This is a Joint meetup with the Portland Erlang and Elixir User Group.
Brian Troutwine of Adroll will be joining us tonight. Adroll uses Erlang to power their high-speed, never-stop online advertising services. That's right, 10 billion transactions a day.
Brian's talk will provide motivation for the extensive instrumentation of complex computer systems and make the argument that such systems are essential. This talk will provide practical starting points in Erlang projects and maintain a perspective on the human organization around the computer system. Brian will focus on getting started with instrumentation in a systematic way and follow up with the challenge of interpreting and acting on metrics emitted from a production system in a way which does not overwhelm operators’ ability to effectively control or prioritize faults in the system. He’ll use historical examples and case studies from my work to keep the talk anchored in the practical.

Open Hardware is starting to change the way the world works, giving more people access to customizable hardware, and giving more power to smaller entities. I intend to give a general overview of open hardware, focusing on the MinnowBoard MAX, and use it as a case study of what people are doing with it and why the open hardware is important to the space it's entering.
John 'Warthog9' Hawley led the system administration team on kernel.org for nearly a decade, leading a team including four other administrators. His other exploits include working on Syslinux, OpenSSI, a caching Gitweb, and patches to bind to enable GeoDNS. He's the author of PXE Knife, a set of interfaces around common utilities and diagnostics tools needed by an average systems administrator, as well as SyncDiff(erent) a state-full file synchronizer and file transfer mechanism. He currently works for Intel working on Open Hardware, and the Minnowboard. In his free time he enjoys cooking extravagant meals and watching bad movies.
Many will head to the Lucky Lab at 1945 NW Quimby St. after the meeting.

Nonprofit technology projects come in all types and sizes, and managing them is rarely anyones primary job. Success is often found not in simply getting “the thing” done, but in managing the process along the way.
It’s easy to understand how nonprofit staff get sidled with project management in the course of their work: you manage the website for your organization, so it just makes sense that you are responsible for the upcoming website redesign project, right? Likewise for the CRM migration, email platform transition, and on, and on.
Nervous about helming such a transition? That’s where this Lab comes in.
Managing a technology-related project for your nonprofit can seem like a daunting task, whether you have experience in project management or not. Each project and organization presents its own unique set of challenges. Even if you feel like you have a good system in place, having a chance to connect with other’s approaches and perspectives can be an eye-opening experience.
During this Lab, we will spend the day working through strategies, frameworks, and best practices to help guide you through the range of technology-related projects that you encounter and how to better manage them for success. Be prepared for exercises that will get you thinking about a particular project your organization is currently working on or getting ready to begin. Also come ready to share your experiences, tips, and lessons learned with the rest of the group as we work to learn as a community.
You’re going to get a chance to learn from experts, connect with peers, find greater success in your nonprofit technology projects, and have some fun along the way.
At the NTEN Lab, you will learn how to:

Until now we haven't focused much at all on a huge part of what makes Elixir great... seamless access to Erlang OTP. OTP, or Open Telecom Platform, is a set of frameworks and tools that make it relatively easy to build robust, fault-tolerant, and scalable applications. In this Elixir Games we're going to focus specifically on the Supervisor. Well-defined supervision strategies are the bedrock of all exceptional Elixir software (Erlang and LFE too).
For the newcomers, the "Games" format is designed to create a bit of friendly competition and is accessible for all ranges of experience; beginners and pros alike.
If you'd like to take a look at the previous sessions' exercises feel free to check them out here: https://github.com/elixir-pdx/, some submitted solutions are available on non-master branches.
Early in this series we'll be focusing mostly on solving problems in a functional paradigm, and as the series continues over time we'll move more and more toward Elixir's differentiators; Erlang interop, hygienic macros, & OTP patterns.
If all that read like gibberish to you, don't worry you don't have to know any of that jargon, and by the time you do everything will already make sense. Because we'll introduce ideas and concepts in a way that will help you understand those things conceptually before you ever need a weird name for them.
Food and drinks will be provided. There will also be small desk fodder prizes for the winning team.
Please make sure you come with a computer to work on and have Elixir pre-installed locally or in a VM and ready to go.

You’ll learn about ways to empower yourself to own your data, create and publish content on your own site, and only optionally syndicate to third-party silos. Along the way you’ll get a solid grounding in the history and future of Microformats, domain ownership, IndieAuth, WebMention and more.
