To get your bike up to the 29th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." This talk will focus around using a Cucumber/Ruby/Calabash to formulate a single GIT repo for testing both iOS and Android apps with the same test cases. ## Embracing --api by Mitch Lloyd It's hard to beat the productivity of Rails in the hands of an experienced developer. But what happens when user expectations drag your server-rendered application into the tortured hellscape of client-side JavaScript? JavaScript creeps into your once beautiful code base: a typeahead search field, a client-side validation, an AJAX-powered star rating widget. This pathogen has no unit tests and causes the number of bugs and Selenium tests to grow. In this talk I'll explore why companies that resist client-side rendering still ship 350KB of gzipped JavaScript to their users. With examples I'll argue that there is a better way: separating your API from your client code. This approach that I once reserved for "highly interactive" applications, I now consider "a matter of course". For the majority of applications it leads to faster development, simpler architecture, and more flexible approaches for building and deploying UI. description nil → The Cheron Mayhall Lecture Series presents Gabriella Coleman "How Anonymous (Narrowly) Evaded the Cyberterrorism Rhetorical Machine" Anonymous—the masked activists who have contributed to hundreds of political operations around the world since 2008—were perfectly positioned to earn the title of cyberterrorists. In this talk Gabriella Coleman considers the various factors that allowed them to narrowly escape this designation. Thursday, March 3 7 p.m. Marsh Hall 216 Gabriella Coleman is a cultural anthropologist who holds the Wolfe Chair in Scientific and Technological Literacy at McGill University in Canada. She researches, writes, and teaches on computer hackers and digital activism. She is the author of Coding Freedom: The Ethics and Aesthetics of Hacking as well as Hacker, Hoaxer, Whistleblower, Spy: The Many Faces of Anonymous, winner of the 2015 Diana Forsythe Prize by The American Anthropological Association's Committee on the Anthropology of Science, Technology and Computing. Traditional metrics can give an incomplete or misleading view of how well a team is actually delivering. Story points can also be misleading, as it's easy to inflate story sizes to game the metric. So what's a worthwhile metric to use for judging how well a team is doing, and most importantly, how well the team is improving? What have you found that works well? description After a review of our previous meeting about the basics of Data Visualization (Dec. 2012) we will explore some of the more complex issues of expressing complex business behavior in graphic form. You do not need to have attended the basics presentation to get value from this advanced presentation. Included in this session are the five basic chart types, along with topics of normalization and the importance of context. We will then look at more advanced concepts for the expression of metrics (such as cartograms, step functions, metrics which go negative, non-linear scales, and lineage charts). We will discuss the importance of understanding volatility in a metric, and the expression of uncertainty and ambiguity. Rankings can be misleading; we will show how. Tree maps are useful, but heat maps can be dangerous. We may look at using scatter diagrams to evaluate the correlation of market indexes. If we have time, we will look at the expression of non-metric ideas, including VENN diagrams. <h3>About the Speaker</h3> Michael Scofield, M.B.A. is an Asst. Professor of Health Informatics at Loma Linda University. His experience includes banking, manufacturing, higher education, and software development. For the past 17 years he has spoken widely to professional audiences around the U.S., Canada, and Australia and the U.K. on topics of data management, data visualization, data quality assessment, and data acquisition. description nil → After a review of our previous meeting about the basics of Data Visualization (Dec. 2012) we will explore some of the more complex issues of expressing complex business behavior in graphic form. You do not need to have attended the basics presentation to get value from this advanced presentation. Included in this session are the five basic chart types, along with topics of normalization and the importance of context. We will then look at more advanced concepts for the expression of metrics (such as cartograms, step functions, metrics which go negative, non-linear scales, and lineage charts). We will discuss the importance of understanding volatility in a metric, and the expression of uncertainty and ambiguity. Rankings can be misleading; we will show how. Tree maps are useful, but heat maps can be dangerous. We may look at using scatter diagrams to evaluate the correlation of market indexes. If we have time, we will look at the expression of non-metric ideas, including VENN diagrams. <h3>About the Speaker</h3> Michael Scofield, M.B.A. is an Asst. Professor of Health Informatics at Loma Linda University. His experience includes banking, manufacturing, higher education, and software development. For the past 17 years he has spoken widely to professional audiences around the U.S., Canada, and Australia and the U.K. on topics of data management, data visualization, data quality assessment, and data acquisition. Michael has spoken several times for the Portland DAMA chapter, and before 23 other DAMA chapters around the country.
