AeA: Energy Costs - Managing Today and Planning for the Future
Roll back
| description |
Finance Networking Event
Date: Nov 12, 2008
Please Note: This is the October 15th event that was postponed.
Energy Costs - Managing Today and Planning for the Future
Energy costs have increased dramatically over the past year and experts widely agree energy costs will become a key business consideration as worldwide demand continues to increase. Many supply-chain strategies are now obsolete as the landed cost of goods has risen sharply. The time is now to understand the trends, evaluate the impact on your business and develop an awareness of practices to avoid a setback in your business. Our panelists will discuss the trends we are seeing today and discuss strategies for addressing a changing business environment as it relates to energy. |

SAO: When to Hire/Who to Hire
Roll back
| description |
When to Hire/Who to Hire
Date: Wed, Oct 22nd
Time: 7:30am-9:00am
Location: The Governor Hotel 614 SW 11th Avenue Portland, OR 97205
Cost: $20 for members $60 for non members
Registration Deadline: 10/22/2008
Topic: When to Hire/Who to Hire

It's become common knowledge that Baby Boomers, Gen X & Gen Y, each have a different work style and life/work expectations. Join the CIO committee Wednesday, Oct 22nd at the Governor Hotel to learn how other CIO's and IT managers are dealing with the generational differences in hiring, retaining, and motivating these different groups of people.
Hear from Greg Kulander, local expert on the differences between the baby boomers, Generation X and Gen Y. Iris Sasaki, HR professional, who has more than 20 years of experience teaching and training managers how to hire and how to bridge the gap between generations, and Tim Kurlio, IT Manager for Multnomah County who prides himself on creating teams that function well together despite their innate differences. All moderated by Lance Kidd, CIO for Halton Company.
Iris Sasaki has been in the HR world for over twenty years beginning as a recruiter for Tektronix and retiring as an HR executive. Iris has managed her own HR consulting business since 2001.
Among the organization at which Iris has been a guest speaker are included the American Electronics Association, the law firm of Ater Wynne, Oregon Employment Division, and a guest lecturer from Oregon Graduate Institute. She is active as an "Expert in Residence" at the Open Technology Business Center and a mentor for the business concepts program of the Oregon Entrepreneurs Network. Iris created two training modules which were adopted by the Equal Opportunity Commission.
Iris' post graduate studies have focused on communication. She has published two articles on the web, the first with Business and Law Online, and the second with HR.com.
Greg Kulander, Ph.D. is Director of Student and Educator Services at the Business Education Compact. Dr. Kulander has extensive international experience and has researched and practiced cross-cultural communication for 25 years. Recently he has begun applying this cross-cultural expertise to the issues facing cross-generational communication. (And this interest has, of course, little to do with his having three teenagers!)
Tim Kurlio, IT Manager, Multnomah County
Tim Kurilo has worked in the technical field for 28 years. He is currently the Technical Services Manager at Multnomah County, Oregon. As a computer technician in the boom of the 90's, Tim realized how important it was to promote new opportunities yet retain experienced staff. He decided to join the ranks of management so he could help create an environment that nurtures the implementation and administration of new technologies, yet retains a quality of life for the staff.
Tim and his wife, Betsy, have successfully "blended" their very diverse families of eight children and 9 grandchildren. Learning the core values and motivations of each individual is just as important in the workplace as it is at home. One of Tim's favorite sayings is: "Technology is the easy part, once you get the team on the same page, the work just gets done".
Thank you to our 2008 Series Sponsors: ATSI Group, CSG Professional Services, EasyStreet , Online Business Systems, Stoel Rives, LLP.
Program Agenda:
7:30am-8:00am - Registration Breakfast
8:00am-8:40am - Presentation
8:40am-9:00am - Questions & Answers
Due to venue attendance guarantees, there will be an additional $5.00 added to your registration fee for the "Pay at the Door" option or to register on site.
Parking Information: Metered parking is available on the street on either Alder St. or 11th St. There is a SmartPark available on the corner of 10th and Yamhill for $1.25 per hour and you can enter the Governor Hotel through the Jake's entrance on 10th St.

