AgilePDX Pub Lunch: How Do We Measure Value?
Roll back
| description |
There’s a lot of talk about throughput and just “getting stuff done” in Agile and Lean environments. We relative size things with story points. We wrapped around the axle about velocity. But, isn’t the point to deliver value for the best quality hand price while fostering humane workplaces?
If Agile is about delivering value, then why do we spend the greatest amount of our time on metrics for the delivery side of the house? How can we measure value? How would this help inform prioritization?
Last month’s pub lunchers started digging into this from several perspectives, and they want to dig more. Grab a shovel and come along. Better, yet, grab your PO or PM and come along. We’ll get this figured out over lunch. You'll find us in the back. RSVP's welcome, but not required, at [email protected]. |

Philippe De Ryck, PhD<br>
Web Security Expert @ imec-DistriNet, KU Leuven
Talk
===
Angular 2 is hot, and there is a huge amount of information available on building applications, improving performance, and various other topics. But do you know how to make your Angular 2 applications secure? What kind of security features does Angular 2 offer you, and which additional steps can you take to really boost the security of your applications?
In this session, we cover one of the biggest threats in modern web applications: untrusted JavaScript code. You will learn how Angular protects you against XSS, and why you shouldn't bypass this protection. We will also dive into new security mechanisms, such as Content Security Policy. Through a few examples, I will show you how you can use these mechanisms to enhance the security in your client-side context.

Erlang-Elixir - Moving Complexity Around
Roll back
| description |
Jessie Cook will lead our exploration tonight.
Jessie: A beginner Alchemist who's really enjoying the functional nature of Elixir and the design of the language.
Description: Moving complexity around - What's the best way to provide a unified API in front of some of the worst APIs out there? The tools I reached for are Phoenix, Absinthe for GraphQL and a series of adapters. These adapters utilize both polymorphism and metaprogramming, but was this the right way to do it in Elixir? Let's discuss the overall architecture and the nitty gritty details.

Neurogeeks is a (now monthly!) meetup for people interested in neuroscience, cognitive psychology, technology and the mind. Our meetups address a range of related topics at a "TEDTalk" or Nova level of complexity. Our goal is to build a community of people interested in the brain in Portland.
This month, we'll be discussing various ways scientists and "life-hackers" are trying to enhance brain function and essentially make people "smarter." Lots of interesting avenues of discussion!
For more information, [join the meetup](https://www.meetup.com/NeuroGeeks-Neuroscience-Meetup-Group/events/237690287/) and RSVP. |

August 6th, 2016 we opened up shop in the wonderful SE Woodstock neighborhood in SE Portland. Our Woodstock Taproom features our New Haven style pizza, sandwiches, salads, brewer-crafted cocktails, and don’t forget the beer…lots and lots of beer…
Like our Hood River location we try to provide a fun and comfortable atmosphere for everyone who enters. The large windows bring warm glow to the wooden booths, tables, and handcrafted bars. We have two lounge areas that are home to some cozy couches for you to sit back and enjoy a beer. Large open air windows and sidewalk seating are a big hit during the warm summer months. When live bands are not taking the stage in the evenings, relax and listen to the sounds of our ever growing vinyl music collection.
We don’t take reservations, come on in and have a beer while you wait. Please check in with the host, give them your phone number and they’ll text you when your table is ready. We will do what we can to seat you as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience! |

Agile PDX: A Taste of Training from the Back of the Room!
Roll back
| description |
Effectively conveying information and knowledge to others is a critical skill. But how do we, as humans, learn best? When do people start to lose focus on our message? How can you as a coach, facilitator, trainer, teacher (one who wants to help others learn), or presenter use the latest in brain-based learning to help those you are teaching to learn? This brief overview of the content in Sharon Bowman's <i>Training from the Back of the Room!</i> is an invitation to see who is doing the most talking, moving, and writing in all of your communications. You will also get a glimpse of the 6 learning principles and 6 memory vehicles that you might use in your next presentation, training, or coaching session. This interactive session is an invitation to look at how we traditionally teach and how we naturally learn. It expresses the evolution of training from the traditional hierarchical norm to an emergent partnership norm.
Christine Brautigam presents this opportunity to learn how you can be most effective when transferring knowledge to others!
<strong>Bio:</strong>
Christine A. Brautigam founded <a href="http://inspiredagility.com/">Inspired Agility</a> in 2015 to offer training programs for meaningful work and healthy environments. Her extensive career experience has been focused on the software industry and is now evolving to bring Agile practices to other industries. Her current path is through brain-based learning techniques, mindful change management, and deliberately developmental organizations. Christine is a dynamic trainer dedicated to your development. Christine's focus is on <a href="http://www.tealforteal.com/">tealforteal.com</a> and <a href="http://www.responsive.org/">responsive.org</a> and her education includes: MS in Information Technology Management from Carnegie Mellon University • BS in Industrial and Operations Engineering from University of Michigan • Certified Scrum Master (CSM) • Certified Integral Embodied Practitioner (EPC1). |

Let's follow the life cycle of an accessibility bug. Joe Watkins will guide us on a developer-oriented exploration of how these bugs hatch, mature, multiply, and — most importantly — how these pesky critters can be squashed. Come join in the moderated Q&A.
We will begin the evening with social time and then the presentation at 7 so there is plenty of time for Q&A, discussion and a bit of networking/wrap-up at the end.
Presenter: [Joe Watkins](https://www.linkedin.com/in/joewatkins/) is an Accessibility Consultant with [Simply Accessible](http://simplyaccessible.com/). Joe has a passion for the web and working with others to make it more usable for everyone.
Moderator: [Bruce Elgort](https://bruceelgort.com/) is an instructor in the web development program at Clark College. He emphasizes accessibility from day 1 in all of his classes. Bruce is also a low vision user who himself relies on accessibility with his day-to-day activities. |
