The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday".</i> → 10gen: Intro to MongoDB and Schema Design One of the challenges that comes with moving to MongoDB is figuring how to best model your data. While most developers have internalized the rules of thumb for designing schemas for RDBMSs, these rules don't always apply to MongoDB. The simple fact that documents can represent rich, schema-free data structures means that we have a lot of viable alternatives to the standard, normalized, relational model. Not only that, MongoDB has several unique features, such as atomic updates and indexed array keys, that greatly influence the kinds of schemas that make sense. Understandably, this begets good questions: * Are foreign keys permissible, or is it better to represent one-to- many relations withing a single document? * Are join tables necessary, or is there another technique for building out many-to-many relationships? * What level of denormalization is appropriate? * How do my data modeling decisions affect the efficiency of updates and queries? In this session, we'll answer these questions and more, provide a number of data modeling rules of thumb, and discuss the tradeoffs of various data modeling strategies. <i>ABOUT THE GROUP: The Portland Ruby Brigade is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland Oregon area. All of a sudden an MRD becomes a “backlog”, software releases become “sprints”, requirements become “user stories” and new languages such as “estimating poker” and “fist to five” start creeping into meetings. A successful transition also requires that Product Management behaves differently to leverage the benefits of Agile. Vivian Hua In 2005, I started a publication called REDEFINE, which began with no particular focus. It grew to become a music and arts publication dedicated to covering lesser-known and independent musicians. In the past year (2011), a series of extraordinary [personal] circumstances has led to the complete thematic and conceptual overhaul of REDEFINE. The music industry is not even close to what it was in 2005, and the site's new mission, moving forward, is one that I hope will be predictive of changes to come in the industry. Sara Mirk - Oregon History Comics In 2009, I started on what I thought would be a quick, fun educational project: Creating 10 small comic books about Oregon’s history. My friends, myself, and the majority of Portland didn’t grow up in the state, so researching and writing these comics was a way to help build understanding of our surroundings in a relevant, accessible medium. Local arts and culture nonprofit theDill Pickle Club joined on as a collaborator and over the past two years we’ve raised $2,500, hired nine local artists, and published six of the ten comics. The box set of comics is finally being released this March 5th at Powell’s! Ezra Spier - Where Coffee Comes From Ezra has traveled far and wide, to plantations in South America and Africa, to see every step of the process of making coffee. Follow one of our favorite beverages from berries on the plants to our greedy, greedy mouths.

Who better to judge whether or not Apple has succeeded at its goal than Mobile Portland alum and Textbook 3.0 advocate Corey Pressman. In August 2010, Corey participated in a panel talking about using mobile technology in education. Corey talked about his efforts to convince textbook publishers to start to see the iPhone and the iPad as the foundation for an entirely new form of textbooks. He talked about both the learning theory behind why a digital textbook would be more successful as well as what would make them fun for students. And he did it all as one of our more compelling and funny speakers. So it makes sense to bring him back to talk about what iBooks 2.0, iBooks Author, and iTunes U means for students, teachers, and textbook publishers. Like nearly every Apple announcement, the iBooks Author announcement wasn’t without controversy—license restrictions and modification of the ePub format into a proprietary iBooks file format are at the top of the list.
