Thursday, June 7, 2018 Applying Clojure's Principles to Its Culture w/ Tom McTighe
Roll back
| description |

Portland has a fairly lively Clojure ecosystem -- how can we leverage that base and become a hub of Clojure culture?
The biggest opportunity appears to be in helping newcomers connect the dots. The language was designed to be clear, consistent, practical, and empowering -- this talk will explore how we can apply those principles to support the local scene and create an onboarding model other groups can use.
Bring your gripes and ideas.
Bio:
New to the language and somewhat obsessed, Tom has worked as a writer, editor, and programmer. He hosts the Tuesday night Clojure Study Crew, and is currently building what he hopes will be the next best Clojure documentation tool. |

PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) Creating a Culture of Inclusion and Equity
Roll back
| description |
***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-creating-a-culture-of-inclusion-and-equity-tickets-45293162067] is required to gain entry to this event ***
Tech culture needs to change. All too often, underrepresented groups are marginalized and excluded as a result of implicit bias, often expressed through microaggressions. Creating a culture in which everyone experiences a sense of acceptance and belonging requires a collective commitment.
Changing the culture requires a lot of people making individual choices that actively tear down and confront everyday biases and microaggressions. Such work is difficult and takes practice. Lack of understanding, personality traits, friendships, professional goals and a fear of offending people all get in the way of confronting bias and its harmful effects.
Based on research and experience, “Creating a Culture of Inclusion and Equity” brings to light the impact of cultural bias and how to bring about change. Using concrete, typical scenarios, participants will learn about the relationship between implicit bias and the microaggressions that can surface. Participants will discover their own personal obstacles and identify and practice strategies to engage in culture change.
Biographies
The workshop is co-facilitated by Kristina Houck, LCSW and Tanya Crenshaw, PhD.

<h1>Intro to Scaled Agile Framework Agilist (SAFe) Training
Two Days Training</h1>
Join us for a two-day Scaled Agile Framework workshop on June 09th, 2018 and June 16th, 2018; featuring Jay Mittal PMP, CSM, CSPO, SA, SPC; an experienced Project and Product Manager, whose client list include many of the Fortune 500 companies, including Nike and Standard insurance in Portland, OR. Jay is a certified trainer for SAFe Scrum Master, SAFe Product Owner, and SAFe Agilist courses.
Blockbuster. Kodak. Tower Records. Nokia. Taxi Industry. Compaq. These companie were all iconic market leaders that couldn’t adapt to new business models and technology innovations ahead of their competitors. Our world is changing fast. Markets and consumers are demanding faster, cheaper, and better products. Demands for quicker turnaround on new product development and innovation have only increased. Enterprises must learn how to adapt quickly to these changing technologies and economic conditions or they will become extinct, no matter their size, smarts, or strength. This holds true even for businesses that don’t consider themselves Information Technology (IT) or software companies. Professional services, financial services, healthcare institutions, and government entities are all highly dependent on their ability to produce new technology-based products and services. How do companies like Google, Yahoo, Amazon, and Apple keep up? They practice agile techniques.
Come get a taste of the future of management and learn about SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework). This two day classroom training with exercises will cover the material from SAFe Agilist (SA) Certification program and is for executives, managers and Agile change agents who are responsible for leading a Lean/Agile change initiative in a large software enterprise.

After her time in the classroom, she wanted to explore a career that would allow her to bring together her love for creativity, science, and community and technology was just that! Crystal likes to call herself a “developing developer”, she’s a lifetime learner and is currently digging into JavaScript and Salesforce and fighting the patriarchy and imposter syndrome one key stroke at a time. PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) How to Study for a Technical Interview
Roll back
| description |
***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-how-to-study-for-a-technical-interview-tickets-45803234708] is required to gain entry to this event ***
Interviewing for a new job can be a stressful proposition. It is hard to know what to expect and even how to prepare for it. Each company evaluates its candidates differently. Luckily, some upfront investment and preparation can really go a long way in helping you distinguish yourself from the rest of the candidates. In this seminar led by an engineering leader at Elemental, we will cover some common interviewing practices for technical interviews and what you may be able to do to get ready. We plan to cover many beneficial topics:
• Morning preparation, attire, mindset
• Preparation for the non-technical parts
• How to study for the coding interview
• How to execute the coding test
Due to the level of interaction required, attendance will be capped at 20. Never fear: we will be organizing this same event bi-monthly because we want everyone to have access to this session!
Agenda:
5:00 PM: Doors open
5:15 PM: Introduction
5:30 PM: Session begins
6:30 PM: Session ends
Event FAQ:
Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms?
A: Yes
Q: Is the space ADA accessible?
A: Yes.
Q: Where there be food and drink at this event?
A: Yes, appetizers and nonalcoholic drinks will be provided.
Q: What is the parking situation?
A: No on-site parking available at this event.
Q: Is there secured bike parking?
A: No secured bike parking available at this event.
Q: Should I consider using public transportation?
A: Yes, taking public transportation to this event is recommended. The event is conveniently located near MAX and bus lines.
Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome. |
