We’re meeting again this Friday at Ringlers on Burnside. This month, in preparation for a more in-depth discussion of metrics next month, we’ll discuss perhaps the most common metric (some would debate whether it’s a metric at all): velocity. To get an interesting perspective on the topic, you might want to read "Velocity is Killing Agility!" a blog post by Jim Highsmith (http://jimhighsmith.com/2011/11/02/velocity-is-killing-agility/).
Is he right or wrong? Do agile teams need metrics at all? What kinds of issues with or needs for metrics do you find where you work?

Why Do Airplanes Crash? Building an Open-Source Aircraft Sensor System
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Presented by Chris Andrew, Kayla Seliner, Mark Craig, and Trang Nguyen.
On October 7, 2008, the flight control system of Qantas flight 72 malfunctioned without warning. The failure caused the aircraft to violently pitch down with an acceleration of -0.8g, pitching passengers and crew into the roof of the cabin resulting in many injuries. In the investigation that followed, the malfunction was attributed to a software problem in the Air Data Inertial Reference Unit. These units are utilized on all modern passenger jets, but are proprietary devices not open to public scrutiny.
This capstone project develops an open source Air Data Inertial Reference Unit using four redundant Arduino boards each with a microcontroller, 3D gyroscope and accelerometer. Faults are injected into the system through software and outputs are monitored over serial ports allowing the user to test effectiveness of fault-tolerant algorithms to mask fail silent and byzantine faults in the sensors. Failures in ADIRU systems are usually complex in nature and arise under very anomalous circumstances suggesting that fault-tolerant system design could benefit from the diverse testing and evaluation that can occur in an open source community. This project demonstrates the low entry-cost to building a fault-tolerant system for open-source design and experimentation. |

Community Leadership Summit
Roll back
| description |

The Community Leadership Summit 2012 brings together community leaders, organizers and managers and the projects and organizations that are interested in growing and empowering a strong community.
The event pulls together the leading minds in community management, relations and online collaboration to discuss, debate and continue to refine the art of building an effective and capable community.
At the heart of Community Leadership Summit 2012 is an open unconference-style event in which everyone who attends is welcome to lead and contribute sessions on any topic that is relevant. These sessions are very much discussion sessions: the participants can interact directly, offer thoughts and experience, and share ideas and questions. These unconference sessions are also augmented with a series of presentations from leaders in the field, panel debates and networking opportunities. |

PLUG: The Ganeti Virtualization Management System
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Lance Albertson of the Oregon State University Open Source Lab will give an introduction to the Ganeti Virtualization Management System.
Ganeti is a robust cluster virtualization management software tool. Itâs built on top of existing virtualization technologies such as Xen and KVM and other Open Source software. Its integration with various technologies such as DRBD and LVM results in a cheaper High Availability infrastructure and linear scaling.
This hands-on tutorial will cover a basic overview of Ganeti, the step-by-step install & setup of a single-node and multi-node Ganeti cluster, operating the cluster, and some best practices of Ganeti. Finally, deploying and using a web-based management tool called Ganeti Web Manager.
Lance is the Associate Director of Operations for the Oregon State University Open Source Lab (OSL) and a Gentoo Linux Developer. He joined the Gentoo Linux project in 2003 and have been involved in managing their infrastructure and maintaining about a dozen or so packages in portage. Lance directs all of the hosting and development activities that the OSL provides for the open source community including projects such as Kernel.org, Drupal, Apache Software Foundation, and many many more. Lance has been at the OSL since 2007.

Inter-season edition.
Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!
TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on FreeNode. One commit a week is all we ask.

