Impact of Multi-Tasking on Agile Teams
Roll back
| description |

"Do you or someone you know suffer from multi-tasking? Does your company value and promote multi-tasking as a critical key to success? Do your Agile teams have difficulty reconciling their organization’s longstanding culture of multi-tasking with Agile’s emphasis on limiting WIP (“Work In Process”)?
Craig Carrington has observed and coached numerous Agile teams and organizations, all of whom have been challenged in some way by multi-tasking (a.k.a. context-switching) during their Agile journey.
In this session, Craig will describe some of his recent experiences working with clients in this context, and invites everyone to bring their own experiences and thoughts to participate in a conversation about this topic.
He will also facilitate an interactive game that explores the effectiveness of multi-tasking (versus limiting WIP), which you could take and try with your own teams and organizations.
Craig has been an Agile practitioner since 2007, with experience in Scrum, Kanban, and SAFe. He is currently serving as an Agile Coach with SolutionsIQ. He has coached at a number of clients around the country, spanning industries including consumer electronics, internet security, networking equipment, IT, insurance, healthcare, energy, and automotive." |

# Thanks to New Relic for providing the venue and beer, pizza & snacks this month!

ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 29th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 29th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking.
<em>ABOUT THE GROUP: The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the <a href="http://groups.google.com/group/pdxruby">mailing list</a>. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there!

### Making the Most of the lib Directory in a Rails App - Brett Chalupa
Where does code goes that does not cleanly fit within the MVC structure that Rails suggests? Does one create a new folder within the app directory and introduce a new concept to the app? The vendor directory?! Should it go in a gem? When the conventions of Rails do not cover a concept or approach, it is difficult to know where to put classes and modules.
Over the years, I have been putting more code in the lib directory. It allows for more object oriented code composition, faster tests, and a clear path for extraction into gems. Working in a directory with nothing but a "tasks" directory can be a bit daunting at first, but soon enough it will start to feel like home.
In this talk, I want to show the benefits of putting code in the lib directory, when to put code in lib, how to test code in lib, how to configure a Rails application to use the lib directory, and common pitfalls to watch out for. There will be plenty of examples, open source code to reference, and hopefully other folks sharing their experiences with the lib directory.

PDX Design Research Group

<b>Designing for Connections</b>
Dwayne King, Pinpoint
Humans have a deep-seated evolutionary drive to congregate and organize themselves into communities. Modern-day communities provide protection, commerce and connection. Social resources like trust and shared identity make it easier for people to work and play together, creating a more productive and prosperous society. Productivity and prosperity are normally measured in objects and people, but these resources also reside in social relations among people. This extends the idea of capital beyond physical, financial and human to include social capital. Social capital provides a framework to make deliberate investments to develop resources that inhere in social relations. Research shows that increased social capital improves health, safety, education, government and the economy.
In this presentation, Dwayne King will give an overview of the Connection Experience Design (CxD) process, explaining how it draws from techniques successfully used in other disciplines. He’ll explore what he considers its core principles: co-design, systems thinking, prototyping, and habitat, and explain how its research and testing methods differ from those of UxD.
Please join us for what promises to be an enlightening and entertaining evening!
<b>About the Speaker</b>
Dwayne King is the President of Pinpoint, a design strategy agency located in Portland, OR.
<b>Event Info</b>
Date: Wednesday, January 20th, 2016
Time: Informal networking is from 6:30 – 7:00, with Dwayne’s talk to begin promptly at 7:00
<b>Please note: If you arrive after 7:00 pm, you will not be able to get into the building. Please plan to arrive at least a few minutes before then, as there won't be anyone downstairs to let you in.</b>

Portland Startup Week: FailPDX
Roll back

###FailPDX back in action!
FailPDX will be kicking off the new year with a 4 person panel discussing the trials and tribulations of building a successful business. Each panel member will share their personal failures, what they learned from the experience, and answer any questions we may have. This FailPDX event is officially part of Portland Startup Week. Startup Week is a free, five-day celebration of our community that builds momentum and opportunity around entrepreneurship. The week is led by local entrepreneurs and hosted in amazing spaces all over town.
For those who may not be familiar with our group: FailPDX was created out of direct response to a lot of the meetups and conferences that seemed to be focused on all of the good things about being part of startup and taking chances. The truth is, success is a unicorn. FailPDX was created to remind people that failure is inevitable. This group is a place where everyone can come together to listen and share their failure stories.
If you are interested in speaking at or sponsoring one of our events, please email [email protected].
###Schedule:
5:00 PM: Refreshments & Networking<br>
5:30 PM: Presentation followed by Q/A <br>
6:30 PM: Wrap things up<br>
*Please note the above schedule is subject to change and will include our panelist closer to event time.*
Look forward to seeing everyone! |
