Making Noise with the Arduino – Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) As a part of the ongoing Arduino Cult Induction workshop series, this month we will be focusing on sound. In particular Don will be going over creating sound using the Arduino's built in Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) and Direct Digital Synthesis using resistive ladders. We will investigate using the Piezo element as both a simple speaker and an input trigger. We will review the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) from a hardware and software perspective, and look at a couple of useful integrated circuits (the lm324 and the lm368). The workshop will cost $25 and participants will recieve a complete midi interface board for the dorkboard/arduino and a piezo element which will be used to create a midi drum trigger. Participants will also take with them parts for an r2r ladder, an op amp and an audio amp capable of driving small speakers or headphones. Participants should leave the workshop with a better understanding of how micro-controllers such as the Arduino can be used to create and control sound, they should have built at least one working musical controller and they should have the foundations for several sound related projects. Please bring your dorkboard, rbba, or other arduino compatible board, a soldering iron or breadboard, and a laptop. The workshop will be held at PNCA (NW 12th and Johnson) in room 205 from 1-5pm on Sunday, November 30. To reserve a space you can paypal the workshop fee to [email protected] and you can feel free to email that address with any questions. The Arduino Cult Induction series of workshops are Sponsored by Tempus Dictum, Inc . in support of DorkbotPDX. (graphic by Jason Plumb ) |

Cascade ACM SIGGRAPH & Wacom Technology Corporation Present: Light Troupe Drawing in the Fourth Dimension – PCC Cascade Campus Come on out and join Cascade ACM SIGGRAPH & Wacom Technology Corporation as they present: Light Troupe, a local Portland movement, exploring the boundaries of entertainment and audio visual simultaneous interactivity while drawing in the 4th dimension. Intrigued? For the programmers in the audience, Luz Studio, OpenGL and Ruby will be discussed. For the visual and audio artists in the audience, there will be an opportunity to play while interacting with the code the developers write on the spot! Wacom Tablets, Wiimotes and MIDI devices will be used as a means of interface. That means you can expect to see 2D drawing in 3D space animated over time A demonstration with at least a 4-person, simultaneous drawing to be followed by live audience participation! This is super fun stuff; computer graphics, music, animation, spontaneous creativity, happy excited people - come see for yourself and participate! SIGGRAPH events are non-profit. It is free for SIGGRAPH members and $5 for non-members, and includes lots of tasty food! Please register at EventBrite so we know how much food to buy! |

Dorkbot Workshop -- Focused Workshop: Physical Computing With Midi – Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) FEE: $35 Please join us on the last Sunday of the month for one or more of these opportunities to learn. This may change somewhat given schedule conflicts withe PNCA which has graciously hosted these classes for the last 3 years. I will be at the open lab Sunday and would like to discuss what could be done to make the workshops and workshop schedule better serve the community. The PNCA workshops are at the Pacific Nortwest College of Art (1241 NW Johnson St.) from 1-5 in the afternoon, usually in room 205. |

MIDI: Musical Instrument Digital Interface, background and technical overview from ground zero – OHSU 8B-60 Lecture Bowl The Applied Research & Technology Series (ARTS) is pleased to announce the second of three presentations on MIDI. In December 2012 ARTS explored MIDI-based applications and concepts such as controlled drum synthesis, sequencing, and sampling. Tom Moxon, an experienced MIDI instrument design engineer, will explore MIDI protocol design and development history, technical operation, and MIDI master/slave relationships. Tom Moxon will share his personal design and development experience creating commercial MIDI instrument products. Participation: Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite electronic music tracks and discuss what makes them great. Questions and ideas should be directed to the meeting organizer. Light refreshments will be served. Free parking at OHSU on Saturdays. The venue is served by TriMet. Plan your trip at trimet.org. UHS8B60 is located one floor down from the main OHSU lobby. Sound system with 3.5mm stereo mixing inputs will be provided. Note: If you want to present video content, please contact the meeting organizer at least one week in advance of the presentation. Attendance is free and open to all ages. Preregistration is appreciated. Participation: Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite electronically synthesized music tracks and participate in shared listening experiences before and after the main speaker's presentation. Knowledge of how the tracks were created could be an interesting complement. Web/Youtube access should be available at the meeting. Questions, ideas can be directed to meeting organizer. Refreshments will be served. Free parking at OHSU on Saturdays. UHS8B60 is located in the University Hospital South building on the 8th floor. PDX IOS music meetup first meeting – Lucky Labrador Beer Hall Well, you have to start somewhere. . . We have no agenda to start with but I will have both my iPad, iPhone, Novation Launchkey 25, and some cans. I also have over 70 (I almost wish I had not counted them) IOS music apps, not that I'm an expert or even useful in most of them. Most notable in the missing category is Cubasis, just waiting for it to go on sale again. |
