update Calagator::Event 1250463996 Portland Ruby Brigade monthly meeting Roll back

description Thanks to CrowdCompass for hosting Ruby meetings every Tuesday! PRESENTATIONS * Kerri Miller: You Can't Miss What You Can't Measure<br> Adrift at sea, a GPS device will report your precise latitude and longitude, but if you don't know what those numbers mean, you're just as lost as before. Similarly, there are many tools that offer a wide variety of metrics about your code, but other than making you feel good, what are you supposed to do with this knowledge? Let's answer that question by exploring what the numbers mean, how static code analysis can add value to your development process, and how it can help us chart the unexplored seas of legacy code. * David Celis and Ben Weintraub talk about interesting performance issues. * ...and lots of great group discussions on Ruby-related topics. <i>ABOUT THE GROUP: The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. create Calagator::Event 1250464322 SPIN: Still Programming After All These Years Roll back

description nil Networking @ 5:30-6:30 PM; Seminar 6:30-7:30 PM Abstract: Anyone who has seen a few generations of computer technology knows that each generation brings in a whole new vocabulary. It seems like the same old thing but with all of the names changed. Why do they do that? It helps us get unstuck. That's the short answer. Each generation brings with it unfamiliar capabilities. It takes serious effort to find application for those capabilities and hiding the good stuff among the familiar just makes doing new things harder. In this presentation I'll describe my own lurch forward over the last two years. The web, which has been stuck in its own way, has busted free. Its a great time to try something new. Some of this is technology, some methodology, and some community. All of it impresses me. Let me tell you why it's important. Bio: Ward Cunningham programs every day at New Relic. He continues to develop the unique data handling capabilities of Federated Wiki, a project rooted in his service as Nike's open-data fellow. Ward co-founded the consultancy, Cunningham & Cunningham, Inc. He has served as CTO at CitizenGlobal and AboutUs, a Director of the Eclipse Foundation, an Architect in Microsoft's Patterns & Practices Group, the Director of R&D at Wyatt Software and as Principle Engineer in the Tektronix Computer Research Laboratory. Ward is well known for his contributions to the developing practice of object-oriented programming, the variation called Extreme Programming, and the communities supported by his WikiWikiWeb. Ward hosts the AgileManifesto.org. He is a founder of the Hillside Group and there created the Pattern Languages of Programs conferences which continues to be held all over the word. description nil Rather than posting content on many third-party silos of data, we should all begin owning our own data that we're creating. Publish short status updates on your own domain, and syndicate to Twitter. Publish photos on your own domain, syndicate to Flickr, etc, etc. This is the basis of the "Indie Web" movement. We'll get together for two days to talk about what has been done in the field, and where still needs to be done. There will be workshops and breakout sessions the second day. create Calagator::Event 1250464319 Pi in the Sky: How Computer Vision can give a Quadcopter Autonomous Flight Roll back

description nil Five students in PSU’s Electrical and Computer Engineering Senior Capstone sequence want to show you what they’ve created: an inexpensive computer vision system for a quadcopter running on a Raspberry Pi board. One might be surprised how simple it is to code a decent object tracking algorithm using open-source software, and how difficult it is to keep a quadcopter from crashing into the wall in the debug stage. This talk should appeal to the RC hobbyist, the embedded systems programmer, and anyone interested in the art of computer vision. The presentation will include video footage of what these students have accomplished and how they pulled it off.

update Calagator::Event 1250464316 PSU Tech Talk: Using Graphics Processors for everything but Graphics Roll back

description Back in 2001, researchers decided to try to use "the other" processor in their PC (the graphics card) for computation. These early, tedious efforts were promising and lead to a new type of computation called General Purpose GPU (GPGPU) Computing. NVIDIA vastly accelerated such efforts with the release of CUDA in 2007, that provided a much simpler interface to programmers wanting to use the GPU for general computation. Today, GPUs are being used to accelerate some of the most powerful supercomputers in the world (see top500.org). In this talk I'll describe the ideas behind this very different kind of computing, show some simple CUDA examples, and mention the open source alternative to CUDA (OpenCL). I'll give a bit more detail on our newly acquired NVIDIA K20, and briefly outline my GP-GPU Computing course for summer 2013. Bio: Dr. Karavanic is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Portland State, where she teaches courses in Operating Systems, performance measurement and modeling, and High Performance Computing. She was selected as an HPC Educator for the SC2012 Conference, where she offered a full-day tutorial on CUDA to faculty from around the U.S. Dr. Karavanic came to PSU in 2000 from Madison, Wisconsin, where she earned an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Computer Science.
