Silverlight Hackathon
Roll back
description |

Silverlight Hackathon - Sunday Jan 31st 1pm-5:55pm
Event Sponsors: *IT Motives, Get It Right, Souk*
We've got a great place to hang out, and the Silverlight Hackathon is a go! Meet us downtown at Souk, and we're going to have a great day of working on Silverlight. We've had some great project suggestions, and we'll break down into groups and work on projects that we find fun. Are you new to Silverlight? This is a great chance to get started. We've already had several people offer to help beginners out.
Where?
Souk downtown (http://local.google.com/local?f=q&hl=en&q=322+NW+6th+Avenue,+Portland,+OR&ie=UTF8&om=1&hq=&hnear=322+NW+6th+Ave,+Portland,+Multnomah,+Oregon+97209&ll=45.525532,-122.676194&spn=0.010809,0.028818&z=16&iwloc=A ). It's super close to all kinds of Bus/Max stops, and there's a easy Smart Park close. Since it's Sunday, I expect there will even be street parking options.
Souk's direction page: http://www.soukllc.com/directions.html
Public Transportation
souk is located on the Max Green Line/Yellow Line (China Town Stop) and the bus route. The nearby streetcar also accesses souk a few blocks away. Consult www.trimet.org for more information.
By Bike
Bike lockers are within a couple blocks, and U bike racks are available on souk's block.
By Car
Zipcar's closest spot is at Flanders and 4th.
The closest garage is on Everett at 5 th one block away. Smartpark has garages within a few blocks at Naito and NW Davis and at Station Place (at the westside foot of the Broadway Bridge). Additionally, there are several outdoor lots within a few blocks of souk.
What do I need?
A laptop capable of running Dev Studio/Silverlight: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/dd823311.aspx
What can I do to help?
Burn some CD/DVDs. We need SL3 Tools + Blend/Dev Express, SL 4 Tools and Blend/Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2.
Bring a (labelled) extension cord/power strip
Bring a projector (please let us know if you can do this)

Create online presence and support for technical products using video for web as a primary vehicle. This webinar will present ideas for creating, promoting and optimizing online videos for training, sales, and technical support of products. Video for the web fits especially well with products that require set up, calibration and regular maintenance such as laboratory instruments, equipment, and industrial products with technical applications.
Vinnie Martorano with Sheldon MFG. will be presenting a case study on Sheldon's latest product launch the 3552 CO2 Incubator. Challenged with supporting and educating a worldwide dealer network, Sheldon MFG began using video to train and promote their line of laboratory incubators, ovens, and chambers. Using video Sheldon was able to launch the 3552 into the global marketplace quickly and clearly. Mr. Martorano will elaborate on the chosen content, format and results seen thus far in this latest product release. |

Galois Tech Talk: A Scalable I/O Manager for GHC
Roll back
description |
A Scalable I/O Manager for GHC
Presented by Johan Tibell.
Abstract: The Glasgow Haskell Compiler supports extraordinarily cheap threads. These are implemented using a two-level model, with threads scheduled across a set of OS-level threads. Since the lightweight threads canât afford to block when performing I/O operations, when a Haskell program starts, it runs an I/O manager thread whose job is to notify other threads when they can safely perform I/O.
The I/O manager manages its file descriptors using the select system call. While select performs well for a small number of file descriptors, it doesnât scale to a large number of concurrent clients, making GHC less attractive for use in large-scale server development.
This talk will describe a new, more scalable I/O manager thatâs currently under development and that hopefully will replace the current I/O manager in a future release of GHC.

Sledgehammer: When does a startup need to call a lawyer?
And when can a startup get by without one? The members of PIE invite you to join them for a great session on understanding better when and when you don't need a lawyer.
We have invited one of the tech startup industry's best law firms to come and talk to the entreprenuers in Portland's startup scene. Neil Nathanson from the Portland office of the leading startup law firm Perkins Coie, will talk about the critical points in a startup's lifecycle where having your own legal sledgehammer is essential. Also joining him will be Jeff Bock, addressing licensing and intellectual property issues and Neil addressing corporate and finance issues. He will also cover what sort of services and counsel you can expect from a law firm and then be open for a Q&A session.
The event will start at 6pm, but the doors will open around 5:30 with pizza available.
There is no fee to attend - but please only register if you intend to come so we can have enough food.

Join us for the next meeting of PDXScala, the Portland Scala users group. We'll be discussing various testing frameworks as used under Scala and breaking out into groups to evaluate them and share notes. |

We've got a fun meeting coming up this Thursday. The plan is to break into small groups to evaluate various testing frameworks (Sepcs, ScalaTest, JUnit, etc.) and then discuss our findings as a group.
Trenton has graciously set up a GitHub repository with some basic classes to test against and a set of JUnit tests to get started with. It's currently set up with Maven and has the beginnings of an SBT project set up. I'm still working on getting SBT to run the JUnit tests Trenton wrote, but otherwise feel free to clone it and get familiar with it before the meeting:
http://github.com/trenton/TestOfTests
There should also be time to discuss other concerns, ask questions, and the usual sorts of things you might want to do in a group of like-minded techies. If you have ideas for other short discussions you'd like to propose for this meeting or a future meeting, please send them along. |

Mobile Portland: Augmented Reality
Roll back
description |

Imagine being able to use your phone to see what that IKEA couch you've been considering will look like in your living room.
A far-fetched science fiction scenario? No, IKEA has already released an application like that in Europe.
Augmented reality is an exciting and emerging technology. Augmented reality take real life information--typically the video display of a phone--and overlays it with computer information. Augmented reality is something that is completely unique to mobile.
This month at Mobile Portland, we're lucky to have two speakers who are early innovators in augmented reality. P. Mark Anderson is platform architect for Spot Metrix which provides an augmented reality library for iPhone called 3DAR. Tim Sears created Robotvision, one of the first augmented reality applications for iPhone.
Mark and Tim will share how people are using augmented reality, their experiences using augmented reality, and what the future holds for this new technology.
About the Speakers
P. Mark Anderson
P. Mark Anderson has 13 years experience developing interactive applications. After receiving a degree in Computer Science from University of Colorado in 1999 he started his career as a developer for Sun Microsystems.
In addition to creating several iPhone applications, Mr. Anderson moderates the Helpful iPhone Utilities open source project, as well as My Maps, an augmented reality iPhone app built on top of Google's personalized mapping system.
Mr. Anderson is platform architect for the 3DAR augmented reality SDK. He enjoys working with both artists and developers, and occupies his spare time with watercolor painting, mountain biking, disc golf and mentoring.
Tim Sears
Tim Sears is a software engineer who works for PR firm Waggener Edstrom by day building web applications, by night creating location-based augmented reality experiences for the iPhone. He created Robotvision, a popular augmented reality browser, for the iPhone in 2009 and currently works with clients to build out mobile geolocation experiences in augmented reality.
His work in augmented reality and social media analytics has been featured in major publications such as ReadWriteWeb, TechCrunch and CNET, and has won several awards, including the International Business Awards Best New Product/Service of 2009 for twendz, a real-time Twitter sentiment analysis application. |
