When Susan was working on her Bachelor of Engineering and MBA, she had no idea she would one day run her own company. She started her career as a Software Developer for a local software development company, before moving up to a Project Manager which was her first experience in hiring talent. She left the corporate world to become a consultant for a Professional Services organization for several years where she implemented ERP systems. Prior to Y2K when there was a shortage of local talent to provide software remediation, she moved into technology staffing. In those 15 years sha has experienced the highs and lows in hiring technology talent from Y2K, .com bubble and burst, the Great Recession and everything in between. because she loves what she does, in November of 2013 sha started Tech Talent Link where she focuses on assisting companies find technology talent either on direct hire or temporary basis.

Monthly meeting of the open source GIS group PDX-OSGeo.
Discussion of all things spatial and open source. Tonight's guest is Dave Mangold, who will speak to us about how to create great cartographic products using QGIS and Inkscape.
Attendees of FOSS4G will remember the excellent map that Dave produced for the printed program [1].
From Dave's Description of his map:
This map was created entirely from freely available data and open-source software. Data were obtained as shapefile downloads from METRO RLIS. These shapefiles were then loaded into a PostGIS database as spatial tables. The initial map was created in QGIS. This map was then saved in a vector format and finished in InkScape, where label adjustment and creation, feature layering, and annotation were accomplished. On the map, if you look closely at the southern portion of Naito Street (right edge of left panel), you will see a hidden tribute to the free and open-source resources used.

ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 29th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 29th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking.
