create Calagator::Event 1250464370 Get Started: Portland's Creative Community and the Startup Scene Roll back

description nil Portland has hit the radar: Business Week has noted the stunning growth of our tech scene. Local start-ups are actually being funded fueling awareness and rivaling Portland’s larger competitors (like San Francisco). The fuel for the fire? Accelerators (PIE: Portland Incubator Experiment) in partnership with leading brands, technology innovators, and trend setting local agencies (Wieden+Kennedy); Upstart Labs is helping grow local companies Chirpify and Celly; and the Nike+ Accelerator is powering TechStars and Nike. PAF’s GET STARTED gives you a front-row seat by bringing together the leaders of PIE, Upstart and Nike+ Accelerator. Unearthing the magic behind growing startups, they’ll outline how advertising and digital agencies can and are providing guidance and support to bring companies to life. You’ll learn how your agency/company can participate in this trend and how you’ll benefit and grow from your own tech chops alongside your startup partners.

create Calagator::Event 1250464369 Portland Perl Mongers – Simple Questions Should Have Simple Answers + pdx.pm governance Roll back

description nil speaker: MichaelSchwern If a developer ever says “it’s really simple”, run and do not look back. Developers often throw around terms like “easy” and “obvious” but what do they tell them about what to do to make something “easier” and “more obvious”? What does it tell them about whether somebody else will find something “easy” and “obvious”? Not a lot. Giving simple questions simple answers tells how to take action to make things easier and more obvious to the casual user. Embracing the task of providng simple answers rejects the fallacy that complex implementations mean complex answers. It creates a new relationship of respect between the user and the developer; a good user can ask a simple question illuminating what people want to do, and a good developer fulfills the user’s desire for a simple answer. What does it mean to be simple? * How do you find it? * What are its benefits? * What happens when you don’t seek simplicity? ### pdx.pm governance Before the presentation, we'll have a short discussion about the future of the monthly group meetings as Eric Wilhelm is no longer able to be the sole organizer. As usual, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the Lucky Lab Brew Pub.

update Calagator::Event 1250464072 OEN's Entrepreneurial Summit: The Entrepreneurs Journey Roll back

description From tech to food and onto science, our region's entrepreneurs are developing ideas and companies that are making a difference from both an economic development standpoint and the betterment of the society we live in. The journey from an idea or concept to actually getting your company up and running is never an easy one. It's one that is filled with ups and downs, victories and defeats, but the one thing that all of these entrepreneurs share is a passion for what they are trying to build or create. OEN's Entrepreneurial Summit is your opportunity to discover and learn about the incredible collection of entrepreneurs, across all industries that are making things happen in Oregon. These entrepreneurs all have a passion and belief in what they have built, but their journeys will both inspire and spark ideas within you. D'Wayne Edwards with Pensole Shoe Design Academy, Anna Martens with FreeRangePDX/Leatherman and Mat Ellis with Cloudability are just a few of the great speakers that are lined up for the event. As many of these entrepreneurs will attest, they couldn't have done it on their own. To that end, after the talks have completed, OEN is hosting an"Entrepreneurs Journey" trade show. The trade show will include the organizations, accelerators, universities and government resources that provide the support, mentorship and potential funding for entrepreneurs. Mikey will be explaining how a little bit of embedded hardware can empower anyone to leave their day jobs and focus on the interests. Projects such as grease car temperature displays, irrigation moisture monitors, pulsed LED growlights, using machines to build with trash, fermentation controllers and recovering different battery chemistries. Mikey is a open hardware developer who has been selling kits and has worked for Adafruit, Hack-a-Day, and Popular Science. This will be his fifth dorkbot presentation. #Blending art, nature, and mechanics ##presented by Stephanie Simek http://stephaniesimek.com/ Stephanie will be speaking about some of her recent art projects involving light, sound, and electrical components. She'll talk about her interest with combining disparate materials and pushing the limits of their inherent functional capabilities, like playfully incorporating circuitry with handwriting and the movements of Venus Flytraps. She'll also discuss her newest project, a crystal radio sculpture. Other topics to be covered include: synchronized swimming, the Golden Record, non-Newtonian lovers, and Cab Calloway. Stephanie Simek has been living in Portland for 6 years, where she has been creating experiments with sound, performance, and sculpture. Throughout the month of June, Place Gallery will be exhibiting her most recent project, Radio Room. #Opendork ##You! An open-mic session for those looking to show off a project, ask a question, solicit help, or incite collaboration.

create Calagator::Event 1250464352 Dependent Types meetup Roll back

description nil David Christiansen (a major Idris committer) is going to be in town for a bit - thought we'd have some folks into programming in dependently-typed languages (e.g. Idris, Agda, Coq) get together while he's here.