Pioneering Mobile Money in Afghanistan
Roll back
| description |

How do you build a struggling, war-torn economy if money can't change hands? Hear Shainoor Khoja, former director of corporate social responsibility at Roshan, Afghanistan's leading telecommunications firm, talk about how mobile technology moves money and other precious social commodities, like health, education and equal opportunity.
Most Afghans -- nearly 70 percent -- survive on less than $2 a day, so it's no surprise very few have bank accounts. But a substantial number -- about 17 million -- own cell phones. Harnessing Roshan’s technology edge and deep reach into the country’s most remote areas, Khoja and her team have worked to transform basic mobile phone knowledge into financial literacy.
Doors open at 6:30pm.
$10; $5 for students

No presenters tonight. Instead we'll be having open conversation as a group about Big Data topics. Also, we'll discuss the future of this Hadoop / Data Science group.
Agenda:
1) Open discussion about Big Data topics, news, events, etc. Bring your own list to add to the conversation.
2) Discussion about the future of the group. This is the third meeting and we've tried a variety of formats across interests. Where do we go from here? Or do we go anywhere from here?
Questions and suggestions are definitely welcome. Post on Google Groups Page:

Hardcore HTML

<p>Everyone knows HTML, right? Sort of. Rather than rehashing divs, spans, and img tags, we're going to dive deep into the semantics of html (much of this is HTML5, some is oft-ignored HTML4). <p>Whether you are a hardcore coder, a designer, or just a part-time web enthusiast, I guarantee you'll learn something new.</p>

<p>Did you know:</p>
<p>Modern browsers support a "required" attribute, stoping an empty field from being submitted without javascript?</p>

We meet every month at the Collective Agency in NW Portland (Old Town). No need to RSVP, all are welcome - our group ranges from the geo-curious to the überhackers. Beer at nearby pub to follow.
Two fun activities this month:
<p>
Cool map visualization with CartoDB (free account). CartoDB is an Open Source GIS Cloud Database featuring easy data loading and they have support for PostGIS raster, all abstracted through a Javascript API. This is an approachable hack session for the novice or advanced coder (we'll work in pairs or groups).
</p>
<p>
Wiki work! This is an opportunity to get familiar with the wiki and make improvements.

We meet the 4th Wednesday of every month at the Collective Agency in NW Portland (Old Town). No need to RSVP, all are welcome - our group ranges from the geo-curious to the überhackers. Beer at nearby pub to follow, probably Pints.
This month: <em>CartoDB Hack Session</em>
this month we don't have a talk lined up so we thought we would shake things up a little bit and do a little hack session as a group with one of the newer kids on the block, <a href="http://cartodb.com">CartoDB</a>. It's data management, map styling/publishing and an API for vector/raster spatial queries all rolled into one without needing to muck with server management. A researchers dream and built on open source goodness. What's that you say you're not a software developer? Perfect because you don't need to be to get started. We can roll up our sleeves and work together, ask lots of silly questions and learn lots of new things.
They offer a free account and tutorial to get started. Should be fun, see you tomorrow. |

Gaming for Social Good
Roll back
| description |

Hosted by Tech4Good and PixelArts
As the use of video games becomes more pervasive--think Angry Birds to Farmville to Wii Fitness--it becomes useful to consider their wider impact on our lives. Are they merely useful for entertainment, or can games help create change through creativity, imagination and play? Can games be valuable for mission-based groups like non-profits, NGOs, and community organizations? How can game design connect students to real-world problems?
Weâll kick off the evening with a panel discussion including speakers at the intersection of gaming and game development for education, non-profit enablement and youth outreach. Our panelists will explore how gaming and the creation of games can positively impact our local communities and wider world mission-based efforts. Following audience Q&A, everyone is welcome to continue the discussion over networking and soft drinks.
Join us to discuss how creating games and game development can benefit the social good!
What: Meetup and Panel Roundtable
When: Thursday, June 21st 6-9pm.
Where: Collective Agency,
Who: Game Developers, Creatives, Educators, Non-Profits, Programmers, Entrepreneurs, Businesses |

Roll back
| description |

What is this event? It's an informal meetup each month to work on our own individual Drupal projects in the company of other Drupalers. The idea is that you can work on your own project, ask a question to your neighbor if you're stuck, chat with others about your brilliant Drupal start-up idea, and then take a beer break whenever you want.
If you are bringing your laptop, don't forget to charge it ahead of time (since Lucky Lab's power outlets are minimal).
Here are the details:
Time: 5:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Lucky Lab Beer Hall 1945 NW Quimby St. Portland, OR 97209 (Yes, they have wifi.)
So get ready to pack up your laptop and see you soon! |
