April PMI Agile Round Table
Roll back
| description |

→ |
The PMI Agile Roundtable provides a forum for exchanging ideas, techniques and real world experiences (good and bad) in managing agile projects. Although sponsored by PMI, all roles and backgrounds are welcome and encouraged to participate / debate. We value the variety of perspectives and levels of experience with agile.
This Month we're honored to have Daniel Lynn present: Technical Consulting
Summary: What Is Technical Coaching?
All the best athletes teams have coaches. Musicians and singer? They have coaches too. If you’re a top-level executive at a Fortune 500 company, chances are you have a coach too. So what about the people building your products? Should they have coaches?
Coaching has really taken off over the past decade, but somehow our teams - the people who make the products that our companies live or die by - they’ve been left behind. In this talk we’ll discuss the what a technical coach does (and doesn’t do) and how to tell if your team could benefit from one.
About Daniel:
Daniel has been developing software for nearly two decades and has been working in agile teams for the last 10 years. More recently, he has worked with agile42 coaching teams on the adoption of agile practices both in code and across the organization, but his passion is still in writing great software and helping others do the same.
We will meet at:
The Standard
900 SW Fifth Ave,
Portland, OR 97204
Class Rooms 1 & 2
Meeting Rooms are on the lower level by OutTakes Cafe
Thanks to The Standard for providing space for this event

The MBA is partnering with the Technology Association of Oregon to host a hackathon focused on improving access to justice and services for self-represented litigants and the homeless.
<b>WHAT IS A HACKATHON?</b>
A hackathon is an event at which a large number of people meet to engage in a collaborative endeavor, splitting into teams and brainstorming new solutions to existing problems.
<b>COLLABORATE AND TAKE ACTION:</b>
This is a 2 day event. Will we kick off the event on Thursday May 17th with an introduction to the problems being worked on, networking, and team building. Friday May 18th, teams will work on the solutions to the problems before presenting their solution to a panel of legal and technical judges.
The hackathon will focus on improving accessibility and efficiency for access to homeless shelters and support services, pro bono volunteerism, and the new courthouse. There will be four problems teams can choose to work on:
<ol>
<li>Working with LASO to identify ways to harness technology to connect lawyers to pro bono opportunities; </li>
<li>Partnering with Transition Projects, Inc. to brainstorm about how an app or website can make it easier for homeless and people in transition can find shelter beds, meals, and other support services; </li>
<li>Working with a representative of the Multnomah County Courts to develop technology that helps self-represented litigants navigate the courthouse and legal system;</li>
<li>Partnering with a representative of the Multnomah County Courts to develop technology to assist those without limited or no financial resources in understanding where they need to be (and when) for court appearances, and assisting those individuals with transportation options and directions.</li>
</ol>

Roll back
| description |
***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-april-happy-hour-tickets-43860513978] is required to gain entry to this event ***
Join us for happy hour at Squarespace on April 17th.
Do you want to amplify your voice? We do too, so we are dedicating this event to being heard, which can be accomplished in a number of ways. To facilitate the conversation, the topic of the night is “how do you inject your voice into the workplace?”
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase three women in our community.
Introduction to Squarespace, including what they do and what job opportunities are available.
Emily Milburn, Technical Project Leader at Corvel, will encourage us to practice communication skills that elevate our assertive voice.
Tiffany Longworth, Site Reliability Engineer at Puppet, will talk about tactical and whimsical ways to leverage fun to get work done.
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
- An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
- Table Topics to help break the ice.
- A section for job seekers and our sponsors who are hiring, to ensure people get connected.
Agenda:
4:30 p.m. - Doors open/Networking
5:30 p.m. - Introductions, Announcements + Lightning Speakers
6:30 p.m. - Event ends
Event FAQ:

Q: Is the space ADA accessible?

Q: What is the parking situation?
A: Street parking and parking garage nearby (no free parking)
Q: Is there secured bike parking?

Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome.

***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-may-happy-hour-tickets-44921186478] is required to gain entry to this event ***
Join us for happy hour at Expensify on May 22nd.
There is always so much going on at work and in our personal lives. We are curious — how do you do it? This month we want to hear from you about balancing the stress of constant growth. We will spark the conversation with our prompt “How do you balance stress with self care?”
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase three women in our community.
Introduction to Expensify, including what they do and what job opportunities are available.
Deborah Ivanoff, Life Coach, will share how to prevent emotional programming from hijacking your life.
Judy Ossello, Senior Transition Manager at Nike, will talk about managing the stress of constant change, whether at work or home.
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
- An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for
Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
- Table Topics to help break the ice.
- A section for job seekers and our sponsors who are hiring, to ensure people get connected.
Agenda:
4:30 p.m. - Doors open/Networking
5:30 p.m. - Introductions, Announcements + Lightning Speakers
6:30 p.m. - Event ends
Event FAQ:
Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms?
A: Yes, on the 2nd, mezzanine and 3rd floors
Q: Is the space ADA accessible?
A: The building elevators are not up to ADA code (wheel in and turn around) but all of our floors are ADA. However getting to our floors via elevator is doable, just not up to code. Let us know if we should prepare for this.

A: Yes
Q: What is the parking situation?
A: No on-site parking
Q: Is there secured bike parking?
A: Yes

Trying to make a sale? Acquire a client? Find an investor? Pitch an idea to a company? Get published? Accomplishing any of these goals follows a path riddled with rejection. Constant rejection like that can be debilitating, leading to burn out and maybe even to giving up on your dream.
Rejection is universal, we all deal with it. It’s discouraging, but it doesn’t have to mean failure. We are going to teach you why we as humans have such a powerful reaction to rejection. More importantly, we will be teaching you the universal solution to not letting it negatively affect you, where you can instead use rejection to aid in your success.

Presented by: Dr. Kristin Tufte
This talk will describe work in Smart Cities in the Portland region. We’ll begin with the framework and motivation for the Smart Cities work and the question What is a Smart City? We’ll discuss Portland’s approach to Smart Cities, provide some historical context and then give an overview of ongoing Smart Cities projects including work on AV policy, the Portland Urban Data Lake, new sensors and earthquake resilience. The goal of the talk is to give the audience an overview of the work being done in Portland to bring a human face to data and technology and to inspire question and discussion.
Dr. Tufte is actively involved in Portland’s Smart Cities work and was the data lead on the City of Portland’s Smart Cities proposal. Dr. Tufte has collaborated closely with transportation agencies in the Portland-Vancouver area for the past ten years and directs PORTAL — the regional transportation data archive. Dr. Tufte is a member of the Transportation Research Board’s Urban Data Committee, co-chairing its Urban Big Data subcommittee and Portland Global Cities Team Challenge Action Cluster. Dr. Tufte has a PhD in Database Management from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Dr. Tufte’s passion is using data and technology to change people’s lives, especially those in traditionally underserved communities. |
