First, there were HotJobs and Monster. Then, LinkedIn disrupted the job search market. But since then, innovative solutions for job seekers and people looking to hire have been few and far between. Now, a new generation of products are looking to pick up where LinkedIn left off, enabling both those searching and those hiring to find better connections in the job market.

At this special Science on Tap, Theodore Gray, author, and co-founder of Wolfram Research, Inc.., will tell fascinating stories, show stunning photography, and have live on-stage demonstrations in this exploration of some of the most interesting, essential, useful, and beautiful chemical structures that make up every material in the world.

Molecules is the long-awaited sequel to Theodore Gray’s bestselling book The Elements: A Visual Exploration of Every Known Atom in the Universe. Theodore is also the author of Gray Matter, a long-running Popular Science column, where he chronicled lots experiments, including several where he set himself and other things on fire.

Over the last few years, we’ve had the chance to host many events that expose founders to an alternative universe where companies they’ve been told can’t be built without massive amounts of VC funding are thriving with little, to no, outside investment. We often start these events by warning attendees that they won’t be able to unsee what they’re about to see. Many leave these events with a whole new perspective on not only what is possible, but why limiting exposure the traditional venture business model is beneficial for founders, employees and the cultures and values they’re hoping to embody with their businesses.

Rather than write another blog post or clever FAQ, we wanted to bring that same in-person experience to those considering investment from Indie.vc.

Over the next 2 months, we’ll be embarking on a tour of most major metros in the US (we tried picking towns that were a short-ish road trip away from just about anywhere). Our goal with these info sessions is to share our experiences and motives directly with the Indie-curious. They are open to founders interested in taking investment from Indie.vc and Angels/Funds interested in funding companies the way we do. We’re planning to have some founders we’ve backed, and founders who’ve built and scaled profitable businesses, join us for these events to answer questions and share their experiences embracing the values and tactics we preach.

Jason has done a number of successful startups and has a number of failures. He's built lifestyle startups from scratch that pay his bills, ran a blog that let him drive a different new car every week, had projects fall flat on their face, and worked in venture-funded companies like UrbanAirship.

May's event will showcase Brad Heller, Co-Founder of Revisu, a PDX-based startup and PIE graduate. With Revisu, creatives can engage anyone at any point in the creative process to share their work and collect feedback so there are no surprises when a deadline arrives.

Brad will chat about the ups and downs, what he learned, and why he ultimately decided to close the doors on Revisu. He hopes that he can help fellow entrepreneurs avoid some pitfalls he experienced.

Join Portland's tech community in celebrating the end of another year. This is a fun, free annual event where members of local user groups and their families are invited to mingle, eat and play games. This is the fifth time the event's been held and it's lots of fun every time.

We'll have a potluck, so you're welcome to bring something yummy to share with others.
