create Calagator::Event 1250469660 Running Serverless Clojure Applications with AWS Lambda w/ Dan Anolik Roll back

description nil Clojure on AWS Lambda is like the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup of the functional programming world. Lambda gives you an easy way to run your functions in the cloud without needing to provision or manage any servers. It's also really cheap and extremely scalable. In this short presentation we'll walk through building and deploying a Clojure microservice using only AWS Lambda and API Gateway. We'll also discuss ways that your Lambda functions could support larger applications in an AWS environment. Bio: Dan Anolik has been doing a mix of software development and solutions architecture in the Portland area for over 19 years. He has worked as a consultant for building cloud native applications and is a fairly recent convert to Clojure. Away from the keyboard Dan plays mandolin in a bluegrass band and has been a long-time wilderness search and rescue volunteer.

description nil WHAT YOU'LL LEARN - The three types of Professional Services firm and the management at each - The emphasis that clients and employees put on values and culture - Using your influence, passion, and vision to lead the organization We will also have a live thirty-minute Q&A period after the presentation. This webinar series is a world-first: a dedicated professional services manager course with a dedicated focus on management—this exclusivity of focus is designed to strip away the redundant training that comes with other options, such as the MBA: - Eight 90 minute webinars covering the fundamentals of professional services management - Topics include areas such as estimates, engagement scheduling and KPIs - Available to watch online on all internet web browsers About Kayne McGladrey I have always had the good fortune of not being the smartest person in the room. Much of my understanding of professional services management has come from mentoring by the vice presidents and senior partners I had worked with over the years. I am fortunate to be currently working with one of the three most influential mentors in my career. However, many of the hundreds of consultants and former professional services managers I have spoken with have identified a lack of available training to manage a professional services organization. I believe that the only way to demonstrate mastery of a skill is to teach someone else. I regularly write about my experience managing a worldwide professional services organization.

create Calagator::Event 1250469652 Investing in Justice Roll back

description nil ###There's been a recent shift in how activists are trying to bring about social change, and SJF is at the forefront of this shift. ##Come find out how you can get involved! [This article](http://www.guerrillafeminism.org/the-entrepreneurial-activist-raushan-bhuiyan/) has a great breakdown on this new trend of entrepreneurial activism: *For some activists, being entrepreneurial has meant the following things: treating their activist work like a business, turning to popular social media platforms to put out their own press releases and looking for people to invest in their initiative with money and not just good faith.* More about the hosting organizations: Social Justice Fund Northwest is a foundation working at the frontlines of social change. They leverage the resources of their members to foster significant, long-term social justice solutions throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana & Wyoming. PDXNALTA is a networking group for underrepresented people of color in tech. Idealist is all about connecting idealists - people who want to do good - with opportunities for action and collaboration. With more than 100,000 organizations and 1.4 million monthly visitors to our English, Spanish & French sites, Idealist helps people move from intention to action all over the world.

description nil Make it here! Have some projects you'd like to work on, but could benefit from a creative atmosphere? Cat and Watershed PDX team up to offer just the space! We will supply wifi, and a place to share ideas and collaborate with a community of fellow creators and makers. We'll share tips and tricks, and support your creative endeavors! The goal for the meetup is to support the local creative scene while providing an opportunity for people to build a network with people of varied skills. Makers, crafters, and creators of all ages, skill levels, and backgrounds are encouraged to bring your projects, supplies, and ideas. From sewing to electronics to art projects, this will be an incubator for interesting collaborations. For example, if someone comes in to work on an embroidery project, another could show them how to incorporate conductive thread and LEDs to make that project light up. Tips and tricks that can be shared varied depending on who comes to the event. Things shared at previous events include working with Arduino, programming, sculpting, knitting, hand sewing, misc hobbyist electronics tips from component suppliers to soldering tricks. All attendees will need to sign-in with Cat before entering the meetup space. All information will be kept confidential. By attending this event you agree that neither Watershed nor myself is liable for any injury you may receive while working on your project, and that you will follow the Code of Conduct.

