In this session, we’ll discuss how we got into product management, the successful paths we’ve seen for others and how we’ve coached others seeking to make this transition. We will also discuss some common pitfalls to avoid when moving from another discipline.
Agenda:
5:00 p.m. - Doors open
5:30 p.m. - Introduction, with a few words about Skyward
5:40 p.m. - Talk: How to Transition into Product
Mariah Scott, President, Skyward (a Verizon Company)
Susannah Axelrod, VP Product Management, Skyward (a Verizon Company)
Additional speakers TBA

Introducing "Placemaking in the Digital Age"
Roll back
| description |

Amplified, an experience design and technology innovation studio in Portland focused on imagining the communities of the future, is launching a new series called “Placemaking in the Digital Age” to galvanize a community around this emerging design discipline. In this series, we will discuss how we can build meaningful places where digital and physical experiences complement each other, examine design processes and methodologies, and examine the nature of design teams that create these experiences.
Join us on Thursday, August 23 as we kick off this series. Gregg Sloan, Founder and Chief Creative Officer and Janani Vasudev, Director of Experience Design at Amplified will introduce the series with a talk about what placemaking is, as well as discuss their work in the area. The 45-minute talk will be followed by a Q&A, with plenty of time in the beginning and at the end to network. Complimentary refreshments will be provided.
This event has a seating limit of 30 people. Please don’t forget to RSVP to save a spot! |

PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) September Happy Hour
Roll back

***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-september-happy-hour-tickets-49177317681] is required to gain entry to this event ***
Join us for Happy Hour at Schrodinger on September 18th.
We talk a lot about the importance of technical skills at every level of the technology industry, but our soft skills can be just as important, if not more! This month we are focusing on how we can nurture and leverage our soft-skills and natural strengths at work. To facilitate this discussion we’ve set the conversation starter to “how can you create space for folks transitioning into tech.”
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase three women in our community.
An employee of Schrodinger will provide an introduction to the company and share open job opportunities.
Shauna Levy, of Shauna Levy Strengths + Leadership LLC, will tell us how understanding our natural strengths (the things we do without thinking) can be applied to improve our performance and satisfaction at work.
Caroline Clyburn, licensed massage therapist, will talk about self-care, and how it relates to health, happiness, and performance!
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
Table Topics to help break the ice.
A section for job seekers and our sponsors who are hiring, to ensure people get connected.
Agenda:
4:30 p.m. - Doors open/Networking
5:30 p.m. - Introductions, Announcements + Lightning Speakers
6:30 p.m. - Event ends

It's like a continuous hackathon! Not only is it working, people love it.
Ron Quartel will tell you his life purpose is to "unleash the human spirit in the workplace." He loves all things software and nurturing--business/development harmony in particular. |

pdxFLIT August Meetup - Professional Development Workshop
Roll back
| description |
The end of August means that Fall is around the corner. Are you switching careers with the season? Are you looking to get into the tech industry for the first time? This month, pdxFLIT is taking a break from presentations and hosting a special workshop about professional development! We'll be partnering with our friends from Intel to provide a two-hour event featuring a variety of activities. There will be opportunities to turn strengths into interview stories, participate in resume reviews, practice elevator pitches, and practice answering tricky behavioral interview questions. If you're searching for a job, take a night off to practice these valuable skills!
More information about this event will be coming soon! If you have any questions, please contact Masen or Katie via Meetup, Twitter, email, or Slack.
Are you interested in speaking at a future pdxFLIT event? We're always looking for speakers - no experience is necessary! If you're interested in giving a talk, please contact Katie at [email protected].
We kindly ask that you abide by our Code of Conduct and Puppet's Code of Conduct when attending this event. They can be found at the following destinations:

Join JAMstack Portland as the Gatsby team takes over to share what’s coming in Gatsby V2.
On Thursday, August 23rd (6:30pm) at Alchemy Code Lab, take a deep dive into what’s coming up in Gatsby V2. Learn how Gatsby leverages React and GraphQL as part of its JAMstack approach to building blazing fast websites.
Talks for the night:
- **Gatsby V2 Deep Dive** with Kyle Mathews, creator of Gatsby
Learn what’s new in V2, including additional build optimizations, better error messaging, hotter hot reloading with Gatsby’s Ludicrous Mode, and PostCSS configuration updates.
- **How We’re Working to Make Open Source More Open** with Marisa Morby
From free swag to open pair programming hours, Gatsby is working hard to make sure the open source community is as welcoming as possible. Learn how we’ve designed our processes, what we’ve learned, and what we’re planning next in this session.
- **Build a Gatsby V2 Site with AWS and Tailwind CSS** with Kyle Galbraith
Learn how to leverage Gatsby, Tailwind, and AWS to create (and deploy) a stylish blog - in the time it takes for a pizza to get delivered.
- **Data in Gatsby V2: GraphQL Schema Stitching, StaticQuery, and More** with Andrew Rhyne
In this session, learn all about the new ways you can access data in Gatsby V2, from the flexibility of the new StaticQuery component to improved integration with existing GraphQL APIs.
Food and drinks will be provided. Space is limited so register early to reserve your spot! All attendees are expected to abide by [Gatsby’s code of conduct](https://next.gatsbyjs.org/docs/code-of-conduct/). |
