This Tuesday at 6:30pm at Urban Airship we'll be celebrating October with the Second Annual PDX Python MODULE THUNDERDOOOOOME. We still don't really know what the rules are, but it was fun last year so we're doing it again. :)
In the Thunderdome ring so far we have: Nick Wilson, Dan Colish, Chris McDonald and Kyle Jones. Are you up for a round in the dome? Pick a module in stdlib or PyPI and bring a 5 minute Michel's Module of the Month-style presentation to the meeting. All are welcome to compete! If you want to make sure no one else is doing your module, let me know ([email protected] / @pythonchelle) what you're thinking and I'll find out.
After the module throw down, Rob Bednark has created a Python-themed trivia game for us to play!
*** New this year: The Dome is close-ish to Halloween, and some competitors have talked about dressing up like the module they're representing. Why not? Dressing up is fun, and fun things are fun. (Still not sure if a costume will affect the results.) I am going to wear my Halloween costume, which has nothing to do with Python or modules, but does include some fake blood and a couple props. Vision Planning for the Community-Minded

Vision planning for people who want to do something for a community.
Do you not yet have a vision statement written out, or would you like to tweak or revise? And do you say things like, "I'm hoping someone will want to contribute to my project: it is for the public good"? Then this workshop is for you.
Monday, October 17th, 7-9pm. Catherine Poole, Alex Linsker, and more coaches to be announced will lead this workshop. Last month we had 3 coaches and 9 participants. We're expecting more this time.
The main questions about your vision: Where are you coming from? What phrasing describes the reason why youâre doing this?
If related questions come up organically, weâll explore. These questions are where groups like âCollective Agencyâ started.
Whether a website, open source project, discussion group, visual art, nonprofit startup, or something else, the main focus of the people who show up will be for the benefit of a group or groups of people (the "community"). Weâll have fun and develop a vision planning community of our own.
In 2 hours we will meet-and-greet (go around and say what weâre working on and what weâd like to happen with it), have a brief overview, then invest most of the time in one-on-one coaching in 15 minute sessions.
This event is free of charge. Vision coaching is available here upon request with free and paid options.

Wiki-founder Ward Cunningham shared his idea of a Smallest Federated Wiki SFW during IndieWebCamp this June. In a few short weeks, he brought his idea to life and is inviting others to work with him on it. This is the second worksession for people interested in contributing to the project.
What is SFW?
The Smallest Federated Wiki project wants to be small in the âeasy to learn powerful ideasâ version of small. It wants to be a wiki so that strangers can meet and create works of value together. And it wants to be federated so that the burden of maintaining long-lasting content is shared among those who care.
As Ward says,
Our new wiki innovates three ways:
It shares through federation,
composes by refactoring and
wraps data with visualization.

Following in the tradition of Command Line, GUI, and NUI interface paradigms, first person interfaces continue to reduce the layers of abstraction between the digital and the real. With first person interfaces we can allow people to interact digitally with the real world as they are currently experiencing it. This allows people to navigate the space around them, augment their immediate surroundings, and interact with nearby objects, locations, or people.
First person interfaces enable people to interact with the real world through a set of âalways onâ sensors. Simply place a computing device in a specific location, near a specific object or person, and automatically get relevant output based on who you are, where you are, and who or what is near you.
The technology to make this happen is here today but these interfaces are in their infancy âthey need design help. They need designers to care and focus on this class of software.
About the Speaker
Luke Wroblewski is an internationally recognized digital product design leader who has designed or contributed to software used by more than 700 million people worldwide.
Luke is currently Chief Design Officer and co-founder of a stealth start-up. He is also an Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR) at Benchmark Capital. Prior to this, Luke was the Chief Design Architect (VP) at Yahoo! Inc. where he worked on product alignment and forward-looking integrated customer experiences on the web, mobile, TV, and beyond.
Luke is the author of two popular web design books, Web Form Design and Site-Seeing: A Visual Approach to Web Usability. He has also authored many articles about digital product design and strategy. He is also a consistently top-rated speaker at conferences and companies around the world, and a co-founder and former Board member of the Interaction Design Association (IxDA).

Vision planning for people who want to do something for a community.
Do you not yet have a vision statement written out, or would you like to tweak or revise? And do you say things like, "I'm hoping someone will want to contribute to my project: it is for the public good"? Then this workshop is for you.
Monday, October 17th, 7-9pm. Catherine Poole, Alex Linsker, and more coaches to be announced will lead this workshop. Last month we had 3 coaches and 9 participants. We're expecting more this time.
The main questions about your vision: Where are you coming from? What phrasing describes the reason why youâre doing this?
If related questions come up organically, weâll explore. These questions are where groups like âCollective Agencyâ started.
Whether a website, open source project, discussion group, visual art, nonprofit startup, or something else, the main focus of the people who show up will be for the benefit of a group or groups of people (the "community"). Weâll have fun and develop a vision planning community of our own.
In 2 hours we will meet-and-greet (go around and say what weâre working on and what weâd like to happen with it), have a brief overview, then invest most of the time in one-on-one coaching in 15 minute sessions.
This event is free of charge. Vision coaching is available here upon request with free and paid options.

Grounded in solid scientific data, this award winning presentation provides actionable steps to help you become happier and more productive at work. Various studies show that happier people are more productive, more creative, more insightful, more engaged, more resilient and healthier. This presentation covers dozens of techniques to increase job happiness, organized around themes of goals, relationships and attitude.
<h3>Presenter Bio</h3>
Scott Crabtree earned a B.A. in Cognitive Science from Vassar College in 1988. Immediately after, he worked on artificial intelligence, including expert systems software. Seeking more fun in his life, he started working at the first of several game development companies in 1996. Serving as a Software Engineer, Game Designer, Producer and Entrepreneur, Scott is proud to have worked on game development with companies including Microsoft, Mattel, Disney, LEGO and Nike. He’s published games for PS2, Xbox, PC and mobile phones, including the iPhone. He joined Intel in 2005 as an Engineering Manager focused on video game developers. He is currently Tech Strategist for Intel Atom Developer Program. He is fascinated by and passionately studies organizational development, human psychology and the science of happiness and well-being.
Scott lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife and 2 year old daughter. He loves spending time with them, especially in nature, and also enjoys playing with his band Mister Fisk.

Maseeh College growth plans included improving educational and research facilities by building a new engineering building in 2006, part of the Northwest Center for Engineering, Science and Technology.

We are an Oregon non-profit formed to help those interested in robots. Our monthly meetings are open to the public. Everyone is welcome.
We offer an active group of people building robots who are willing to help out anyone who also wants to learn about and build robots.
Meetings are the first Saturday of each month at 10:30 am, room 103 Engineering Building, Portland State University (SW 4th Ave & College St.). |
