Hacking Social Impact Unconference - Portland
Roll back
| description |

→ |
This November, the Social Venture Society will host the second Hacking Social Impact unconference, a collaborative and educational event addressing impact investment and social entrepreneurship. As in 2012, the two-day event will feature hands-on workshop, interactive discussion sessions, and networking.
Participants will not only have the opportunity to bring their ideas to the table, but to engage in direct, powerful and informal discussions on the topics which will shape the socially-driven entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist.
An unconference is a participant-driven meeting, popular among technology and social media-influenced communities, in which information sharing is collaborative and dynamic.
Last year, we had a tremendous experience hosting impact community members and learning with and from folks from Ecotrust, Immix Law, Springboard Innovation, B Labs, Grameen Foundation, Mercy Corps Micro Mentor, p:ear, PSU Impact Entrepreneurs, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Social Venture Partners, Startup America, and many more.
Schedule & Details:
On Monday night (5:30 - 8:00), we will have a kickoff reception at MercyCoprs.
Tuesday will be a full day of sessions, workshops, connecting, discussing, and hacking, held at the Eliot Center from 9:00-5:00.
For more details and updates, visit http://socialventuresociety.org/unconference/.

Oregon Computer Consultants' Association Monthly Meeting
Obamacare 101: How does it work and what can it do for me?
Program
There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and discuss practical problems. Among the topics that will be covered are:
* What do we need to know about the new healthcare law?
* Who can get premium subsidies and how do I qualify?
* What are the tax ramifications for individuals receiving subsidies?
* How do I get the information I need from the CoverOregon Site?
* What are the basic things to consider to make sure I'm protected while not paying more than I need to?
* How do I interpret the details shown on CoverOregon, like understanding whether the deductible covers both drugs and medical services, or is treated separately for each?
Speaker
Ray Armstrong is the CEO of InsuranceNW. He is an entrepreneur and independent health insurance broker, licensed across the country, as well as a certified agent for CoverOregon, WashingtonHealthplanFinder & CoveredCalifornia. Ray has knowledge far beyond the average local agent and specializes in helping the self-employed out of compassion for the small businessman and families trying to make ends meet. He creates custom plans for each client by utilizing his nationwide access to dozens of insurance companies to create a plan to best meet his clients health needs as well as budget.

6:20--7:00 No-host dinner
7:00--7:30 Introductions and announcements
7:30--8:30 Main Presentation (followed by Q&A)

Portland Ruby Brigade monthly meeting
Roll back
| description |

** Our Nov & Dec 2013 meetings will be at New Relic instead of our usual location, CrowdCompass **
Pre-Meeting Dinner at 6pm: Stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations.
PRESENTATIONS at 7pm
Beer & Snacks at 9pm: After presentations we'll have more socializing time with beer & snacks.
ARRIVING BY BIKE?
Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 28th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the tool booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." Go in there, and ride on up to the 28th floor. You'll easily find the bike parking.
Thanks to New Relic for hosting this month!
ABOUT THE GROUP: The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the mailing list. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there!

Portland Linux/Unix Group: Samba 4
Roll back
| description |
Brian P. Martin will talk about his early experiences with Samba 4
Samba provides open-source support for the Microsoft file sharing protocol. Version 4 of Samba was released late last year. It represented years of work and a major, some would say massive upgrade to Samba to include the ability to be a fully functional Active Directory server. Given the large scale changes, many people have been avoiding production Samba 4 use while waiting for the bugs to be worked out. Brian Martin has now started migrating production environments to Samba 4 and will discuss his early experiences.
Bio:
Brian Martin is the chief consultant for Martin Consulting Services, Inc. Martin Consulting has provided system administration services in Unix, Linux and Windows systems in the Portland metro area and across the country since 1996. Brian is a frequent attendee at PLUG. His past presentations include VMWare, production grade scripting, disaster recovery experiences, Linux containers, and logical volume management.
Many attendees will break for a social hour at the Lucky Lab Brew Pub NW at 1945 NW Quimby

Some of you might know the ever crafty Sara Collins, we talked her into heading up a Terrarium series for Nov. craft nights at PAZ.
Sara is bringing extra supplies by donation. If you don't have a glass container we will have some extra we got from bins by donation, just let us know so we have enough.
Most of all this will be fun and crafty. So bring your happy face and tiny plants.
If you have old records bring them by, as a few people just hangout and play games listening to records.

Portland Autonomous Zone formed in Jan. 2013 and aims to be a hub for bike fun and DIY sub-culture. It’s a place to create just about anything from welding to recording studio. We have 5 workbenches now (3 in garage, 1 electronic bench, and a sewing bench! Something like a Moose Lodge for makers with focus on bikes. It’s not a for profit business, somebody’s house, or run by a bike club. It’s a members supported space and run by members. Members can go at any hour and turn on an air compressor, cut metal, hammer, or just listen to your music loud while you get bike crafty. We even have a shower, kitchenette, 2 bathrooms, and are close-in. |