update Calagator::Event 1250469450 Portland Linux/Unix Group Advanced Topics Roll back

description Portland Linux/Unix Group Advanced Topics Topic to be announced! Portland Linux/Unix Group Advanced Topics Who: Roundtable discussion, moderated by Brian Martin and Michael Dexter
What: Smarter S.M.A.R.T. and related storage challenges
Where: Free Geek, 1731 SE 10th Avenue, Portland (Left Entrance)
When: Tuesday, January 19th, 2016 at 7pm
Why: The pursuit of technology freedom
Stream: http://pdxlinux.org/live/
We are addicted to storage devices like hard and solid state disks. Modern computing begins with storage and could survive quite some time without the computing part, as demonstrated by past storage devices like the Rosetta Stone for which we struggle to decode. This means HDD's and SSD's are reliable, right? Alas, they are not. In fact the situation is somewhat terrifying. File systems have made significant progress in the last decade but remarkably, there are still significant issues surrounding the devices they inhabit. Storage devices are inconsistent, to put it politely, about notifying the user of existing, potential and impending problems. Built-in, standard-ish reporting mechanisms like S.M.A.R.T. exist but pose as many challenges as they address. Some storage "health" monitoring data is straight-forward, some is not: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDacjrSCeq4 Bring your storage-related questions, war stories and gadgets! Many will head to the Lucky Lab at 915 SE Hawthorne Blvd. after the meeting. Rideshares Available PLUG is open to everyone and does not tolerate abusive behavior on its mailing lists or at its meetings.

create Calagator::Event 1250469646 Portland Seed Fund Pitch for a Beer Roll back

description nil You have a big idea, maybe even a co-founder. But you'd like a second opinion before you sever all ties to paid employment, loved ones and regular meals. Time to Pitch for a Beer and get frank and fast feedback from Portland Seed Fund managers! How it works: First 50 to arrive get in free with an elevator pitch to the bouncer. Those who want to pitch PSF simply drop their names in a hat. 12 names will be drawn for 5-min power sessions with PSF managers Jim Huston, Angela Jackson and Jenn Lynch. Ringler booths will be filled with other PSF alumni and mentors, so you will garner additional feedback from great sources even if your name didn't get drawn. Everyone gets a beer ticket (and pizza). No RSVP required. Doors will be closed after first 50 in.

create Calagator::Event 1250469645 Portland Panel: ISO 26262 – For Automotive and Beyond Roll back

description nil Interested in the way ISO 26262 will affect automotive electronic design and compliance? Or how this standard might impact other industries, such as the semiconductor market? Listen what the experts have to say. Third Annual Portland State Univ. (PSU) Systems Engineering Forum Date: Thursday, Jan. 21, 2016 Time: 5:30pm (registration); 6pm (panel discussion); 7pm (networking) with drinks/snacks hosted by Jama Software Location: Jama Software, 135 SW Taylor St #200, Portland, OR 97204 Parking: Close to MAX line (Yamhill District Stop); several public parking garages RSVP: Forum is free to all technical professionals but limited to 100 participants. Please RSVP via Eventbite. Description: ISO 26262 addresses the needs for an automotive-specific standard that deals with the functional safety of hardware-software electrical/electronic/programmable safety critical systems. In alignment with good system engineering practices, ISO 26262 uses a system of steps to manage functional safety and regulate product development throughout the lifecycle on today’s hardware and software integrated systems. Specifically, this standard details how to assign an acceptable risk level to a system or component and document the overall testing process. What impact will this standard have on automotive electronic design, V&V and testing? What new tools might be needed for safety requirements tractability and risk management? How will compliance be handled? Will this standard set a precedence and framework – especially for simulation lifecycle management and V&V flows – for other industries such as the semiconductor market? These are some of the questions that a panel of experts will address from a tool vendor, designer, V&V engineer and end user point of viewpoints. Please join us for a lively discussion followed by a networking session with drinks and snacks. Panelist: Bill Chown, CIO INCOSE and Product Director, System-Level Engineering, Mentor Graphics Derwyn Harris, Jama Software Co-Founder and Product Manager Mike Bucala, Lead Engineer – Vehicle Systems Quality, Daimler Trucks NA Ryan Slaugh, Project Engineer, Pacific NW Laboratories (PNNL) John Blyler (Moderator), JB Systems
