Get your resume seen! Talks to help your tech job search
Trimble, 5665 Meadows Rd #400, Lake Oswego, OR 97035

This event is hybrid; a Zoom link will be emailed to registered attendees closer to the date, but please note that the talk itself doesn't start until 6:30!

February is right in the middle of peak hiring season, and PNSQC has a couple of speakers lined up to help you land that next role in a very competitive market.

First, Jeremy Elwood will give his talk titled The Paradox of Plenty: A Modern Hiring Story. It's a reflection on finding a job, but told from the employer's perspective: exploring what actually differentiated successful candidates from the rest, why resume screening failed to surface the strongest candidates, and what to look for in a successful candidate. Along the way, it offers concrete advice for everyone: how job seekers can better present their experience, approach take-home challenges, and prepare for interviews; and how hiring managers can ask better questions, design meaningful evaluations, and reduce unnecessary pain in the process. Ultimately, the talk aims not only to surface systemic problems in modern software engineer hiring, but also to offer practical guidance and cautious optimism for navigating (and surviving) the "paradox of plenty".

Heather Wilcox is excited to follow with her talk titled Resume Tips and Tricks, which will go further in depth on how to write a resume that hiring managers will notice, along with other helpful hints for survival in the era of AI. As an experienced hiring manager and job seeker herself, Heather has reviewed hundreds (maybe thousands?) of resumes. She can tell you that the AI and recruiter generated resumes are usually easy to spot and often treated with a certain amount of disdain and distrust. But, at the same time, you need your information to get past the AI screeners and into the hands of a real human. It's not an easy needle to thread, but she's done it and so can you!

Schedule (all times in PT): 6-6:30 PM: Light refreshments (soft drinks, pizza) and networking 6:30-7:30 PM: Talks/Presentation 7:30-8 PM: Q&A and more networking

Thanks to Trimble this month for lending us their space for the evening!

Happy New Year geo-nerds!

PDXOSGeo connects again this week, Wednesday Jan 28, 6:30p Hot Lips Pizza @ the Natural Capital Center 721 NW 9th Ave, Portland OR. Join us for some show and tell and good open geo discussion!

Topic for January: David Percy “Percy” has been doing research on applying Reconstructability Analysis (RA) to categorical raster datasets since 2012, and is preparing to defend his dissertation on Spatial Reconstructability Analysis soon. RA is a form of machine learning that works exclusively with discrete data, so categorical data such as the National Land Cover Database is a perfect source of data for it. These NLCD data have been analyzed in attempts to predict forest dynamics (clearcuts), and wildfire size, specifically looking at how historical vegetation affects these outcomes. Results will be presented that show how these data are useful in modeling future events. All of the extraction for analysis was done in Python using open source GIS libraries Shapely and Rasterio. Code will be shared and discussed.

Agenda: 5:00pm to 5:30pm – Pizza and Networking! Food sponsored by Mezmo

5:45pm - Streamlining Telemetry Data: Building a Telemetry Pipeline to Handle High-Cardinality Metrics by Chelsea Wright @ Mezmo

Handling high-cardinality telemetry data efficiently is crucial for modern observability systems. In this session, we will explore strategies for designing a scalable telemetry pipeline that can process large volumes of diverse metrics without performance bottlenecks. We’ll cover best practices for data ingestion, storage optimization, and query performance, along with real-world techniques to mitigate challenges like high dimensionality and resource constraints. Attendees will gain insights into building a robust telemetry pipeline that balances accuracy, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.

6:15pm - What Producing Sound Effects Taught Me About Distributed Systems by Bret Bernhoft

As a sound designer and cloud native developer, I have discovered the art of crafting immersive audio effects mirrors the science of engineering distributed systems. In this talk, I will share how core audio production concepts like managing feedback loops, dealing with signal degradation and understanding the effects of reverb offer direct parallels to tackling challenges in microservices, observability and network latency. Just as a single, complex sound effect is built from many interdependent layers, modern applications rely on an orchestration of services and timing, demanding both precision and systems thinking.

We will explore how considering signal-to-noise ratio can clarify your logging strategies and how the art of mixing audio tracks provides valuable insights into resource limits as well as task prioritization within your deployments. By drawing on these analogies, this session aims to equip you with a new perspective that makes the complexities of cloud native architectures a bit more understandable, all through the lens of sound.

6:45pm to 8:00pm – Networking and Board games!

5:00pm to 5:30pm – Pizza and Networking!

5:45pm - Playing Super Mario made me a better Platform Engineer - Ramiro Berrelleza @ Okteto

I grew up playing videogames. I still remember that morning where Super Mario, the og platformer, was waiting under the Christmas tree and I had to beat my brother to it. And now, I’m a grown up that talks all day about Platform Engineering. Coincidence? I think not!

In this talk, we’ll explore how Platformer games and Platform Engineering have a lot more in common than we think. Let’s breakdown some of Super Mario’s decades old best practices and see how we can use them to build better platforms that helps us beat our big bad boss: developer friction and cognitive load.

6:15pm - Using Simulation to Understand Kubernetes - David Morrison @ Applied Computing Research Labs

Do you ever wish you could understand what's going on in your Kubernetes cluster? Do you wish that you could safely make changes to your cluster without "experimenting in prod"? Have you ever tried to reason about cost savings or capacity planning and gotten stuck?

SimKube is an open-source tool to help you answer these questions. It is a record-and-replay simulation environment that lets you collect data about your production environment(s) and then replay them locally on your laptop to debug, experiment, and make predictions about your infrastructure. In this talk you'll learn why simulation is an important tool for understanding your infrastructure, and how you can start using SimKube in your own environments.

6:45pm to 8:00pm – Networking and Board games!

Techies' GameCon at NedSpace (board and video games)
NedSpace Broadway

Come join us to network with fellow techies, and experience a vast array of games, ranging from party games to middleweight and heavyweight games! We will have over 30 board games available. NedSpace is a large space, featuring 10 private gaming rooms and 3 large common areas each equipped with 1 to 3 tables, accommodating 4 to 8 players per table.

The NedSpace and GameCon communities are very welcoming and a great place to make friends, for new and experienced gamers alike. We can help you find a group to play with when you arrive or let you explore! With the event running for 5+ hours - from 2 PM to 7 PM (or a little later!), you'll have time to break out some more crunchy games if you desire. It's also great for playing lots of shorter party games and everything in between.

BEFORE THE EVENT Join NedSpace's active Discord, where you can chat about the next game night and learn more about NedSpace. You can also schedule games or arrange carpools on the game night channel. On Discord, please make your username your name or nickname, so other members know who you are - it really helps for finding people at the event!

You may want to bring:

  • board games
  • snacks to share
  • weather protection (jacket, umbrella)
  • water bottle, reusable plate, fork (or use our provided dishes)

NAVIGATING GAME NIGHT Please make a name tag when you arrive, and feel free to grab food & drinks in NedSpace's kitchen. Folks tend to socialize for the first 30 minutes, and new games start every 20-30 minutes.

If you have any questions during the event (including needing help finding a game to play/join), you can ask in the game night channel on Discord or ask one of our hosts (Lana or Sean and possibly Faris, Jarod or Ripley)

FOOD INFO We provide some snacks, drinks, and other food. We encourage you to bring your favorite foods to share as well. If you bring enough for 10-15 people, that's awesome!
