Content Management Systems Myths: The Good, Bad and the Ugly
Portland State University

Internet Professionals SIG Cost: $10 for members $30 for non members

Content Management Systems (CMS) provide ever improving platforms for collective authoring of Website information. What are the opportunities, issues, and myths surrounding them?

No longer do authors need Web design skills, or have to wait for the Webmaster to post their information. Instead, they can use powerful and easy to use CMS to create, edit, post and remove content. CMS based websites may support a multi-national enterprise with mission critical applications, and huge libraries of documents. Or an entrepreneur can use a free CMS to set up an online ecommerce site, rich with online store, forums, blogs, glossaries or WIKIS. Universities use them for event calendars, on-line registration, class schedules, and faculty biographies.

But what are the issues? Does the "container" fit the contents? Does the software support the work flow? Will it rank well with search engines? Do the applications perform as needed? How do you plan and execute an enterprise level project?

Moderator Stanford M. Davis, Search Engine Optimization Consultant Portland

Speakers George Ross, Director of Technology, ISITE Design Scott Hendison, CEO, Search Commander, Inc

PDXTech4Good May Meetup
Lucky Labrador Brew Pub

At last, we have confirmed a May Meetup topic!
Constituent Relationship Management Systems or Databases!

A good system for managing your clients, constituents, donors, and/or volunteers will ease your troubles away! Well...we're not sure that any database can be completely pain-free, there are some good solutions available for nonprofits but before a tool is decided upon, some essential questions must be asked. Join us on May 25, when Tompkins Spann will talk unbiased on how to determine your nonprofits' needs for data management and what you need to evaluate when choosing a CRM or database.

Then, you will have the opportunity to talk to Tompkins and others (we invite you to attend if you have a CRM solution to talk up!) about specific solutions and how they might integrate into your nonprofit's work flow.

We are proud to be bringing you this meetup in collaboration with the Portland Nonprofit Salesforce Users Group and Convio.

..............................................................................................................................

Tompkins is the Sr. Market Strategist for Convio focused exclusively on the Common Ground product, Convio’s CRM solution for nonprofits. He has worked for Convio (and formerly) GetActive for more than 5 years in various roles, from account services to product marketing. His experience working with nonprofits began when he exited the Peace Corps in 2000 to create his own 501c3. He then began working for a large advocacy-based organization in DC serving as the lead on all technology projects ranging from website strategy to database development. Tompkins has a passion for nonprofit-tech and truly enjoys helping organizations pick the right solutions and apply the right strategies to help further their mission.

Drupal User Group monthly meet-up
OpenSourcery

Here's what we've got on the agenda:

  1. "A Case Study in Drupal 7: Care Network by Elite Care" presented by Manuel Mejia

Want to leverage the power of Drupal to address your own specific niche industry or market? Learn how this can be accomplished by examining a real-world case study of the "Care Network"—a Drupal distribution that assists staff and family members in creating "Communities of Care" for elderly and disabled people. Built on Drupal 7, the Care Network helps provision services, monitor community residents, and facilitate social interaction.

In particular, Manuel will discuss unique features of the project including real-time location tracking of all individuals on campus, programable alerts using a wide array of sensors, web enabled recording of daily notes and services, and touch screen monitors used to input and display this information. He'll also touch upon the strengths of Drupal as an application platform and how anyone can extend Drupal 7 core and contributed modules to fit their unique project requirements and needs.

  1. "Building a Social Network in Drupal" presented by Ben Kaplan

Have you ever wanted to build your own social network? Or maybe add some cool social networking features to your existing website? In this presentation, Ben will demo some of the latest features of the User Relationships (http://drupal.org/project/user_relationships) and Private Message (http://drupal.org/project/privatemsg) modules—two modules he's worked on that allow you to replicate many features of popular social networks.

And what if you also want to leverage the power of other third-party social networks like Facebook, Twitter, or MySpace? Ben will demo the newest features of the Janrain Engage (http://drupal.org/project/rpx) module, including the ability to authenticate with other social networks, map user data from these networks, share content simultaneously across networks, and integrate with popular Drupal modules like Rules and Views.

Finally, here are the meeting details:

Date: Wednesday, April 13

Time: 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. (after the meeting, we head to Lucky Lab for drinks and conversation!)

Location: OpenSourcery offices (1636 NW Lovejoy St. Portland, OR 97209)

It promises to be really interesting and useful meeting... you don't want to miss it!

See you there,

Apple's iOS devices have become a revolution. Whether you use a Windows, Unix or Apple server platform, these devices are becoming the industry standard for such jobs as POS and CRM. They have even managed to overtake the long standing leadership position from Blackberry devices. Apple's MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and iMac product lines are also gaining traction among business professionals. You see the easily recognized Apple logo consistently in TV shows and movies.

I will discuss the role of Apple products in the modern business landscape focusing on how they and their uses of the iCloud technology have 'changed the game' concerning daily computing. I will provide a series of examples of how iOS mobile devices are currently being used in the small business sector and how big business is beginning to get on board and why. Then I will outline the challenges facing IT support professionals concerning this rapid adoption of relatively new technology into long standing corporate environments and systems. These challenges include integration, security, deployment, app development/distribution and keeping up with Apple's constant flow of new products and software updates.

Presented by James "Jamie" Pollock has more than 15 years of experience developing and implementing communication strategies, corporate training curriculums and Internet-based solutions for companies such as Jantzen, Symantec and Intel. As an independent consultant, he has assisted many small businesses in creating business plans and organizational development strategies through web development projects and direct coaching. He is currently an instructor for the MacPac Academy leading weekly classes in all things Apple and will have his Mobility Technology Competency (MTC) certification from Apple by the end of September.

He possesses a Bachelors of Science in Computer Information Systems from Roanoke College in Salem, VA and a Masters of Business Administration with a concentration in Organizational Behavior from Marylhurst University in Lake Oswego, OR.

Jamie's certifications include: Apple Consultants Network Apple Certified Support Professional, 10.7 Lion Microsoft Office Specialist in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook 2010

Each of these questions will be presented from both the perspective of you as a business owner, and also as a consultant helping your clients make decisions.

What is CRM?
Why from a business perspective is CRM important?
How can it benefit my business?
What will it cost me?
What's the payback?
How can a small business have an effective CRM program that works?

Agenda: 6:00--6:20 Networking 6:20--7:00 No-host dinner 7:00--7:30 Introductions and announcements 7:30--8:30 Main Presentation (followed by Q&A):

Presented by: Rusty Lee lives in the Battle Ground area and has been supporting the IT needs of Small Business for the last 10 years as CEO for CallMyPcDr.com . He has presented to audiences large and small on a wide range of topics. In a previous life he was Director of Marketing for a manufacturing firm in Portland, responsible for sales and marketing worldwide.

During his over 20 years of Sales and Marketing experience he learned the old fashioned way about the importance of customer data. Back then it was called database marketing. He's kept in touch with his Marketing Roots and now can add the Technology Perspective to the equation of CRM.
