PDXWIT Presents: Experienced Women in Tech

    Planet Argon

Registration through Eventbrite https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdxwit-presents-experienced-women-in-tech-tickets-73707568321 is required to gain entry to this event.

Are you a woman with 15 or more years of experience working in technology? Do you want to spend time with other women in tech who understand your point of view as someone who has been in this industry for a while? PDXWIT’s Experienced Women in Tech events work to foster a community for women like you. Ageism is alive and well in business in general, and perhaps even more so in tech. With many colleagues younger than you—including your boss—you may feel marginalized, unseen, or feel your skills are not as valued as they should be.

Join us on November 12th at Planet Argon for an evening dedicated to bringing experienced women in tech together to talk through these challenges. Our focus is on sharing ways we find success in our companies despite potential ageism, and on showing the value we bring through our experience. The evening will involve some initial discussion, breaking out into small groups to brainstorm ideas, then coming back together as a group to share ideas and conclude our discussion. Susy Dunn and Lois Brooks, both highly respected women from tech HR, will share lessons they have learned and seen as they participate as guest facilitators for the evening.

    Agenda: 5:30 p.m. - Doors Open & networking 6:00 p.m. - Introductions 6:10 p.m. - Group event followed by sharing of take-away points 7:15 p.m. - Wrap-up and networking 7:30 p.m. - Event ends

Event FAQ Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms? A: We share bathrooms with other businesses on our floor, so we unfortunately cannot change the restrooms to gender-neutral.

Q: Is the space ADA accessible? A: Yes.

Q: Will there be food and drink at this event? A: Yes, and vegan and gluten-free options will be available.

Q: What is the parking situation? A: No, but street parking is ample in the surrounding area.

Q: Is there any special information that might help me find the entrance? A: You can enter the building through the glass door to the left of Bread & Honey Cafe on Vancouver. Then take the elevator to the 3rd floor, and find our office on the left. The first-floor glass door will lock at 6:30

Q: Is there secured bike parking? A: No, but bike parking is available outside the building.

Q: Should I consider using public transportation? A: Yes.

Q: Can I bring my dog? A: No, we ask that you leave your furry friend home. There may be an office pet here, but likely not after hours. Our office is dog-friendly during the day.

Purpose: PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.

Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome.

    Planet Argon

If you are interested in getting a Ruby Certification or just mentoring others, come on out!!!

This event will focus on preparing attendees to take the Silver certification exam. This is a basic skill-level certification of knowledge on the background, grammar, classes, objects, and standard libraries of Ruby.

We are going to use a version of "EduScrum" to work through the subject issues each person needs to know for the exam. After an introduction, we will break out into groups and create a study plan to get each member of the the group up.

    There will be pizza!

The Ruby Association Certified Ruby Programmer examinations are intended for engineers who design, develop, and/or operate Ruby-based systems, consultants who make Ruby-based system proposals, and instructors who teach Ruby. Those who are certified are recognized for their skills as Ruby engineers and as having high levels of Ruby-based system development capabilities. Those who pass the examination are certified by the Ruby Association as a Ruby Association Certified Ruby Programmer.
