create Calagator::Event 1250469885 Learn about Advanced Data Visualization - Data Management PDX March Chapter Meeting Roll back

description nil After a review of our previous meeting about the basics of Data Visualization (Dec. 2012) we will explore some of the more complex issues of expressing complex business behavior in graphic form. You do not need to have attended the basics presentation to get value from this advanced presentation. Included in this session are the five basic chart types, along with topics of normalization and the importance of context. We will then look at more advanced concepts for the expression of metrics (such as cartograms, step functions, metrics which go negative, non-linear scales, and lineage charts). We will discuss the importance of understanding volatility in a metric, and the expression of uncertainty and ambiguity. Rankings can be misleading; we will show how. Tree maps are useful, but heat maps can be dangerous. We may look at using scatter diagrams to evaluate the correlation of market indexes. If we have time, we will look at the expression of non-metric ideas, including VENN diagrams. <h3>About the Speaker</h3> Michael Scofield, M.B.A. is an Asst. Professor of Health Informatics at Loma Linda University. His experience includes banking, manufacturing, higher education, and software development. create Calagator::Event 1250469884 Global Perspectives for Global Leaders 1 day Primer by Ten Directions Roll back

description nil We often fail to get along because we don’t understand each other. Especially when we assume our worldviews are the same. That we differ is obvious. But the more interesting question is how—and why? When you care about helping people to get along, work together, collaborate, or make decisions, you need to be able recognize and work with different perspectives. It’s an essential leadership competency in today’s diverse and interconnected world. When facing complex challenges like cultural differences and leadership struggles, understanding world views can be the key that brings people together. In this 1-day live training, you will learn: - How people and groups develop over time, and why this impacts worldviews. - The major characteristics of each of the four primary worldviews. - Which liabilities and strengths typify each stage. - How to work with different stages in other people. - How your own worldview shapes your thinking and actions. Our integrative, applied professional training programs, bring a unique wisdom to the adult transformative learning environment. Our approach is embodied, pragmatic, dynamic and sophisticated. Our Ten Directions' programs are delivered globally - Mountainview CA (Google), Berlin, Stockholm, Austin, New York, Salt Lake City, Amsterdam, San Diego, Vancouver etc. This is our first time in Portland!

create Calagator::Event 1250469881 Learn how to be more skillful with people - Coaching to Excellence - May 11-12. 2016 Roll back

description nil New Ventures West is a San Francisco based coach training school that has been developing the methodology of Integral Coaching for 30 years. Our clients include Google, Facebook, Intel, Genentech, Apple, and Cisco. Coaching to Excellence is a two day workshop for people who are interested in exploring coaching as a career, and for those who are simply interested in being more skillful in relationships at work and in the rest of life. Whether or not your end goal is to be a coach, the competencies of coaching - which include active listening, asking powerful questions, and cultivating an aware presence - can be applied to whatever your work is in the world, whether that is being a parent, a leader, a teammate, a spouse, a citizen, a manager, etc. Integral Coaching is a developmental methodology that invites clients to orient to their situation in a new way, so that new opportunities and possibilities are seen, and more powerful interpretations can be made. Integral Coaching teaches us how to hold space that is more powerful, for ourselves and others, so that we can ask the following questions: -How can I help build resilience in myself, my staff, and the people we serve? -How can I help people face tough questions about the future with curiosity and courage? -What are the talents and qualities that are uniquely mine in responding to global challenges? -What can I do to have more powerful conversations with people to open possibility? -How am I to respond when I feel uncertain, unsure, and full of grief, and yet people are relying on me? -Is it possible to live in a way that generates aliveness when the obstacles facing me seem insurmountable? During these two days you will both coach and be coached, and learn exciting techniques and tools that you can immediately apply to your work in the world. This class also functions as the prerequisite to our year-long Professional Coaching Course. Please be in touch with your questions and reflections. description nil Speaker: Winston Saunders Abstract: Word vectors, derived by deep learning algorithms applied to billions of words of text, provide powerful semantic models of language. Code in R, demonstrating [queen] + [man] - [woman] ~ [King] to about 90% accuracy will be reviewed. Building first on exploratory "bag of words" analysis of Presidential debate texts, we'll explore, using pre-computed GloVe vectors (Pennington et al http://nlp.stanford.edu/projects/glove/), relationships like [sanders] + [trump] - [clinton] ~ [cruz] and how candidate positions align to rhetorical sentiment like [government] + [people] - [tax]. This analysis is work in progress. We'll also test empirical limits (aka failed experiments). Active feedback is both sought and welcome. Details: Doors open ~6 pm, talk starts at 6:30 pm Doors are open at bottom, take elevator to 3rd floor, door should be open for suite 320 We'll visit a local watering hole afterwards.

