VoIP: Not your grandmother's phone any more
Intel Jones Farm Conference Center (JFCC)

VoIP: Not your grandmother's phone any more

Speaker: Prof. Henning Schulzrinne When: Thursday, June 11, 2009 Time: 6:00 PM ~ 8:30 PM Cost: Free and open to the public (registration required). Register: here

Place: JFCC Auditorium, Intel Corporation- Jones Farm, 2111, NE 25th Ave Hillsboro OR 97124

Abstract Since its emergence in the mid-1990s, voice-over-IP products and services have mainly attempted to mimic the "black phone" of decades past, providing cheaper basic phone service. However, VoIP has the potential to significantly improve real-time communications if it is combined with presence, context-aware and location-based services. Peer-to-peer networks can allow building highly-scalable, self-configuring systems. This talk will give a broad overview of VoIP, including its IMS variant, and some of the advanced services that are now in development, standardization or starting to appear as products.

Bio Prof. Schulzrinne co-developed protocols such as RTP, RTSP and SIP, are now Internet standards, used by almost all Internet telephony and multimedia applications. His research interests include Internet multimedia systems, ubiquitous computing, mobile systems, quality of service, and performance evaluation.

Information Leakage from Encrypted Voice over IP: Attacks and Defenses
Portland State University FAB, Room 86-09

Abstract:

In this talk, I describe two side-channel traffic analysis attacks on encrypted voice-over-IP calls and a novel technique for efficiently defending against such attacks. We begin with a review of the basics of speech coding to understand how and why information can leak out of an encrypted VoIP call. We then discuss the techniques for recovering hidden information: first, how to identify the language spoken in the call, and then how to spot particular phrases. Our techniques are completely speaker-independent, and require no recorded examples of the target phrase. Nevertheless, we show that they achieve surprising accuracy on widely-used speech corpora. Finally, we consider methods for limiting this information leakage. Experimental results show that an intelligent, adaptive adversary can convincingly deceive such traffic analyses while incurring much lower overhead than previously expected.

VoIP, Kazoo and Erlang
HouseHappy.org

James Aimonetti of 2600hz.com will be joining us tonight to talk about how Erlang powers the Kazoo project and Voice-over-IP products all around the world.

Kazoo is a scalable, distributed, cloud-based telephony platform that allows you to build powerful telephony applications with a rich set of APIs.

Designed to handle anything from large carrier to small countries, the Kazoo infrastructure can do it all. There are no lock-ins and the software is open-source to give you complete freedom.

James will be giving us a high level view of the architecture behind Kazoo, both from a platform perspective and from an Erlang perspective. We'll survey some of the code that is of interest, such as the gen_listener behaviour (for AMQP message consumption), the PropEr tests in various modules, the wh_json module for working with Erlang-encoded JSON objects), and more. No telecom experience required!