<h2>IEEE Workshop on The Smart Grid - from Appliance to Generator and Back</h2>
Sponsors: IEEE Region 6 and Oregon Section
Co-Sponsored by Oregon Power and Energy and Computer Society Chapters
<b>Date: September 8, 2010</b>
Venue: Ambridge Event Center, Portland, Oregon; see <a href="http://www.ambridgeevents.com/">"www.ambridgeevents.com"</a>
<b>An IEEE Oregon âSmart Grid Weekâ (September 8-10) event</b>
<b>READ <a href="http://bit.ly/bQYhzE">"FULL PROGRAM DESCRIPTION PDF"</a></b>
A one day workshop with reception of how the Smart Grid provides interactions between the end uses of electricity ("appliances" or industrial processes) and utilities, viewed from the perspective of the technologies, standards, and policies that will enable those interactions and foster innovation and interoperability.
The Smart Grid marries the electrical grid, an extremely complex system based on mature, conservative technology, with two fast moving innovative technologies, computers and communications. It is one of the greatest electrical, electronic and information processing challenges of our time and represents a significant engineering opportunity over the next two decades and beyond. It captures information about supply, system demand, individual usage, and pricing that fundamentally shifts how electricity is used. It enables the operators of the power system to increase efficiency and reliability while reducing costs and empowering consumers of electricity to minimize their own electricity costs.
<b>Learning Objectives:</b>
Attendees will gain an understanding of the monitoring, communications, security and control systems of the Smart Grid, how they interact, the flow of data and control, and design and implementation considerations including:
</ul><li>Information requirements for optimal control of generating capacity, regional transmission grids, and municipal distribution grids to meet end user demands.</li>
<li>How generation, transmission and distribution control systems utilize digital information.</li>
<li>How suppliers and distributors of electricity use information to minimize costs while increasing reliability, flexibility, and security.</li>
<li>How usage monitoring and automation will allow end users to make informed decisions that reduce their electricity costs.</li>
<li>How to ensure grid security.</li>
<li>Balancing optimization of the gridâs subsystems and the grid as a whole.</li></ul>
<b>Target Audience:</b>

The panel will discuss parallelism, scale, data integrity, normalization, business logic, ORMs, and performance. Some of the following might be addressed:
* why do you want a relational DB?
* why do you not want a relational DB?
* Membase, MongoDB, Redis, Cassandra
* Tokyo Tyrant, CouchDB, old school K/V (zodb, bdb)
* distinctions between "relational" and "row store"
* how filesystem settings affect the database
* how important is your data?
* common errors in SQL schemas or usage
* is count(*) supposed to be fast?
* efficiency vs speed vs parallel cleverness
* sharding
* what is "scale" and do you need it?
* massively denormalized, or massively normalized?
* ORMs, materialized views, indexes, and the query planner
* typical performance with small/large, simple/complex data sets
As always, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the Lucky Lab.

READ "FULL PROGRAM DESCRIPTION PDF":http://bit.ly/bQYhzE
*Learning Objectives:*
Attendees will gain an understanding of the monitoring, communications, security and control systems of the Smart Grid, how they interact, the flow of data and control, and design and implementation considerations including:
⢠Information requirements for optimal control of generating capacity, regional transmission grids, and municipal distribution grids to meet end user demands.
⢠How generation, transmission and distribution control systems utilize digital information.
⢠How suppliers and distributors of electricity use information to minimize costs while increasing reliability, flexibility, and security.
⢠How usage monitoring and automation will allow end users to make informed decisions that reduce their electricity costs.
⢠How to ensure grid security.
⢠Balancing optimization of the gridâs subsystems and the grid as a whole.
*Target Audience:*
The target audience is engineers, policy makers, and entrepreneurs who want to understand the Smart Grid in order to make better professional, technical and business decisions.
*Prerequisites:*
Attendees should be generally familiar with the electric power system, software, or data communications concepts; a power engineering background is not required.
*Registration:*

Portland Linux/Unix Group: Server Sky - Data Centers in Orbit
Roll back
| description |
PRESENTATION
Server Sky - Data Centers in Orbit
Power for computation on a Moore's Law schedule
Keith Lofstrom, http://server-sky.com
The EPA estimates US data centers (not including desktops)
consumed 1.5% of total US electrical consumption in 2006.
They predict a doubling to 3% of base load by 2011. Our
work as programmers and technologists continues this
runaway exponential growth, and we will be stopped by
environmental and resource limits soon.
Server sky is a proposal to use newly emerging solid state
technologies to build large arrays of 3 gram paper-thin
solar-powered computation satellites in 6400km Earth orbits.
A single server-sat replaces 15 watts of ground-based
electrical generation, cooling, and power conversion, as
well as the computation and communication hardware itself.
Orbital server farms may start out as expensive as current
approaches, but design improvement and cheaper launch will
decrease costs exponentially over time, much as transistor
cost has plummeted over the last four decades.
This is open technology, responsive to public input, and
the project needs volunteer software and engineering help
to stay that way. Eventually, Server Sky will create
thousands of open technology jobs in the Portland area,
and permit unbounded computation growth in space, while
reducing energy demand and environmental damage on Earth.
Earth can return to what it is good at green and growing
things while we fill space with gray and computing things.
