Oregon's entrepreneurial community is growing and thriving. In fact, Oregon entrepreneurs raised more than $200 million last year. Many of these companies have raised money in Oregon, but at some point, also made the decision to cast the funding net outside of the state.
Raising money for your company is never easy and looking out of state inevitably creates some new challenges such as; How do you go about getting connected to investors in other states? Do investors follow a different methodology when investing in companies outside of their state? Are most out of state investments done by VC firms or are there also angel investments?
Join us as we have a panel of experts discussing all aspects of out of state funding.
Event Panelists:
Chris DeVore, Founders Co-op (Seattle)
Chris Ulum, Agilyx
Scott Kveton, Urban Airship

Portland Python Sprint
Roll back
| description |

→ |
The Portland Python Users Group is hosting a sprint February 26 at the headquarters of Urban Airship. The space has room for at least 40 people, but be sure to sign up here!
The group plans to spend some time on Fabric's multiprocessing branch, even including a look into a Python 3 port. Eric Holscher, one of the organizers of the sprint, plans to focus on Django features for 1.4, including forms improvements.
Flatland and Alfajor will also get some love and might see some Python 3 work as well. Last, but certainly not least, co-organizer Dan Colish plans to hack on PyPy, from 2.7 compatibility to benchmarking and testing on the platform. Join any of them or bring your own projects -- it's a day of hacking, fun, food, and friends.
On top of all of the third-party projects, they may spend some time on core development topics such as Python 3 features, doc and code bug fixing, and writing new tests. For those interested in starting on core development, we wrote a guide just for you: Beginners Guide to Python Core Development.
If you're interested in joining their sprint, don't forget to sign up. If you have questions, contact Dan and Eric. |

This month's topic: TBD
----------
Speaker: TBD
----------
PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :)
Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up!
Many people also go for a drink and further discussion following the meeting, at a location determined ad hoc (lately, Trees restaurant in the same building).

This month's topic: Semantic Datastores - the *Other* NoSQL
The NoSQL movement has given developers many more data storage options, each with their own design considerations and trade-offs. One of the quieter options, semantic data stores (also called triple stores or quad stores), provide an interesting hybrid of key-value and graph database features, while offering a data model based on a W3C recommendation (RDF) and a standardized query language (SPARQL) that will feel familiar to anyone experienced with unfashionable SQL.
This talk will cover the basics of data modeling with RDF and how to use the open source Jena Semantic Web Framework to add a semantic datastore to a Java-based Web application.
----------
Speaker: Brian Panulla (@bpanulla)
Brian is an independent software consultant based in Portland, Oregon. His current projects include interactive data reporting tools the services for clients in the higher education, automotive sales, and legal sectors.

Part hackathon, part geek social, these biweekly meetings are a time for you to come join others for insight, inspiration or just insanity. Bring your toys for others to see, or come see what others have been painstakingly chipping away at in their spare time. Whether it's code or chips, hacking of all sorts is encouraged. But we also like to hear your crazy ideas, so please come join us and bring your willingness to share your brilliance. We'll be the kids with all the coolest stuff on the table. Hope to see you there. |

Come hang out, drink beer, and write code every Monday night.
The meetings are extremely informal, and everyone is welcome!
Maybe we'll be in the middle room, maybe in the back room, just keep walking until you see a table full of laptops. |

<b>Topic: Solving Common Microcontroller Problems Quickly with Anewin's New MicroBench MB-500 Test Tool</b>
<b>Speaker(s): Mike Hagen, Anewin</b>
When working with microcontrollers, certain types of problems arise frequently and are time-consuming to find. With these in mind, Anewin designed the MicroBench MB-500 especially for embedded and digital engineers. This presentation will review such problems, the frustrations experienced in trying to find and solve them with traditional test tools, and show how the MicroBench MB-500 solves them quickly and easily.
<b>Biography:</b>
Mike Hagen's distinguished engineering career has included a variety of technical and leadership roles with Tektronix: senior staff technologist and director of advanced development, engineering manager, design engineer, evaluation engineer, manufacturing engineer, and test technician.
In addition, Mike was an instrumental architect and leader of IEEE Standards development for VXI. He served as chair of committees that established the test and measurement industry's first modular, computer-automated instrument architecture standard.
Mike's hands-on design engineering experience includes digital and analog electronics, FPGA and microcontroller systems, CMOS integrated circuits, software, and firmware.
More recently, Mike co-founded Anewin, LLC (in Washington) with Colin Shepard.
Mike earned a Bachelor's of Science in Electrical Engineering from Portland State University, holds 9 patents, and has taught industry and community college courses in electronic technology. Mike's hobbies include astrophotography, amateur radio, metal work, and making music.

February PLUG Advanced Topics
BSD (Berkley Software Distribution): Enterprise Open Source From Day One
W&W: Tuesday, February 15th, 7PM at Free Geek, 1731 SE 10th Ave
Synopsis:
You use BSD software every day.
Virtually every packet you send travels through BSD-based routers.
BSD gave us the Internet, which gave us Linux and the FLOSS revolution.
The iPhone contains BSD software. OpenSSH is a BSD project.
Michael Dexter of BSD Fund will give a tour of how BSD is being used and discuss why it happily lurks in the shadows of open source. BSD myths will be addressed along with an open discussion of what the audience is doing with BSD.

Arbor Lodge Community Network Work Party
Roll back
| description |
The Personal Telco Project will be installing devices recovered from the failed MetroFi network on two houses adjacent to Arbor Lodge Park in North Portland. This is the first stage of a network that can grow, to extend coverage further afield. Come join other volunteers as we build a service for the community. Learn what is involved, so that we can build more of these networks! |

We will be installing two SkyPilot devices (salvaged from the failed MetroFi project) to begin construction of an Arbor Lodge Community Network. The work on Saturday will be partly mechanical, physically mounting things with wrenches and ladders. It'll be partly digital, configuring the hardware settings. You can help with your hands and your heads. Bring cameras to help document what we do. It's your network: pitch in, help and learn! |