description nil At this West Side PubTalk(TM) we’ll discuss how do you fund a startup when the resources of the founders and friends and family run out? There are angel investors and venture capital firms, but they aren’t the only sources of funding for startups, and they are often not the right fit. Fortunately, there are other options. Some of those options are: Seed funds in Oregon invest anywhere from $10,000 to $250,000 in startups. Banks will make loans to small businesses – but the business does have to meet some key requirements. The federal SBIR program can provide $1 million in grant funding or more At this West Side PubTalk, you’ll learn more about all three of these sources from a panel that has experience in each of these three types of funding.

Have some projects you'd like to work on, but could benefit from a creative atmosphere? <a href="https://cacophonouscreations.wordpress.com/">Cat</a> and <a href="http://watershedpdx.com/">Watershed PDX</a> team up to offer just the space! We will supply wifi, and a place to share ideas and collaborate with a community of fellow creators and makers. We'll share tips and tricks, and support your creative endeavors! The goal for the meetup is to support the local creative scene while providing an opportunity for people to build a network with people of varied skills. Makers, crafters, and creators of all ages, skill levels, and backgrounds are encouraged to bring your projects, supplies, and ideas. From sewing to electronics to art projects, this will be an incubator for interesting collaborations. For example, if someone comes in to work on an embroidery project, another could show them how to incorporate conductive thread and LEDs to make that project light up. Tips and tricks that can be shared varied depending on who comes to the event. Things shared at previous events include working with Arduino, programming, sculpting, knitting, hand sewing, misc hobbyist electronics tips from component suppliers to soldering tricks. All attendees will need to sign-in with Cat before entering the meetup space. All information will be kept confidential. By attending this event you agree that neither Watershed nor myself is liable for any injury you may receive while working on your project, and that you will follow the <a href="https://cacophonouscreations.wordpress.com/workshops/code-of-conduct/">Code of Conduct</a>.

update Calagator::Event 1250469830 PdxDevOps Roll back

description Join us for the Feburary meeting of PdxDevOps. Agenda: 1) Overview of Nix and NixOS by Corbin Simpson (Acquia) (second try) [Nix](http://nixos.org/nix/) is a package manager designed to perfectly isolate dependencies and yield reproducible builds. The [NixOS Linux distro](http://nixos.org/) is built on top of Nix. We'll look at how Nix relates to the modern devops environment and how it can simplify continuous integration and configuration management. 2) "Creating Efficient Dockerfiles" by Isaac Stefanek Docker can do many great things for the continuous integration and delivery process. One of the benefits that can be achieved using Docker is speeding up build and deploy times. Creating Docker files that maximize this benefit can take some work, especially if you are dealing with a bloated technology stack. We'll take a look at some common best practices that will have your Docker builds running at warp speed. The examples will be focused on building NodeJS applications, but many of the concepts will be universal for any Dockerized app. pdxdevops is a Portland, Oregon user group that explores the glorious intersection of software development and systems operations, and shares practical advice on working effectively in an era of agile infrastructure, server automation and cloud computing. The group welcomes participants interested in any related products, technologies and methodologies. The group has been meeting regularly since August 2010 for presentations, demos and discussions applicable to all skill levels, from newbies and experts. Every month 15-35 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for devops – join us! Join us for the Feburary meeting of PdxDevOps. create Calagator::Event 1250469865 Code Oregon Labs: Animating Websites Roll back

description nil Code Fellows invites online learners of all stripes to Code Oregon Labs! Last month we focused on coding for responsive websites, now let’s make ‘em dance! Gaston Figueroa of Uncorked Studios will kick off this month's session with a demo on coding for animation. The 30 min. talk/demo will focus on HTML, CSS, & JavaScript. Tutors are knowledgeable in these and other stacks. After the animation demo, it'll be open lab as usual! Together with Code Oregon and generous volunteers from the #pdxtech community, Code Fellows is happy to host this event. Each month, our goal is a 6:1 tutor-to-learner ratio, and we provide free pizza and beverages.
