update Calagator::Event 1250472787 Good Data, Bad Info @DAMA PDX - November 16 Roll back

description Join your fellow Portland area Lovers of Data for breakfast, networking, and a data talk by Michael Scofield from Loma Linda University; hosted by your local Portland DAMA chapter. We meet at in Downtown Portland at 8:30am for registration and networking with the presentation from 9 to 11:30am. RSVP Required. More Information and RSVP at: https://damapdx.wordpress.com/2017/10/05/november-2017-good-data-bad-info/ Free for members and employees of corporate members.
Students only $5 (to cover breakfast and speaker travel).
About "Good Data, Bad Info"
Producing decision-able information from lots of raw data often requires complex processes which must be carefully designed and architected. Mind the Gap: This presentation looks at the gap between raw data and decision-able information. Most of the chatter about data quality focuses upon raw, granular data describing discrete events and entities inside the enterprise and around it. But for data warehouses and decision-support, data must be converted into useful information meaningful to the decision-maker. Raw or Derived? Trend and Pattern Examples: We will also examine numerous examples between raw data and derived data (“information”) which show us trends, patterns, etc. Examples come from astronomy, military intelligence, and criminology. For example, in image analysis (in the intelligence community) we see a succession of “derived” data as we move from pixels to clues about the enemy’s strategic intent. The 9 MetaData Types - Which and Why: As an enterprise is inundated with more data (raw, intermediate, and advanced information) the designing and population of good metadata becomes even more important. We will look at nine distinct kinds of metadata. Not all kinds are of equal importance, but we will show the value of each. The larger the organization, and the more diverse the “institutional memory”, the more important it is to properly document the data asset for broader exploitation of its value. Correct Conclusions? Handle with Care: We will also look at how incorrect conclusions may be drawn because of mishandling of the process to derive “higher level” information from the raw data.
About DAMA Portland
The Portland Metro Chapter of the Data Administration Management Association has been serving the Portland data community since 1984. We are a not-for-profit, vendor independent, professional association dedicated to advancing the concepts and practices of enterprise information and data resource management. Our primary purpose is to promote the understanding, development and practice of managing data, information and knowledge resources as key enterprise assets. description nil Imagine coming to work every day where you're free to be your authentic self, you have open trust with all of your coworkers, and you can easily focus together, experiment, and create great value without regard to role or hierarchy. What if all individuals and teams got to experience this kind of open, creative, productive, inspiring workplace? We too often see that this is not the case for ourselves or our teams as we often lack Psychological Safety in our work environment. So what are the culprits that cause this lack of safety? Is it miscommunication, politics, old management practices, or something else? Join us as we explore the challenges to Psychological Safety and learn from each other's experiences where Psychological Safety was at it's best and teams thrived. If you've been on either side of this Safety line, we invite you to share your experiences and what has helped your teams to open up or caused them to shut down. Continuing with our theme of learning, the Westside cafe will discuss how we can create a culture where it is ok to probe deeply into our mistakes without fear. Please join us Nov 17th for this discussion. [Note: This session will be held at the McMenamins Cornelius Pass Roadhouse. Please ask the host at the front of the Imbrie Hall building for the AgilePDX group's location.]

create Calagator::Event 1250472784 Operation Code Benefit & Dinner Roll back

description nil All relevant information can be found here: https://operationcode.org/benefit Buy tickets here: https://buytickets.at/opcode/122463 The 2017 Operation Code Benefit Dinner & Auction will celebrate the tens of hundreds of life-changing educational and mentorship opportunities provided throughout the country and across the globe since 2014 while aspiring to deliver more next year. Every day a new active military service member, citizen-soldier, veteran, spouse or military family member joins Operation Code for software mentorship, career guidance and assistance, for the lifelong friendships, tech conference and code school scholarships, and to be part of something bigger than themselves— an open source community comprised of passionate volunteer software developers and technology entrepreneurs all dedicated to helping the men and women who’ve served in uniform and their families get the technical skills necessary for the 21st century new skills economy. In too many cases, they face financial barriers and hardships to get started. At Operation Code, we believe every service member, citizen-soldier, veteran and family member deserves exceptional technology training and mentorship. We believe that all who’ve worn the uniform and their families should fill the nation’s technical talent shortage. That’s what drives each and every one of us: our global network of volunteer software developers, who donate tens of thousands of hours towards mentoring those who’ve served and their families, and our supporters who back us through employee-employer matching, in-kind contributions, and generous sponsorship. On Friday, November 10, 2017, we will come together at the Sentinel Hotel’s Governor Ballroom to pause, reflect, toast and celebrate how far we’ve come. We will honor those who’ve served in uniform and how much they’ve learned through the communities generosity. With your support, we will continue to fund our education programs and seed our first scholarship endowment so we can go further, faster tomorrow.

Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women. Our events are inclusive. description Abstract A well known security expert and cryptographer, Thomas H. Ptáček, once said: "If You're Typing the Letters A-E-S Into Your Code You're Doing It Wrong". Wait, what?!? Doesn't everyone use AES? Of course we do. Is AES broken? Nope. In this developer-oriented talk I'll explore what mistakes developers commonly make when implementing cryptosystems, just how easily these problems can be exploited in the real world, and what Thomas meant by his statement. Speaker's Bio Tim taught himself how to write software at the age of twelve and has been a die-hard technologist ever since. After earning his computer science degrees (B.S., Harvey Mudd College and M.S., Northeastern University), Tim spent 8 years helping build a Boston-based information security consulting practice that was recently acquired. In 2014, Tim founded Blindspot Security where he has continued his work as a security consultant, helping his customers understand how digital intruders can gain access to their critical business assets through network, application, and comprehensive security assessments. Abstract A well known security expert and cryptographer, Thomas H. We plan to cover many beneficial topics: • Morning preparation, attire, mindset • Preparation for the non-technical parts • How to study for the coding interview • How to execute the coding test Due to the level of interaction required, attendance will be capped at 20. Never fear, we will be organizing this same event bi-monthly because we want everyone to have access to this workshop!
