create Calagator::Event 1250459819 e-Textile and Wearable Electronics Workshop Roll back

description nil "If you’re interested in soft circuits and wearable electronics, I’ve got great news. ...I’ll be kicking off a new series of bi-weekly eTextile open worksessions at BrainSilo. This isn’t a structured class or workshop, more of a regular time to get together and talk eTextiles, work on projects, learn new skills, etc. I’ll be bringing at least one current project that I’m working on, as well as lots of resources, and I’ll have some basic kits available for sale for anyone just getting started."

create Calagator::Event 1250459817 Raising A Million Dollars In This Economy Roll back

description nil Join us for an evening of education and interaction around the critical topic of "Raising A Million Dollars In This Economy". We are not talking about the status quo of feedback on writing a business plan, networking with everyone you can get a meeting with and then pitching all of the standard funds in town, but rather about how the vast majority of Oregon and Washington start ups actually get funded. We will have a panel of four local start up founders including: - Brent Hieggelke (CEO of Second Porch) - Ken Westin (CEO of ActiveTrak Inc.) - Kevin DeWhitt (Founder of Agilyx) and - John Friess (CEO of journey gym) These founders have each raised between $600K and $9M for their Oregon start ups in the past couple of years. They have raised these funds through their founding team, angel investors, angel funds and VCs. The whole gamut is covered here, but more importantly their candid feedback on what worked well and consistently will surprise you. All of them agree the secret is often something out of your control unless you can create it. So, if you are looking to better learn about how these four local start ups raised their funding, how long it took, who provided it, what were the terms, what worked well, what their valuations were, where they found their angels, what due diligence cycles were like, etc., then this event is for you. This event is open to the public and as always this event is free and dinner will be provided. We will start the event at 6:00pm with food and networking and then the educational portion will begin at 6:30pm.

update Calagator::Event 1250459815 Content Strategy Meetup - Book Club Roll back

description Our next Content Strategy Meetup up will be our first Quarterly Book Club and we’re reading Content Rules by Ann Handley and C.C. Chapman. We’ll meet at 5:30 PM on Thursday, February 24th. This time we’ll meet at Katherine Gray’s office for a more sit-down setting. While we usually meet the third Thursday of the month, we’re going to push this meeting out to the fourth week to give people a little more time to finish the book. And, speaking of that, even if you don’t get to finish the book, come anyway! We’ll have a one-pager of the top points (from at least one person’s perspective) so you can join in. And if you’ve ever been in a book club you know that the conversations often wander into areas not specifically covered by the book, though we’ll do our best to stay on topic all the same. If you don’t yet have the book please consider buying it at Powell’s Bookstore. You may have heard that they, like most indie bookstores, are really feeling the cash pinch due to changes in the book industry and they laid off people yesterday. Powell’s even has the book available as an e-book through Google. Our next Content Strategy Meetup up will be our first Quarterly Book Club and we’re reading Content Rules by Ann Handley and C.C. See this post: http://caseorganic.com/blog/2010/12/the-fifth-portland-data-visualization-group-wednesday-january-26-2011-from-630–830pm-at-webtrends/ See you there! It’s time for another Portland Data Visualization Meetup! We’ll have three to four main presentations and networking time. Webtrends will again graciously host us on their top floor. The venue is on the 16th floor of the building right next to Men’s Wearhouse. Here’s a Google Maps streetview of the entrance of 851 SW 6th Ave # 1600, Portland, OR: http://goo.gl/maps/IDUY. For best results, please arrive before 6:30 Pm. There should be a guard to let you in the door, but if you don’t see anyone to let you in, call 765-314-1599 and someone will come downstairs to get you. We usually have some conversation and networking, so feel free to bring business cards and/or let people know if you’re hiring. We won’t have a food or drink sponsor for this meeting, so feel free to bring your own snacks and things to eat! (if you’d like to sponsor, see the section at the end of this post). ---Special Guest--- We’ll have a special guest and science journalist from Germany visiting. Please make her feel welcome as she’s come a long way visit! She’s very excited to meet all of you and see what’s going on with data visualization here. Speakers for Data Viz #5: 1. Nate Geier will demo a E-learning system he worked on. 2. Kevin Ward of NASA’s Earth Observatory will present a general overview of what he is working on there. 3. Kevin Lynagh will give a 10 minute talk on web-based visualizations and data-driven JavaScript applications. 4. Amber Case will present a short lecture on graph theory, with a process for visualizing Facebook groups. 5. That's a story in itself. But when you realize it's a Portland firm - Puppet Labs, and that the investment was lead by Kleiner Perkins Caulfield, you will want to hear the story straight from the horse's mouth - CEO Luke Kanies of Puppet Labs, the makers of a leading open source data center automation and configuration management framework. Joining him to talk about the opportunities and challenges of an open source start-up will be Stuart Cohen, CEO of CSI (Collaborative Software Initiative), a company that introduces a process for companies to collaboratively build software applications. Open Source has typically been associated with altruism - software that is given away free and is open to modification by users. The concept became a household word when Portlander Linus Torvalds developed the Linux operating system. Now the list of Open Source and Free Software today includes cutting edge solutions to large scale problems in multiple domains. From languages to runtimes, cloud infrastructure to databases, the best solutions are open-sourced. Leading companies are building on top of open-source components, while giving back to the community. But open source is not just about being cost-effective,it is becoming the key to innovation. How do open source start-ups thrive in this eco-system? Come and learn from the founders of two innovative start-ups!
